Good product, if you don't live in or near the city
by The Rupp on April 6, 2005
Pros: Compact; backlit; fits in seamlessly with the iPod mini; matches iPod; good transmission quality.
Cons: Small = easy to lose to some of us; will only tune as low as 88.1; difficult to find an open frequency.

Most of the time I'd try to steer clear of an FM transmitter, but there really aren't a whole lot of other options out there without an aftermarket car stereo. The AirPlay was a pretty nice piece of equipment, if you can find an open frequency and you don't have a tremendously powerful radio antenna (I drive a Lexus and live in Chicago... bad combination of a powerful antenna and no open radio frequencies.) Most radios will tune as low as 87.5 or so, but unfortunately (in my case, anyway), this unit only goes to 88.1. It does fit the iPod mini seamlessly; the curved edge and thickness match up without a glitch, and still allow the “Hold” switch to be accessed and used. The AirPlay does cut down the battery life, so I wouldn’t recommend it for a long road trip unless you brought along a charger. Although small, the LCD is backlit blue (which doesn’t match the iPod’s white backlighting, if you’re picky) and relatively easy to read.
The bottom line: try to find an open radio frequency before buying (search around the 88-89.X and 107.X range, there usually aren’t a whole lot of radio stations occupying those frequencies). If you can find one, go for it.2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

If you like your music clear and sharp, look elsewhere.

Summary: I live and drive in the country, and there are lots of vacant bandwidths and little interference, so using this device is not a problem. Even so, sound is really low-fidelity and the signal is not strong. Sadly, just after buying it I had a business trip and didn't get to try it out til the shop's return date had expired, or it would have gone back - so I'm forty bucks out of pocket. Haven't tried the Griffin iTrip, but I would suggest getting a cassette adaptor instead - it's about 2/3 the price, and direct sound rather than transmission has to be the way to go.

Best FM transmitter but still just OK

Summary: I like this one better than the iTrip because it of its ease to change station as you drift from area to area. While currently the best FM tuner I have seen, it is still just OK.
If you live in a major metro area with lots of stations it is hard to find a clear unused freqency. It gets better as you travel away from the city but you can still expect static sound. I was lucky and my car has CD player and a TAPE DECK. So I went out and for $10 bought one of those cassette converters with a mini jack on it. Sound was 100% better than any FM tunner. Not very stylish with a wire hanging out of your console but sound is what counts.
Your other options is to buy a IPOD hardwire adapter (made only for certian high end cars), create your own input jack it your stereo can handle it, or buy a new stereo deck that is IPOD friendly (Pricey $400-1000). For now I am sticking to the $10 tape converter as I am certain new product will surely come on the market shortly. -
Love it! Best of 3 transmitters I have tried.

Summary: I have tried other transmitters and this one works best for me. You just plug it in, tune your radio to a staticky station and tune this thing to same station, and your iPod plays over your radio. I use this for my hour and a half commute every day. Works great!

Nice Idea, Horrible reality

Summary: If you are not living in a real city, it would probably be the item for you. I tried this unit in Manhattan NYC, Hoboken NJ, Philadelphia PA. First of all, it is near impossible to find a clear free station in these areas. When you finally find one, the sound quality is poor and it gets staticy if the song should get loud. The unit appears to be underpowered because I have to practically shove my iPod in my dash to get it to work somewhat decently. At home, I have to put the iPod so close, I might as well just hook up my computer.
Save your $$, get the direct wire hook up to your car stereo if your stereo is compatible, or use the tape converter if you have a tape player. I unfortunately do not have either. It looks like I'll be upgrading my stereo some time soon or burning some CDs.
