Summary: I have played Super Mario 3 back in the days of the Super NES and I still own it - but it just sits on my desk collecting dust.
I just bought the Gameboy Advanced version, plugged it into my Nintendo DS and wow, this is without a doubt the best Gameboy Advanced game - hands down winner!
The graphics are sharper, the music is amazing - it looks identical, yet the animations are such better.
My favorite improvement is the game save!
It saves at important intervals and retains the number of lives you have collected!!!
This feature alone makes it better than Super Mario 64 DS.
The only real gripe I have is that the controls are different than with the original SNES version. No longer do the 'X/Y' buttons work! To grab an object or use running speed, you now must press the 'R' button or the 'B' button (which is below the 'A' button) - which can make my fingers tired real quick.
I lost countless lives, but will give the learning curve with the controls a chance because the GRAPHICS are simply the best for ANY game ever to be made for the Gameboy Advance.
When you beat a level, the changes are very obvious and a much welcome change!!
The programmers knew that we, the Mario fans are tired of the same old, so they tweaked it up with really good music and it does make a difference!
Mario's repetitive voice gets annoying after a while. Okay, so when I loose a life, I have to hear him tell me?
In a way, it's funny - very humorous actually. I like it and recommend this game.
With eye candy graphics, rich stereo sound (with that Super Mario beat) oh man! You know you want it!
Once I get used to the controls, I will likely find it even better.
Oh and in certain areas, you may find coins in areas that didn't exist in the previous versions.
Updated
The first time I played this new version of an old classic, I found the controls to be very difficult because the X/Y buttons (work on the Super Nintendo version of this game) do not work with the Nintendo DS.
Having played it completely through, the 2nd time was easier and the 3rd time felt like I was back, yet I still have plenty of practice more to achieve the level I was once at when I was younger.
This game is so much like the original, that I actually plugged in my Super Nintendo and played it (I cheated with the warp whistle) to find out if the skills I have astertained from this would work...
...and it does!
I was breezing through the Super Nintendo version like I've been playing all along!
While the graphics are technically the same, it looks sharper on the smaller screen because the pixels are not as blocky.
All I say to consumers is to give this game a chance and you won't be disappointed.
A new feature added is the ability to record your 2 favorite levels and play them back whenever you wish.
Another nifty feature is when you win the entire game, you can play any world, any level, as much as you want!
This is helpful since practice makes perfect.
Hone in your skills in the more challenging areas. Play and replay the same levels over and over.
