Pros: Large, easy-to-read 4" Touch-Screen interface with Trail and NUVI modes. Automatic landscape-Portrait Switching. 4-megapixel Autofocus Geotagging Camera. Rugged Screen (Hence the heft). Waterproof (But make sure those Flaps are closed properly).
Cons: A usual mix of software bugs, but typical for a GPS device as sophisticated as this. Lacking a 'Marine' Version with preloaded marine maps. (Can be purchased and uploaded separately). Hefty due to ruggedized Screen Glass. Pricy.

Summary: When it was introduced the Garmin Montana was not necessarily welcomed by Outdoor GPS purists who may have felt that most useful outdoor gadgets MUST fit in a pocket easily and not add much tax to the weight of a small backpack. However in retrospect I feel Garmin knew exactly what they were doing when Introducing a device that offers the sheer versatility of the Montana 650. The Montana 650/650t offers all of the functionality of a high-end NUVI, but then adds Geocaching and Geotagging capabilities with Topo Maps (650t) and a 4-megapixel autofocus Camera, relatively long Battery life and a MUCH more rugged Housing and Screen than you will find on any portable Auto GPS. The Montana is the world's first significant 'Crossover GPS' in that it seems equally at home on the mount of a Car, Boat, Jeep, ATV, Touring Bike, Dualsport Motorcycle and yes even on large PWCs or Kayaks too. Despite the Montana's detractors there is simply no substitute for the readability of a large touchscreen. And there is something just as attractive about being able to remove it from a vehicle and take it on a trail or even outright mountain climbing with some sense that it will survive better than any other large-screen GPS.
Yes it still has software bugs. But where are Garmin's competitors in the realm of the Montana? The Mighty brick rules the new Crossover GPS segment (that it created) and for now, rightly so.

Buy the auto mount and a City Navigator NT map and it'll give you spoken turn-by-turn driving directions. It's big. It's versatile. It's tough. It earned the name Montana - the ultimate in touchscreen toughness.
