Garmin Nuvi 3790T price range: $144.95 - $329.00

The good: The Garmin Nuvi 3790T is one of the thinnest and lightest portable navigators we've tested; it's the best looking, too. Voice Command is truly hands-free and can be activated merely by speaking to the Nuvi. Bluetooth calling also helps drivers keep their hands on the wheel. Traffic data is free.
The bad: The glossy screen tends to create a good deal of glare when used in direct sunlight. Traffic data cannot be accessed while using the device in the hand.
The bottom line: The Garmin Nuvi 3790T is an exceptional portable navigation device with just the right blend of form and function.

great looking..BAD battery life, low speaker volume
by artrusli on September 11, 2010
Pros: nice looking. glass surface is not easily scratched., very thin.. light weight..
Cons: I just got mine, no more than 2 days. fully charged the battery and is only good up to 2 hr, it is less than 2 hours.the satellite lock takes too long... longer than those chinese OEM brand GPS products.plus the volume of the speaker is just so loww

Summary: I originally don't care about the price when i looked at the specification on the web.. .. but with the battery life below 2 hours and weak satellite signals... I wont suggest people buying it not until it is has 50% discount from msrp.. anyway, the product should be ok if we could change the battery easily...

An excellent GPS that puts my old TomTom to shame.
by Roger_Jobs on September 4, 2010
Pros: Very easy to use
Voice commands allow you to input a destination on the fly without ever taking your hands off the wheel
Very good traffic information
Excellent overallCons: Price (although you get better functionality for your money)
Must have unit plugged in using supplied car charger to get free traffic dataSummary: I've been pretty unimpressed with my old TomTom. Although it offered free maps for life and free traffic, I found it more difficult to use than it should have ...
Summary: I've been pretty unimpressed with my old TomTom. Although it offered free maps for life and free traffic, I found it more difficult to use than it should have been and the routing options were OK at best. Even with the traffic information, I never felt my old TomTom really did anything helpful with the data. It would often try to send me down alleys and unpaved service streets - not very impressive. I never felt like I could trust it.
The Garmin 3790T in contrast is everything I've always wanted in a GPS. It's easy to use, I can skip trying to type in my destination and simply say what I want and it always finds an excellent route. I wish this had been available earlier so I would have never wasted my money on that lame TomTom unit.
The Garmin 3790T is currently the #1, top rated portable GPS on Consumer Reports and I'm glad I decided to spend the extra money on this unit. It was definitely worth the price and I would do it again in a heartbeat. This is a GPS unit that you can trust to get you where you are going and I recommend it to anyone that really depends on their GPS to get them to their destination. -
Best portable GPS I've used to date!

Pros: Voice command feature rocks! Beautiful screen. Very thin. Can be put to sleep vs. shutting down. This enables quick startup and go.
Cons: Software update instructions are completely wrong. Could not update maps until I figured out how to update the software.

Summary: As soon as I removed the 3790T from it's packaging, I was struck by it's beauty. It looks very similar to a large iPhone. However, troubles began when I tried to update the software. After downloading Garmin's Webupdater and following the update procedures, the device still booted with the old software version. After several unsuccessful attempts using the downloaded updater and Garmin's website, I finally figured out how to update. After the update tells you to disconnect the device from your computer while it restarts, which it doesn't, I left it off and simply reconnected the device to my computer and it restarted and loaded the new software update. Once I completed the update, I was able to successfully download and install the new map updates. Nice going Garmin. That's an hour of my life I can't get back. However, everything works great now and I'm happy with my purchase. The Voice Command function alone is worth the price of admission. Now, if you add some data and internet functions, you will have the perfect device...at least for me.

Do maps have elevation data? Can map detail be made available for auto and hiking info at same time or with just a click? How are maps updated and upgraded; how much? What maps are provided? So many questions, such a fluff review. Get tough, CNET!

Features I need aren't there, features I don't are.
by Stereoblind on September 4, 2010
Pros: It's thin enough to carry when not in use. The option to use it as a speakerphone is nice for people that don't already have an earpiece.
Cons: Too pricey with features I shouldn't be using while driving such as multitouch and a rotating screen to name two that were pointed out in the article. If I'm a hiker there are other devices for the price that would be more useful at that price.
Summary: I have a TomTom with free maps for life, free traffic, map corrections I can make and submit myself and what's called IQ Routes. That means when real life ...
Summary: I have a TomTom with free maps for life, free traffic, map corrections I can make and submit myself and what's called IQ Routes. That means when real life travel times differ from calculated travel times my next route is recalculated using actual usage. All that for $199 or less if it's on sale. I'll trade a sleek interface for more features that help me get around town more efficiently any day.
