Summary: This is by far the best gps with the new firmware update. I feel most bad reviews on magellan are from garmin uses who dont own the device. It has compass(very easy to find press page) ,has full satalite view(press page again). Can use mapsend maps by entering 2nd thru 12 serial digits. FULL TOPO support with unbelivable detail. Returned my feature barren garmin and never looked back

It's a $400 Flashlight/Paper Weight

Pros: Looks nice, Buttons feel good, Well Built.
Cons: Missing USB cable & CDs, Buttons don't respond half the time, Missing compass screen and Sat. Screen.

Summary: My Triton 1500 came from Radio Shack and I have to say I am extremely disappointed. No USB cable, No VantagePoint CD and No manual CD. All of which are stated as included on the side of the box. The buttons don't work half the time, you have to keep pressing and pressing, or move with the stylus and then the button will work. There is no screen to see how many satellites you have and what their signal is. You only have 5 little bars like a cell phone. I hear they may have fixed this in a new firmware. It is extremely limited on info. screens and features in the software. The only screen you have to look at is the map screen, no compass screen, no virtual road screen, or other various screens like their other models. The box shows a compass screen but I found no way of bringing it up. It's easy for anyone to figure out how to use because there are no advanced features or much in the way of customizing what you want.
The OS I see is Windows CE 5.0 core. This is basically a pocket PC with a GPS chip and Magellan software.
The flashlight is nice and works. The body and style of the unit is very nice. That’s about all the good I can say about the unit.
I had been looking forward to this GPS since this summer. I'm returning it tomorrow.
I did call Magellan customer service line to ask them about the missing parts and what they were doing about it. I would have had better luck talking to a wall. The guy I talked to couldn’t understand a single word of clear, slow spoken English. After him repeating nonsense babble to me he put me on hold. After waiting several more minutes I gave up.Updated
My opinion has completely changed on the Triton 1500. The one I received was not suppose to have been shipped. It was an incomplete unit with unfinished software.
One of the managers at Magellan got a hold of me and replaced the unit free with a new one that had everything in the box and working software.
The unit is very nice. I'm quite happy with it and would rate it as 5 stars now.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Not compatible with many other GPS software
by FLERCHINGER on March 22, 2011
Pros: Nice color screen.
Cons: I was really disappointed to find out the Magellan Triton is not compatible with my Terrain Navigator software. Apparently it is compatible with only a limited number of software programs.

Nice flashlight and "easy to use", empty base maps.
by jcocke on September 20, 2009
Pros: Unit has a solid, well made case. Easy to move from screen to screen. Speedometer works well. Easy to plug in way points and follow your location on cartoon-like base maps.
Cons: Borterline impossible to load maps on this unit. Intructions, both written and online, take you in circles and are very confusing. Customer service is in India and they just refer you back to internet. Don't understand slow, well-spoken english.

Summary: I'm an infantry officer in the Army. We train out in the field a lot. That is one of the reasons I bought this unit. I have had so much trouble getting simple maps, which I had to purchase, loaded on this thing. I still have had no success. I don't know if I'll ever get it working properly. I do know that no one in my unit will be using Magellan products. With no maps, my watch-gps from 5 years ago has better graphics and is easier to use. I'm afraid if I call customer service again, I'll lose my mind and my manners. Going to sell it on Craigslist. YOU HEARD IT FROM A U.S. INFANTRY SOLDIER, BUY GARMIN !!!

Works great
by discoboogie on June 21, 2009
Pros: solid, touch screen, easy to use display, intuitive
Cons: buttons don't always work, sometimes it seems like the unit locks up...or is it the keys?

Summary: I bought the unit in Vancouver at Canadian Tire for $400, used it at the airport for a while before a fishing trip, was very user friendly and worked well even without any extra software. I got to the Lodge and brought the unit out for the first day of fishing, loaded in some way points for some buoys and could never seem to find them, luckily there was an emergency GPS in the boat so we fired it up and realized mine was off by about 3 miles. When I got back to town I replaced the unit and found out it was on for $200 and replace the unit, with the extra money bought the Topo Canada and played with the software and unit at home. It gives me the right coordinates and seems to be working great, very good deal at $200 at Canadian Tire. All of the accessories were in both boxes, so no problems there.

First one failed, not repaired properly, refurb sent.
by lamibill on February 14, 2009
Pros: It knows where it is.
Cons: Will not connect to anything but Magellan software. (no Google Earth, or other pc gps programs).. Base map has little detail. Some functions are nonfunctional e.g.nema usb "reserved for future use".
Summary: Great if you want to invest in Magellan's map products or want to view cartoonish base maps.

Nice GPS device

Summary: I'm surprised by the other reviews. I heard some early products were shipped without cables, but the company was pretty quick to send me a new one, and I don't see that as reflective of the product's usabilty. Touchscreen is easy to use and very clear except in brightest sunlight, great National Geographic maps. For a first release of a new platform, I'm happy so far, if eager for more firmware updates to fix bugs.

Summary: Buttons don't work half of the time. Hold switch does not work. Nothing in the box but GPS, Stylus and Batteries. Missing data cable, documentation and software. Off Shore Customer Support is useless, could not understand or communicate. They told me to call back later... Three email support requests garnered nothing more than a canned promise to get back to me. I will never buy another Magellan product!

I sent this thing back to where it came from

Summary: I received the Magellan Triton 1500 on Wednesday. I am sending it back today. It was definately not worth the price tag. When I got it, it was missing half of the contents of the box including the USB Data Cable which allows you to load maps. I called Magellan and after a run-around with their outsourced tech support, they told me they do not have any USB Data Cables in stock at all to send me and it could be weeks before they get them in. Then I called NewEgg where I ordered it from, and they made me pay a restocking fee of $50 to send it back even though all of the boxes they have are missing the things from them so they cannot replace it for me with one that does. It was also missing the CD. I used the product for a couple of hours to go geocaching, and the software on the unit kept giving me error messages and was really slow to update any time you clicked on anything. It gave me errors when I tried to attach a sound recording to a waypoint. The VantagePoint software is also very buggy. Trying to zoom in on the maps it crashed. Trying to browse through various menu items it crashed. Magellan support was terrible so I am returning this item. I ordered a Delorme Earthmate GPS PN-20 today instead.
