The good: iLife '06 improves performance and integration between applications. GarageBand 3 has podcast studio capabilities, and iWeb lets you create Web pages easily.
The bad: Some applications, especially GarageBand, are RAM hungry or require a .Mac membership to realize their full potential. iWeb is not yet mature. Also, service and support for iLife has waned since last year's version.
The bottom line: If you don't already have iLife and you deal with digital media, you should get iLife '06. If you have an older version, think carefully about whether the new features are worth the price.

Essential upgrade or must buy if you don't have it

Pros: can publish iWeb pages to non-.Mac site. Easy podcast creation and iWeb.
Cons: Lose some features when uploading to non-Mac site.

Summary: I got this product on Wednesday after immediately ordering it when the apple store came back online. Since then I have re-done my personal webpage in iWeb in 2 hours (to get the same look would have taken me 12 hours in GoLive) and can now create podcasts in one place instead of need several steps and hours in time. Plus you can publish to non-.Mac sites.
iPhoto speed is noticeably increased and has new options for ordering informaiton. Photocasting is nice way to share ever evolving phto galleries with friends and family (i.e. baby pictures) iMovie and iDVD are still great with new animation and widescreen themes.
However, iWeb and Garageband podcasting are MAJOR CHANGES. You can easily create gorgeous webpages. I do lots of HTML in GoLive and you can do things much faster and prettier in iWeb. You can publish to non-.Mac accounts but you will have to configure password protection manually, you also loose some of the cool AJAX based slideshow features, but not a deal breaker for me as I don't do major photogalleries outside of .Mac. You can try simpleviewer for easy flash gallery creation from iPhoto galleries (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051021061733229&query=simpleviewer)
For those that have GoLive etc, I have created a documen in iWeb as layout is really easy to do, then modified the resulting HTML files in GoLive for password protection and forms submission that aren't in iWeb yet for non-.Mac sites. Much easier than GoLive alone.
The garageband podcasting is amazing. It really does a good job of modulation your voice after using just the built in microphone on your mac. Also adjusts the volume of the background music so you voice stands out and easy insertion of photos.
Overall, really great. I like that you get most of iWeb's functionality with or without .Mac so you don't have to spend more money if you don't want to (I have a .Mac account plus 4 other webistes to manage so that is cool).2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Limited functionality without .Mac subscription

Summary: I have a love/hate relationship with the iLife suite. The individual apps are fantastic and allow the novice to generate impressive creative output. But every now and then, I find that Apple has disabled some important feature (eg, letting users post comments on your iWeb blog) for no apparent reason except to force users to pay $100 a year for a .Mac subscription that most people will have no other need for. With record profits from iPod and computer sales, is it really necessary to resort to these tactics?

Summary: iLife is a really great suite, and I've purchased every upgrade since '04, and because of that I wish there were an upgrade price (perhaps $50?) but, given the number of programs, and what you can do with them, I think that you are getting your $80 worth.
iPhoto is more powerful and streamlined than before, and the editing tools remind me of a "mini" Aperture.
iMovie and iDVD have raised the bar once again, and now an average user can create professional looking video without being a film school grad.
iTunes is iTunes. No need to go into details, chances are you already have the latest version anyway.
Garageband has taken it's place as king of easy home recording in my book. I'm a hobby musician, and I learned Garageband in about 10 minutes. This new version gives you podcasting features that are on par with any "professionally" made podcast, complete with "jingles" and all.
iWeb is another app I really like, however, as somebody who uses Dreamweaver I was hoping for it to be more flexible and dynamic. For a theme-based web site creator, it does really well and you can even export your pages to HTML if you don't want or have a .Mac account. Bottom line, iWeb is fast, easy and looks really good.
I think that iLife '06 is worth every penny and I would recommend it to all Mac users. I only wish that PC owners could get a similar suite for under $100.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Where else can you get 5 excellent apps for $79?
by pn2006 on August 9, 2007
Pros: ease of use, integration, intuitive gui, great templates
Cons: some apps are memory pigs, iWeb needs upgrades
Summary: What gives with Cnet? They get an entirely brand new app (iWeb) and rate it '06 lower than '05? That's just retarded.

Granted, iWeb needs a lot of work, but come on - you be hard pressed to find an app like iWeb for less than the price of this entire suite.
All in all, at $16 per app, this is a killer suite. -

Garageband, I don't use. .mac needs a service based on monthly fees?!?! iMovie HD can'tbe fully functional because I don't have a Quartz Extreme and Core Image compatible video card ($280)!!!! It seems like Apple has gone to MS Business University making people buying extra stuff they don't use!! I'm sticking with my ATI AIW Bundle.

Great Software only a few flaws
by ahawkeyes on November 18, 2006
Pros: Works well, Optimized for intel processors
Cons: For iWeb you need a .Mac subscription to post a web site, iPhoto was better in last version
Summary: Great products not much wrong except that iWeb needs a .Mac subscription to post on web easily and in iPhoto they took some features out of it for some reason

Great program set!
by askaskask on October 24, 2006
Pros: Great programs! iMovie is awesome as a simple video editor! DVD Studio also great, simple. iPhoto very easy, simple and extensive. iWeb is a great idea. Garageband very addicting :p
Cons: Needs iWork to be included in package, some missing features.
Summary: I'd like to see Keynote included. iMovie needs 2 video tracks. iPhoto needs better editing tools.

Good, but being anti-mpg is Apple's HUGE MISTAKE
by cleibowicz on July 30, 2006
Pros: easy to use, beautiful interface, complete, no need of pro software

Summary: I bought a MAC MINI earlier this year and made it my ¨living room hub¨, put my photos, my music, etc. No TV tuner but still beautiful and now I can watch/show my photos in my 42 plasma screen. Great.
I find it absolutely horrendous the lack of mpg friendliness:
1- In quicktime you can't build a playlist, you need to click files one by one to watch them.
2- Iphoto doesn't play mpg movies from my digital camera. It opens quick time when I try to see them.
3- And finally....IMOVIE DOESN'T DEAL WITH MPG FILES!!!!! It imports them, but without sound. I'd say this alone was sufficient for me to switch completely to Apple. Come'on!! -

It's Great - Add .Mac and its Dyno-Mite!
by wdlee123 on April 20, 2006

Summary: If a manufacturer seeks the best software experience they should build their own hardware. Apple's done it with iLife 06. iPhoto users alone have plenty of reasons to upgrade. For example the auto photo enhancement feature alone that improves color and contrast with a single click is very well developed in this release. It's not PhotoShop but it's very accurate. Add a .Mac account and this jewel does just about everything. Its the MS Office for the rest of your life for sure!
I disagree with CNET about value; however, if $79 seems high for what you get - wait a couple months, buy a new Apple Intel machine, and Apple throws in iLife free. And for window users - why not do the same thing and dual boot into windows xp pro with Apple Boot Camp Public Beta. Then enjoy the same Apple experience while running PC Apps on the partitioned hard drive. I cant think of any better value on the planet! Come into the light, there is peace in the light!1 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.
