Better then a 9600xt
Pros: I have two identical comps, one with a 9600xt and one with a new 9550. tested them both against doom3 and hl2 on "high" graphics, the 9550 out performed my 9600 with doom and were equal with hl2. great option if you don't want to spend $300
Cons:

great card for a good price
Pros: Dual monitor support AND video out for multimedia PC uses, fast GPU and 256Mb DDR/SGRAM. Can play full resolution games without giving up shading and other features.
Cons: Limited documentation even on ATI's website - no product manual on their support website even though they mention the card on the product pages. Occasional crashes when playing certain video files, VPU recovers but no reason why this happens is apparent

Does have video out, but no video in. (video in cards are cheap as hell anyways, 50$ CDN)
Pros: 256MB Enhanced shading Streaming videos look much better(less pixilated) fast clock 8X AGP
Cons: No video in ◘

Great card for the price.
by John Porcello on July 6, 2006
Pros: If on a budget this card delivers a lot of bang for the buck. It runs everything that I've thrown at it so far. I didn't have the money for a better card, but I am very happy with what I've got
Cons: I haven't tested all of this card's capabilities, but the biggest problem that I've come across is that after a time the screen images appear faded and washed out and I have to reboot.
Summary: I know that far better cards are on the market, but would recomend this one to anyone who is on a budget but wants a 256 meg video card.

A great value for gamers looking for an inexpensive video solution with dual monitor support.
by Uber_Gamer on March 24, 2006
Pros: Inexpensive, good gaming and cinematic video, dual monitor support.
Cons: No PCI-E support for those with more powerful video demands.

Summary: This card is a great value for someone looking to play the majority of today's games and movies on the PC with dual-monitor support as a bonus. It manages to play even some of more graphically complicated games such as Doom 3 and Painkiller without any trouble in the games' medium-high range performance settings.
I was also surprised at how well it handles games designed for nVidia developed cards, and older games that had some compatibility issues with an older GeForce 3 Ti which it replaced. Even some of nVidia's own demos ran fine on it.
The drivers and display software are sturdy and I have had no instability issues in the month I've been using this setup, neither with nor without dual monitors enabled.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

ATI Radeon 9550 256MB AGP -sounds and looks good, but does it perform that way?
by cpt-bbb on November 13, 2006
Pros: Looks pretty flash -a 256mb video card
Cons: Can't handle most PC games, crashes on most basic of applications.
Summary: So you found a nice old Windows 2000 PC in the back of the garage, and decided as a weekend hobby, that you'll do it up. Firstly lets replace ...
Summary: So you found a nice old Windows 2000 PC in the back of the garage, and decided as a weekend hobby, that you'll do it up. Firstly lets replace that motherboard with a nice new one, not flash, but able to handle XP.
So you decide to get an OK video card. In the shop you see a lovely cheap $99 Radeon 9550 (this card). You think, "what a perfect find". Mistake number 1.
After a hands on checkup I find the Radeon 9550 not good at all.
Rise of Nations Gold Edition -crashed.
City Life -crashed.
Half-Life 1 & 2 -crashed.
Farcry -obviously crashed.
You get the idea. But suddenly out of the blue:
Internet Explorer -crashed due to a video card error.
ATI thankfully decided to respond to this review:
"The Ati Radeon 9550 graphics card was not designed to play high-definition, or high level graphic, games, including the examples above. The error involving Internet Explorer has occurred in numerous occasions, we have been alerted to situations where even the simplest of programs have crashed, for example, Notepad, Wordpad, Paint.
The Ati Radeon 9550 is not the fault of these problems. The fault lies with the monitor. Usually your monitor is too old for the video card, but quite often it can be affected by the monitor drivers. Make sure you keep these up to date."
I hate to say it but that sounds like ATI is saying a lot of er... bull-you-know-what.
ATI's solution to the 9550 problem may not have helped you. If so here's my solution:
I would recommend if you wanted a good video card for a "killer machine" then do what I am, stick with NVIDEA not ATI.
EVGA NForce 680i SLI mainboard
2x GeForce 8800 768MB video card in SLI MODE
But if your on a lower budget, the best idea is to go with the NVidea Geforce 7600 GT (256MB).
Thanks for taking the time to read this review, and I hope it makes you realise that cheap ain't really better, especially in ATI's case. Don't get me wrong though, I don't hate ATI I just think that NVidea's cards are a lot better quality...1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

This card is dependable but only suitable for a barebones pc
by Lyall Johnson on August 2, 2008
Pros: as dependable,
Cons: as an up-to-10k/ph tractor blasting down the highway.

Summary: the 9550 is super-dependable, like an old ford, you feel it churning away and trying it's best to keep up but with that lacklustre analogy comes the inevitable conclusion, it just can't keep up with even older games.
It's no fault of the poor 9550, it's been around for a while and offers the poorer amongst us (like myself) a solid - if unsatisfactory - gaming experience.
the 9550 barely cuts it with 3-5year old games like most wanted (highest resolution, NO prettifiers), GTA san andreas (as before), etc. and I would suggest you opt to rather hold onto your pennies and scrounge up for a card with less wrinkles. I've had this card for two years (don't take out the pitchforks!) and it has never disappointed - in fault terms that is.
Get this card only if you want to keep your young'un put and money is tight.
