Over hyped card with no customer support

Summary: ATI Technologies new X1000 series what can I say mmmmmm .......I know never again! I have owned a number of their older cards for years and thought I was happy. I was replacing an old ATI Radeon 9200 SE 128MB DDR AGP8X. I was really expecting a major boost in my video performance. Considering I was not only increasing the video cards ram by a power of four. I was also installing more pipelines with new and supposedly improved architecture. All the "professional" articles raved about the X1000 series performance based upon a number of tests, trials, etc. Lots of meaningless charts and fanfare. You know what I am talking about. In reality in a real machine not even a year old yet, the card failed to impress me. For all the money I spent on this video card my game performance in frames per second has only improved maybe twice as fast as the old card. For real time game play no advantage or noticeable improvement. Buying this card and expecting a real zip to gaming is like throwing money down a toilet and expecting more back.
This is only the tip of this dismal iceberg. When I installed the card I kept getting this message "zero display service error" what this means I don't know. ATI does not even have a response for it. Check the internet and wow lots of problems! ATI required me to obtain a "ticket" for my concern. This consumer pacifier is all ATI has provided, no solutions, no advice. The other issue is only once have I been able to set the cards settings (full performance for me), otherwise I am still are shut out of the Catalyst Control Center. The message states that I need to contact my system administrator in order to obtain access. What do you know that's me! ATI's tech support doesn't list this message either, check the NET. The fan issue concerns me, it is very quite but what happens when it fails? Is the whole card toast or can the fan be replaced? We all know that the fans will and do fail inside our computers what about this card?
I have downloaded all the drivers, ATI's software remover, reinstalled all the software ... ah but always the same messages. Always no support from ATI (check the WEB, wow!) what can I tell you, if I was to do it all over would I still buy any ATI product. Only with a gun to my head. This is inexcusable for an organization in business this long and with this much market share. I can only guess what new B.S. cards are in the works. I am sure that the magazines which get free samples, jackets, what ever; will be wowed by the technological aspect of the new cards. Personally I trust you more and more for my purchasing decisions. Real people like you and me who use products in real world conditions. That I trust.Updated
NO thanks to ATI, but after ALOT of WEB searching the solution to get access to your CAT control center is to remove Netframe 2.* and replace it with the older Windows Ver. 1.1
Now I have full access to the complete line of feature that where advertised with this card. Have I seen a frame rate improvement? Lets dumb that down. Do I see any improvement now that I have access to set all parameters of this card? Naaaaa none.
Back to the solution. Roll back the software to older verions of Netframe??? This is ATI's idea of state of the art hardware and software support!!? Back that up with no customer support for problems, good luck people! With out the internet and dumb luck I would have been without any real support or help.
I can only speculate that the other two reviews to this point are people who are ADDING a video card to an orginal on board video system.6 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Exactly what I wanted. 512MB superfast card for Oblivion.
by sossias on May 5, 2006
Pros: Fast card. It was easy to set up and has lots of memory on board.
Cons: No games bundled in the box.

Summary: I was getting rediculously low frame rates in Call of Duty 2 with the lame 128MB graphics card that came with my computer. I finally broke down and decided to get a new card when I played Elder Scrolls Oblivion at my friends house. I had to get a new card for this game. My buddy's got a 256MB Radeon X800 so I figured an X1600 with 512Mb should be twice as good. The price was right anyway and I haven't been disappointed. I'm about 10 hours into oblivion right now and it is a thing to behold. I'm in heaven.

Summary: This card was a much needed upgrade to my previous 2 year old card. I found a great deal with rebate on cnet.com and said I would try it out. This was the first upgrade I have done to my 2 year old Dell home PC. It couldnt have been easier, I opened the case, took the old card out, put the new card in, closed the case and installed the software on the cd. I was playing Sims2 and Battlefield2 mostly but the difference in speed was mind blowing. Not to mention that things just looked crisper and nicer. Next i popped in a DVD, and saw the video in a new light. Very clear.
My favortie PC purchase in a long time!4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Fantastic video card
by nerv2010 on May 30, 2006
Pros: Easy install, great graphics increase
Cons: Cost, cost, and oh yes, cost.
Summary: After getting years of enjoyment out of the old 9800XT classic, it was finally time to upgrade with the X1600 and it was a breeze.
Custom PC w/ASUS P4C800E ...Summary: After getting years of enjoyment out of the old 9800XT classic, it was finally time to upgrade with the X1600 and it was a breeze.
Custom PC w/ASUS P4C800E Deluxe board and new BIOS. No problems whatsoever with the install. Just be sure to remove the old video card drivers before installation.
Performace is as promised with great gains in 3D and in 3D programs. The returns are not as noticable with 2D support. There is no noticable gains in DVD playing though but it's probably my old DVD drive being the limiting factor.
The only downside is the $200+ price for an AGP card but it's the only option I looked at for an AGP upgrade.
Overall, it is a fantastic upgrade from the trusty 9800XT. Maya, video games, photoshop, are all running much smoother and no noticable problems so far. Very rewarding purchase.2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Great card, paid slightly over a hundred for it. Great for those of use still using AGP. Tons of memeory 512mb. It's a fairly new model line. Only downside is that its not over clocked. I've seen ATI x800's that are oc'd perform better. Best I could find for a hundred.
Avoid the x1300, ATI really dropped the ball with those ones. The x1600 is affordable and will play all your media, really comes in handy if your cpu is a bit slower.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I just bought the card and am overall very satisfied with the performance of the card. Now you have to be realistic obviously the card's performance cannot be compared to some of the more expensive ATI or Nvidia cards out there. As a regular gamer I can say I have ran alot of the latest games and the performace is very good at the highest levels. I got the card for $150 canadian and I am realistic in my expectations and can say I was not dissapointed..... For people who dont have $400 or $500 to blow on a card. This card is the BEST bang for the buck out there. Hope this Helped! O yes it also supports SM 3.0 which some of the new games like Rainbow Six: Vegas require.

Summary: I bought this yesterday from newegg.com. The price was right for my AGP graphics mother board. I bought it to replace the dying card that came with my computer. The one I had in there was a Sapphire redeon 9800 pro. It lasted 3 years. My previous tests with the old card got me 200 mp/s. The new card got me 150 mp/s at pcpitstop.com. I am not happy with that.
I don't know how to accelerate graphics cards. So may be the performance can be enhanced. I don't know.
