I'm a convert...

Summary: Being a long time Palm/PalmOS user I had my heart set on a Palm T series but after reading many reviews and talking with co-workers that use Dell/Pocket PC, I made the switch. One of the primary decisions was due to the fact that the T series that I was looking at did not have built in WiFi. I've been using my X50V for about a month now and I LOVE IT!!
WHY IT GETS AN '8'
+ The screen resolution is beautiful and the portrait/landscape option is wonderful
+ It synchs effortlessly with my office Outlook
+ The variety of writing input methods is a real bonus
+ 3D games really show off its power
+ Quick-browsing the Web is nice and I can even control my other PCs through Remote Desktop. COOL!
+ WiFi & BlueTooth!
+ SD & CF Slots!
WHY IT DIDN'T GET A '9'
- Battery life does suck somewhat but I'm hardly ever away from a power source so not a big deal.
- A bit more bundled softwary; even shareware would have been nice.
- buttons are a bit on the small side
(To get a '10' from me the device would have to rub my feet after a hard day's work)
Expansion memory is a must (high-speed SD 1 GB)! Considering an extra battery for those long flights. Definitely considering the GPS which includes a car charger.22 out of 22 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great Unit Once You Work Out The Bugs ...

Summary: I use my Axim extensively and the X50v's superior display is worth the extra money. The ergonomics are great. Now here are the problems: If you turn off the wireless features, you cannot get them to work after turning them back on unless you also soft reset the device. This problem exist for the Blue Tooth Keyboard and the wireless B. Also, the device has a wrist strap hook, but finding a wrist strap you can attach to it is extremely difficult (the hole on the unit is very small). I finally found a camera wrist strap on Ebay that I could hook to it. It is beyond belief that Dell does not sell one. Also, the extra capacity battery almost doubles the thickness of the unit, but it is worth it for a long day of use. Overall, I love the device and it performs better than I expected. The wireless features are great if you have access to hotspots. One more note, the 3D games that come with it are crappy. You are better off downloading Bejeweled 2.
Updated
Update: About a week ago the unit died. DEAD and I mean DEAD. Not paniking (because it was backed up and still under warranty) - I called Dell support. Well they had me take out the battery, hold the power button down for about a minute, then hook it up to the charging cable, then turn it on. Can you believe it actually worked. I had to reset it up (which I think should be done periodically anyway) and so far no problems. Dell Support actually saved the day. Moral of the story: Back it up.21 out of 22 users found this user opinion helpful.

A beautiful device with a good price-performance ratio.
by kfatica on April 22, 2005
Pros: Crisp screen, thin profile, built-in wireless solutions, built-in SD and CF slots.
Cons: Easy to accidentally press buttons on the side of unit, don't care for the feel of the power button, stylus is so thin it's sometimes awkward to use and sometimes a pain to put in the storage silo.

Summary: After having owned a Palm IIIxe, then moving up to a H-P iPAQ 3955, I thought it would be tough to beat the Compaq. Though an excellent performer, I grew tired of the bulk of the 3955, especially since I was using it with the Expansion Pack Plus for extra battery life and a CF expansion slot.
I've enjoyed the power of the PocketPC operating system and decided to look again at iPAQ devices. I wanted a more powerful processor, but more importantly I wanted the convenience of having expansion slots built-in to the unit. I also wanted wireless capabilities without having to use an external add-on.
When I began looking at higher-end iPAQs, the price began climbing well above $500. I couldn't justify spending that much when I was merely upgrading out of desire, not necessity. I decided to look at Dell Axims. Two of my friends raved about their older Axims and a little research led me to look at the x50v. It had all the features I wanted plus an affordable price. I purchased mine for $425 directly from Dell in March of '05.
So far I've been very impressed with its performance, particularly using Wi-Fi. I have a home wireless network. With my iPAQ using an external Linksys card I could not wander through the house and get a signal, but with the Dell x50v I have been able to wander two floors up from the base unit and still have a respectable signal! I have not tried the Bluetooth feature yet because I've not outfitted either of my computers with it, but I do expect to have a Bluetooth phone in the near future, so I'm looking forward to being able to utilize it.
The screen is razor-sharp and it took a little adjusting to get used to it. The pictures of my children I used to carry on my iPAQ revealed much more detail on the Dell and the screen was nice and bright, too. Typefaces look as they should and are very clean and easy to read.
Two immediate things that were not pleasing to me were the power button and the stylus. My old 3955 iPAQ power button gave a solid response when depressed; a firm click. The Axim, however, had a recessed button that I really had a bit of trouble getting used to. It's response was not so positive, possibly even dull (if you were to describe a click), and sometimes I had to try two times or more to get it right. My fingers are medium-sized for a man, so I might imagine a person with larger digits could have trouble.
The stylus was very thin and difficult to hold. Unlike the iPAQ, where the stylus was a bit beefier and it clicked nicely in to place in its silo, the Axim silo is notched to line up with a nub on the end of the stylus. It fits flush in to the top of the device, but you sometimes have to line-up the nub to fit in the notch. Picky, maybe, but you never get the secure feeling that it's in place and will stay there. Also, Dell gives you only one stylus. H-P gave you two.
One final thing that impressed me about this was the battery life. I've read some reviews where people have said the battery didn't last long. Well, I have to say, I'm pretty impressed that I can have my screen brightness up fairly high and surf wirelessly for at least 40 minutes continuously before I get the low battery warning. And that's at the end of the day, after the unit's been used beforehand! I've thought about purchasing the longer-life battery for it as a backup, but so far am okay with the standard battery. Oh yes, I almost forgot the unit has a built-in backup battery to help protect from storage loss.
I have become used to the feel of this device; Dell has given the case some sort of rubber treatment to the sides that make it less slippery to hold. The microfiber case, I thought, was kind of cheesey, but for now it's okay. I miss having a nice hard case for it like I had for the iPAQ, but the Innopocket magnesium case may be my next accessory purchase.
In all, I think it's hard to beat the price-performance ratio on the Dell Axim x50v. For a high-end product it's a bargain.10 out of 10 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: To preface my comments, I've been a computer professional for 25 years, so I know a thing or two about what I'm going to say. 4 hrs into use, my new Axim X50v fried BOTH the USB ports AND the Bluetooth on my Acer tablet PC during ActiveSync operation. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH AXIM X50s! Let the buyer beware! Read all about it on www.aximsite.com ("Cradle of death" thread under X50 Hardware Problems), or even on Dell's own Axim forums. Customer & tech support outsourced to India/Panama and completely incompetent. No explanation from Dell, despite the fact that this nonsense has been going on for months (prior to my misadventure). Unit returned for refund.

A03 ROM Upgrade - significant performance improvement

Summary: On April 20, Dell released the A03 upgrade for the X50 and X50v. An essential upgrade that turns this PDA into the performance powerhouse expected from the initial specifications. WiFi and Bluetooth operation works on demand; improved battery life reported; much better memory management signficantly reduces need to perform freuquent soft resets. Programs in Built-In Storage operate at expected levels; for instance AvantGo launches smoothly and reduced update sync times from over 5 min to under 1.5 min for same configuration. Ends the need to "fight" the PDA to make it perform as expected. More details at http://dicx.blogspot.com.

Returning mine - even after much research pre-purchase
Pros: The screen on this bad boy is GLORIOUS. It truly is as close as you can get to having a computer in your hand. I'm a MSWord & Excel freak, also a chronic organizer - this was going to be the PERFECT handheld PC and I couldn't wait to get it!
Cons: After being given a ship date of over a WEEK post-order, I called a few times to see if perhaps the unit had shipped early and learned that if I ASKED for it, it'd be shipped next day. "Well, YEAH, please." I've toyed with this gorgeous, sports-car-of-a

Disappointed with this product. I ordered this direct from Dell

Summary: I synched the pda to my laptop with no problem but when it asks to tap screen to setup pda it went to an align screen with a cross hair in the center. I tapped and aligned till I was blue in the face but it kept going back to the same screen. I went to Dell's site and tried everything they suggested to no avail. Then I went to users site to find a solution. I found many users in the same boat. Tried all their solutions without results. I also noticed that when a user did get rid of this screen they very often didn't know why or how that was accomplished. Also the problem reoccurs and you can be right back where you started. In the end I reluctantly returned the product to Dell for credit and am waiting for that. I might add that for the money they could give you a stylus and at least one screen protector. I had to buy these and now have no use for them.

Pros: Perfect video play back. Every option available is built in.

My focus is on video playback. I have loaded up to 1gig mpg and wmv files and the playback is flawless, DVD quality and smooth flow. The display is bright and crisp. Its ideal for day or night use.
The easy battery swap and charging system gives you more time than you will likely ever need.
The SD and CF slots allow you a range of storage options including the 6 gig microdrives.
The bluetooth and 802.11b give you a wide range of connectivity. The setup was easy.
The processor adjusts its clock speed based on performance needs saving battery power.
This is likely Dells best product for the money.
The speaker is a little weak but this doesn't effect headphone playback which is superior to other units I've tested.
If not for the speaker I would have rated this a 10.6 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Too Slow to be of use!

Summary: This handheld gives a great first impression, it fits nicely into your hand, and though it feels cheap, its sturdy enough not to fall apart right away. The buttons are nice, not too small to be used.
Once you turn it on you find out that it is infact very slow. When i tried to get to contacts it took forever. It was so slow, that i returned it for another pda. The screen is bright, but colors are washed out and the viewing angle is terrible. Web access is very slow, as is anything else. The only thing that runs at an okay speed are the games that come with it.
Dont buy this, opt for a 320 x 240 screened pda with the same processor. 640 x 480 doesnt offer that much more, and after trying 3 models with it, i much prefer the lower resolution screens simply because they are much faster.8 out of 12 users found this user opinion helpful.
