The good: Expansion card slot; fast processor; vibrating alarm.
The bad: Lacks innovative features to warrant its price; no expansion card in the box.
The bottom line: The m500 offers some nice refinements, but the older Palm Vx is a better value for those who don't need the expansion card slot.

Thin, Compact, Reliable. Nice PDA.
Pros: Thin, lightweight, solid feel. This thing is great. People shouldn't complain about the black and white screen. They knew it was grayscale when they bought it. If they wanted color, why did they buy a grayscale pda? Duh. They also knew it only had 8mb
Cons: If you press firmly agains the cover when closed, it will activate the pda because the buttons get depressed. Other than that, it's great.

Great, useful, but some problems

Summary: I got my first m500 a few months ago, and it was great. Thin, rechargeable, stylish... and the usb syncing was faster than the serial on my old palm VIIx. It was great, except for the problem in that the scribble pad (notepad) wpould not synchronize unless I went into the program files and made an adjustment. Then, it had a hard 4-foot drop onto a linoleum floor, on top of about 3ft of solid concrete. The screen did not shatter, but would not function. Then, I got another m500, and it wouldn't sync the notepad either. Now, this PDA won't synchronize with my Windows XP computer at all, but the problem is on the computer, not the PDA. See CNET forums for some help on that, if you are experiencing similar problems. I am still trying to fix it, but I think that this PDA would be great for a basic user seeking a stylish, useful organizer.

Pretty bullet proof PDA that provides basic functions

Summary: Yes, I am writing in 2006 about a PDA from 2002. I actually bought a refurbished epocrates M500 that was packages for he medical profession. When I bought it, it was just being phased out of production and I was replacing the oringal Palm Pilot that had the memory and IR upgrade. It had finally died. I had a choice between the M500 and the M505 and picked the 500 as it had the longer battery life.
After a few false starts where it would crash and freeze, it seemed to straighten out and except for an occaisional freeze usually after I've done something such as moving to Time and Chaos from the Palm Desktop or trying Lotus Orgnanizer or Lotus Notes. However no loss of data occurred.
For extras I do have a couple of games I've added but in reality almst never use them; the unit really is used for contacts and apointments. I've tried the email function but do not use it as I do not use Express or Outlook. The checklist syncs well but sometimes when I delete, rather than deleting on the desktop app, it gets reinstalled on the PDA. Finally figured out for reliable deletions, do it through the desktop app and then update the PDA.
The unit is dated today when looking at say the TX or LifeDrive and does not include nice things like wifi, bluetooth, photo and vid viewing, web browsing, etc. I am getting to a point where having either web access or realtime e-mail access would be nice, I think the current crop of units are too early adoptors and will not be mature for at least another generation.
I've been thinking about updating but after looking at the current Palm product, think I'll hold pat. I've not looked at either RIM, the MS or Linux units but I've been satisfied with Palm to date so unless there is a surprise at their offerings, I'll hold pat. -
Palm Support Sucks
Pros: Backlit;rechargable battery
Cons: Support is horrible; I have been waiting for a month to have my palm m500 repaired. A defect with the M500 is the Electro-Static Discharge in which the repair device has been on backorder for the past month.

GOOD PRICE FOR enough product
Pros: cheap. It has lots of functions.
Cons: If the OS can upgrade to 5.21. It will be perfect.

Choose a different Palm offering.
Pros: The expansion slot is nice, and the Document-to-Go suite that is included is very handy. Includes all the standard PDA functionality (calendar, address book, To Do list, etc.) with single-button accessiblity. Syncs nicely with MS Outlook with the includ
Cons: This model has a known electrostatic issue that renders the unit incapable of HotSyncing. To their credit, Palm will send you a new handheld with a prepaid mailer to return the bad one. Unfortunately, I've had to do this TWICE now. It wasn't terribly i

First time user of a PDA.......
Pros: I did extensive reasearch on all makes and models, and for the money the m500 is far better then some color screen pda's which cost more money. Synking is a piece of cake and 8 megs is enough for what I need. If you want games to add you can find them at
Cons: Its a little hard to see some of the games clearly. The back light is only good in total darkness. The OS 4.1 update is not compatable with windows XP.

Grest value for price
Pros: Bought refurbished M500 for $70.00 on Ebay. Very reliable unit with standard Palm functions, plus expansion slot. Excellent battery life, which is the main reason I bought this type as opposed to others. I have yet to exhaust the battery. The longest I
Cons: Display light is useless in dim light or at dusk, but works great in near or total darkness. I wanted to sync this PDA with Outlook, and the unit did not come with the Chapura software, so I had to purchase the downloadable version. Once I did, however,

Poor Design Adapter & Cradle
Pros: Good to have it, with sense of extreme caution. No user error is tolerated.
Cons: Adapter & Cradle design is extremely BAD!! There is NO protection against the end user error. The link of adapter & the cradle is poorly designed. If the user plugs in a little different voltage adapter, surprisingly which PALM cradle allows with

Summary: If you don't care for bells and whistles, if you think it is silly to run windows application on a palmtop, if you're happy with grey scale, then the m500 is for you. Very thin, very light, very agreable to hold : it comes with me everywhere I go. As a result, I gave up paper almost entirely; I even use it to take notes during meeting. I have never had any technical problem.
