The good: The Plantronics Discovery 925 is a fashion-forward Bluetooth headset with multipoint technology, a comfortable fit, and excellent audio quality. It also has a nice portable charging case.
The bad: The Plantronics Discovery 925 has just one volume control button and no call mute. Also, its design isn't for everyone, and it's a tad on the expensive side.
The bottom line: The Plantronics Discovery 925 is an eye-catching headset with a comfortable fit and great sound quality.
Save for a few exceptions, Bluetooth headset designs haven't changed much over the past few years. Most of them just look progressively smaller and blockier. There are some standouts though, like the Aliph Jawbone with its perforated shell, and the Callpod Dragon with its circular disc shape. This year, Plantronics is entering the fashionable headset market with one of the most different-looking headsets we've seen to date, the Plantronics Discovery 925. It comes with its own leather charging case, and Plantronics even showed it around during New York Fashion Week 2008, fully stamping it with luxury fashionista status. Looks aside, the Discovery 925 has quite a comfortable fit plus great audio performance. It'll cost you, though, as it is currently retailing at $149.95 per unit.
To put it bluntly, the Discovery 925 looks like a giant paper clip or hair pin. Measuring 2.7 inch long by 0.9 inch wide by 0.5 inch deep, the Discovery 925 is topped with a square diamond, and the boom mic tapers down to a point, forming a hollow trianglelike shape in the middle. The boom mic also houses the headset's antenna. It is very lightweight, only weighing about 0.28 ounce, and certainly won't weigh the ear down. The overall look is stylish and one-of-a-kind, but as we said, we can't help but think of it as more hair accessory than Bluetooth headset. The Discovery 925 comes in black, gold, and cerise (a purplelike hue) at the outset, but will have more colors later on.
The aforementioned square diamond houses the multifunction button directly on top of it, as well as a LED indicator light. It's nice and big, and is very easy to press, even when worn on the ear. On the top left is a singular volume control button. Instead of a rocker that can increase and decrease the volume, you have to use the volume control button to toggle through three volume levels. We weren't too pleased about this, but we understand it is probably because of size constraints. On the top right is the charger jack.
On the back you get a very simple and small in-ear style earpiece along with a gel eartip cover. The eartip has a square loop that lets the earpiece fit in the ear without the help of an ear hook. The Discovery 925 comes with small, medium, and large eartips for different size ears. We found the fit to be snug and secure, though it does take a bit of maneuvering to have it fit properly--it's suggested that the boom mic should point toward the corner of the mouth for optimal voice clarity.
Features of the Discovery 925 aren't too different from other Plantronics headsets. There's the typical answering, ending, and rejecting calls, as well as voice-dial support, last-number redial, and the capability to transfer calls from the headset to the phone and vice versa. A nice bonus feature is the 925 supports Multipoint technology, which lets you pair up to two different Bluetooth devices at once. This way you can use one headset with two different phones.
The Discovery 925 comes with a leather charging case that looks a lot like a lipstick case. You can charge up the case along with the headset for extra battery life.
We tested the Plantronics Discovery 925 Bluetooth headset with the RIM BlackBerry Pearl, and the pairing process went very smoothly thanks to the Discovery 925's QuickPair system that automatically places the headset in pairing mode when it's turned on for the first time. Call quality was excellent, with audio performance comparable with landline quality. This is probably because of Plantronics' AudioIQ digital signal processing technology that reduces background noise considerably. Callers reported that our voice sounded very natural, and we thought the same of them. That said, it didn't perform so well in windy environments.
The Plantronics Discovery 925 has a rated talk time of 5 hours. It had a rated standby time of 7.29 days with the Multipoint technology turned off, and a rated standby time of 4.16 days when it's turned on.

First Impression:
Great design, Great Fit, Great little charger, Extremely easy pairing, Great incoming sound, and very good outgoing. Audio IQ is pretty smart but not a genius. Worked good and was audible with my car windows down (all four) and an 18 wheeler passing by. I was impressed.
Then I took a walk....light breeze made the Audio IQ into a babbling fool. It cannot handle wind of anysort going into the mic. So I was about to return it, but held on til I tried the etyBLU.
Bought the etyBLU looked great, looking forward to using the boom with the windscreen, but the fit was torturous. Went too far into your head, and never, never, never stayed put. It sounded good out going. But answering or making a call pressing the button felt like I was going to do brain surgery through my ear! ONE GOOD thing came out of it. I put the wind screen onto my Plantronics 925.
Now my Plantronics 925 is outfitted with the windscreen I immediately bought from the Etymotics site, slightly shaped the foam to be tailored to the 925 boom. Viola! I tested it 3" from my fan on high and I was PERFECTLY AUDIBLE!
So here's the perfect combo in my opinion.
Plantronics 925 with the etyBLU small windscreen. Now I'd give it a 10/10 Audio IQ got it's genius.32 out of 32 users found this user opinion helpful.

After trying many, this is the best!

Summary: So, I am a former Jawbone user who has tried many headsets. I have tried expensive and inexpensive units, and this is by far the best. Most recently, I had an original Jawbone, which had some flaws, but was usable, if expensive.
After losing my Jawbone in a thunderstorm, I tried to replace it with the Jawbone 2, which took some minor flaws from the original and blew them up to major status. I tried and tried and eventually returned it for a 925. What a difference!
The 925 has great sound, no volume issues, fits p[perfectly in my difficult to fit ear, and has some very nice touches that make it the best in class. First of these is the carrying case, a necessity for me as a frequent flyer. Not only is there a nice case, but the case has its' own battery and charges the unit when docked The case is nice and small, and fits easily in any pocket, while protecting my prized 925.
The other small but nice touch is a lanyard that attaches to the 925, so you never have to worry about losing it when it's being worn.
All this, plus a pretty design, great sound and full features have made this my new favorite toy, despite a previous dislike for having to use a headset at all.
You won't be disappointed - guaranteed. Also, look for sales, as I found mine for $100, saving $30+ off the jawbone for a much better product.18 out of 18 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excelent Headset with on a few minor issues

Summary: My Jabra JX10 died so I replaced it with the Plantronics 925, I think the 925 is the best looking headset avalable by far but thats pretty subjective I guess, I hate the looks of the Aliph Jabone for example. Pairing was a no brainer and the sound quality couldnt be much better, The volume is changed to one of 3 settings by pressing a volume control button on the top read of the headset, A rocker switch for the volume would have been a nice touch, it is so light and comfortable that after wearing it for a few minutes you forget it's there and it has no earhook. it is recommended that the earpiece be charged for 3 hours before use but mine came fully charged as did the charging case, I think the 925 costs a bit too much but all in all it does what it is supposed to do very well and has a solid feel to it.

Very comfortable and best sound of the 7 I tested.

Pros: Great sound (for Bluetooth), lightweight, great fit
Cons: Not as immune to wind as some

Summary: I bought and briefly tested the Aliph Jawbone II, the the Jabra BT8040, the Motorola H800, the Blue Ant Z9i, and the Plantronics 360, 520, and 925. I didn't use any of them for an extended period as I was mainly trying to get the best sound both for receiving and talking. The Jawbone II and Blue Ant Z9i both sounded a bit tinny to me, probably due to excessive DSP. The Jabra 8040 was so quiet that it was unusable if there was any ambient noise. The Plantronics 520 and the Motorola H800 both had decent sound, but in A/B testing the Plantronics 925 sounded significantly louder and clearer than any of the others. I did not do any A/B testing in noisy environments, so the noise cancelling technology of the Jawbone or Blue Ant may be better there, but I was mainly going for normal sound quality. I also love the fit of the 925 (no annoying ear loop).

Way Better Than I Expected
by jwnrw on September 5, 2008
Pros: Fit, sound, charging options
Cons: No mute button on headset, volume control is a toggle up only rather than a rocker. The mic boom rubbing alongside of your face can get annoying at times.

Summary: I have been using a Jabra JX10 for the past couple of years, and have been looking to change it. I initially tried a Blueant z9, but that was nothing short of a horrible product in just about every way. The Discovery 925, on the other hand, is quite a good product overall, and performs well beyond expectations.
Setup/Pairing with both an older BlackBerry 7xxx series as well as my 8100 series Pearl was easy and quick. Reconnection once you have paired the device is essentially immediate so no problems there. It works seamlessly with the Pearl's voice activation feature, redial, and other calling features without issue.
The 925 controls are very easy to access and use - they are not small or awkward like the ones on the BlueAnt. The volume is a toggle-up switch, giving you three levels, low, mid and max -- in that order. When you reach max and tap the volume control it moves back to the lowest volume setting. One particularly neat thing about the volume is that the 925 controls the volume of the phone rather than the headset itself.
I find that this actually sounds better than any of my previous bluetooth headsets, including the Jabra. One word about overall physical design, though. The 925 has a very long and relatively thin mic boom which extends along the side of the face. I found it a bit annoying at first, but am getting used to it over time as it rubs against my cheek rather than sit just off the surface of the skin. It doesn't irritate, but is just a bit annoying. One other shortcoming is that the unit does not have a mute button - so you have to control that from your phone directly. A bit of an inconvenience, but with an acceptable work-around.
The in-ear fit is excellent. Plantronics includes 3 different sized earpieces in the box - small/medium/large - anyone should be able to find one that will work for their specific ear. The unit comes with the medium sized earpiece attached, and that one seems to work fine for me -- but I haven't tried the others yet either. It is by far the most comfortable earset I have worn, hand's down. After a period of time both the Jabra and the Z9 tend to rub the outer canal of the ear, making it tender when worn over time. Adjusting the Jabra earhook sometimes fixes it, but with the Z9 nothing could relieve the extreme discomfort I was feeling. I admit, though, that it does feel a bit weird not having a loop around my ear, but on the other hand taking glasses on and off is great without having an earloop to contend with. I have used this while driving in car, and also on lengthy conference calls and can't tell it's even in my ear at all.
Incoming sound is outstanding -- the best of any of the headsets I have used. On the other side of the call, callers have mentioned that there is sometimes an echo depending on where I am speaking from. I understand of a fix that uses a windscreen from a competitor's headset, but haven't tried that yet. Other owners report that this does improve outgoing sound - and especially takes care of wind noise which can be problematic when out of doors.
Charging options are typical to Plantronics in that they supply three different options for charing the unit. Mini-to-micro USB cable to a PC, AC adaptor and a clever leather charging case. You charge up the case and once fully charged, you have enough power to fully charge the headset from zero charge. This is a really good feature, and is in-line with previous Discovery products which used a battery-pack type case to charge remotely when you didn't have access to power. It's a really good feature. The only downside to this product is the charging indicators which do not flash continuously, so you can't tell at a glance whether you are in charge mode or fully charged. The indicators flash red on a very slow cycle, so you have to look carefully to see if you are charged or not. In the end, it is something you get used to, I'd just like to see a flashing red when charging changing to green when charging is compete, that's all.
Overall this is an excellent headset. It is not cheap, but it is a very high-end product from Plantronics that performs exactly as advertised.6 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good service but unreliable product
by augustdougherty on August 29, 2008
Pros: The fit, design and weight are reasons I chose this earpiece. Good audio reception. The 925 turned out to be very comfortable. When there was a problem, my 925 was exchanged easily at both a retail outlet and online with Plantronics.
Cons: The problem for me with this device is that I've had to exchange it twice. Once because it wouldn't pair with a Samsung 740. Twice because after 45 days the microphone failed to transmit my voice to intended callers.
Summary: The Discovery 925 is great while it works but has proven to be unreliable even after troubleshooting wiht a customer service representative. The customer service representative was helpful with regards ...
Summary: The Discovery 925 is great while it works but has proven to be unreliable even after troubleshooting wiht a customer service representative. The customer service representative was helpful with regards to the Plantronics warranty exchange program. He has told me that I would receive another 925 in 3-5 days. Since I live in California, I wait with baited breath because, evidently, we can't drive and talk on a handset at the same time! Hopefully three times is a charm.

Summary: I have been through over 10 headsets in the past 2 years. I am always looking for a superior sounding, looking, and fitting device. Could this be the one? Well it sure is close. The noise reduction works very well, even while driving down the highway at over 60 clicks, with the radio quite loud, you can still make out the caller's voice with clarity. Wow!

Best yet hands down!
by davvas22 on December 2, 2008
Pros: Bottom line--other people can't tell I'm using a bluetooth. I also like the appearance. LIghtweight. No earloop. Good fit. Carrycase that charges. Large and sensitive answer button only requires one finger to push.
Cons: From my perspective, not as attractive and doesn't fit quite as well as Plantronics Discovery 665.

Summary: This is my fourth headset and I was about to give up on bluetooth after the first three (Jawbone 1, Motorola H700, and Plantronics Discovery 665). With all three of those, others complained about the sound (echos, wind-tunnel like noises). My wife refused to talk to me when I was using them. I have no issues with the 925! I have not tried walking in the wind, but I had no problems standing in the wind and talking while pumping gas. I use an LGVX8300 phone--I thnk that's helpful to know as people seem to have different experiences with the same headsets. I love the 925's answer button--it is large (the whole diamond on the side) and sensitive. I don't have to go looking for it and I can easily push it with one finger without hurting my ear. (The button on the jawbone and plantronics 665 were tiny and hard to push, so I'd have to hold it with two fingers then push it with a third so as to not smash it into my ear.) The fit is good (but not as good as that of the 665), coming with 3 different fittings that are uniquely adjustable to the shape of your ear. Like the 665, the 925 does not have an earloop which is a big deal to me as earloops interfere with sunglasses (and earloops are unattractive). (I found the jawbone difficult to put on, and like the motorola it always felt like it was going to fall off.) The volume on the 925 is great--it came preset on medium and I've never had to change it. The appearance is a little different but it's growing on me. (I really liked the look of the 665; I think the jawbone 1 looked bulky and my kids made fun of it.) I am thrilled to have found such a great headset, and I will now be buying another 925 for my wife for Christmas.

Summary: I have had this headset for a few weeks, using it everyday. the size is fantastic, the weight very light. the earbud is a soft silicon that fits very snug into your ear. I was a little concerned that it would fall off, but I have actually run with it on and had no problem with it. The incoming sound is crisp and clear, and people hearing me say it sounds like i am talking on a landline. I like the case with built in battery, as it doubles as a charger and carrying case. The button arrangement is fine with me, although I would have preferred a volume rocker switch. It comes with charger and USB connection, one of which I leave at work to charge unit. I have used it for 4 days without having to charge it, and it charges very quickly. Plantronics has been in this business a very long time, and this units shows there expertise in this technology. I tried the jawbone2 but found it hard to keep on my ear and people complained about not being able to hear me loudly. If you want a light, great fitting headset I would highly recommend it.

Summary: I was pretty excited when i saw this headset in the store. It looked really cool and i'd seen NO ONE with one. So i shelled out $130 for one (i know i know i MUST'VE been crazy). At any rate, initially I was VERY pleased with it. It was the most consistent headset I'd ever owned. Four weeks in however, it simply STOPPED working. I could hear callers but they couldnt hear me, I tried charging it, re-pairing it with my phone (I have a Samsung Instinct) nothing worked! I took it back and got another one. Within 3 weeks this one did the SAME THING! I returned it yet again and decided to just go with a Jawbone (not happy with that purchase either but that's a review for another time). I really liked the design of this earpiece and hate it didnt work out for me.
