Summary: They make our music listening experience either greater or lesser depending on their quality and sound. Headphones can make it or break it (quite literally). The AKG K181 DJ's represent the culmination of sound quality and functionality from a company producing a plethora of products that overtake the competition. This review will address all the necessary points before undertaking the procedure of buying these phones, including sound quality, comfort, functionality and all the technical blunder one could enjoy.
First of all we need to assess the sound quality of headphones before making a purchase. I deeply wanted to try these before splurging out the money and I wasn't completely sure what to buy at first. I had a friend who swears only by AKG and Audio Technica and had a pair of AKG K77's lying around. As soon as I tried them I knew I wanted AKG's. After going through their product line the K181's popped up and I had found my new phones. When I received them my jaw dropped and I was completely blown away by what I heard. The highs, mids and lows were accurately portrayed. One will notice the mids and the lows the very first time you try them on, being DJ phones these are emphasized rather then the highs. Do not get the impression that the highs are forgotten. Anyone getting these phones will really enjoy every single sound coming out of the earpieces. There is also the presence of a Bass Boost switch to increase the Mids and Lows even more. The difference is noticeable when switching between the Small Club and Large Club switch ( bass boost). The closed-back nature of these headphones make for good sound isolation and minimal leakage. There is the presence of a Stereo and Mono switch to monitor your music and provide some diversity for the K181's.
The K181's are very well padded and can be worn for long periods of time. I would say the first hour will not feel that great and you will notice a certain amount of clamping. All of this is normal and if you still are uncomfortable after lets say about 5 hours of use you may want to consider stretching the phones over a book for a night or so. The pads on the earpieces are replaceable and the stock ones provide ample comfort. With the 3D axis the earpieces will go any way to accommodate your listening. Overall the experience is comfy and they do a good job in isolating external noise.
In terms of functionality the K181's have it all. All the bells and whistles where incorporated into the design. First we find the Large and Small Club switch. As stated before this function increases the amount of low-end sound you want. There is a Stereo and Mono switch so that you can monitor your music while its plays. I don't think i'll be using this feature much but for those in the business its a must have. One of the often overlooked features is the removable cable. I once pulled out the cable on some cheap phones and didn't really care but with this investment I am more then content with this ability. Now frayed or ripped out cables are a thing of the past. Next is the 3D axis for movement and to make the phones fold flat. That's right fold flat. These monsters, will fit in the handy little carrying case that comes with them. Last and not least is the screw-on adapter to bring the 3.5mm standard jack to the bigger standard (I forget the exact number) .
closed-back, dynamic headphones, supraaural
5 Hz to 30,000 kHz
99.99% oxygen-free cable, 1.8 m (5.9 ft.)
280 g (9.9 oz.)
3D-Axis folding mechanism (Patent no. AT 414.198, JP 3.984.595, US 7,172,052, RU 2.282.954); 3D-Axis folding mechanism (Patent no. AT 413.923, RU 2.282.953, JP 3.984.594, US 7,072,483)
To end this in-depth review I would have to say the number of features, sound quality, AKG quality and the X number of other features account for more than enough reasons to buy the K181's. Hopefully this review has illuminated you to make the proper decision for buying some quality headphones. My greatest tip for all of you is to do your research and find the perfect phones for you. My second greatest tip would be to try out the phones before buying them and if none are available try others from the company. Naturally some of the audiophiles will barf all over this review and say this and that in relation to these phones. Just remember these are DJ phones and are very fun to listen. Thanks for reading. Practice and Enjoy.

Excellent headphones, the sound quality is amazing
by masbury on May 21, 2011
Pros: Great quality sound, highs meds and lows
Foldable - easily fit inside almost any case (it comes with a bag)
Two different cables are available, a straight cord or a longer coiled one, these headphones come with the straight cord
Cons: Your ears get kind of warm when you wear the headphones for over 30 minutes. It's acceptable but could be better.
The coiled cable is extra and costs around $25-30
Summary: I love these headphones, for their price they are a great value. I managed to get them under $120 and don't think I could get better for that price. ...
Summary: I love these headphones, for their price they are a great value. I managed to get them under $120 and don't think I could get better for that price. Overall, I'm very pleased with the headphones, I've had them for over 2 years and I haven't had a single problem. However, if there is a problem you get a 2 year warranty with the purchase. I am very happy to use these for the sound quality, the look, and the value.
Not so glorius
by Rosinante1 on September 17, 2008
Pros: sound good (not so powerfull at lows, but if necessary you can boost them)
Cons: axis foldable mechanism not so flexible like on similar phones by other manufacturer, mine headband got broke while I was playin and cost of repair is 130?, so think twice. Switching back to HD25... U can´t use bass boost for longer time.
Summary: think twice
