The good: The Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Professional Studio Monitor Headphones offer excellent build quality and very detailed, balanced sound with tight bass. They're also very comfortable and are a relative bargain.
The bad: There's no integrated microphone for making cell phone calls; the bulkier design makes them less suitable for mobile use; and the headphone cord isn't detachable.
The bottom line: The Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Professional Studio Monitor Headphones are among the best available for less than $200, offering excellent sound and build quality.

Summary: I've been absolutely blown away by these headphones since purchasing them a couple days ago. I listen to primarily electronic music (Electro House & Dubstep) and these headphones have allowed me to experience tracks that I was already familiar with, in a whole new light. You'll find that Bass response is crisp, accurate, and in no way overpowering (even at high volume levels). They are incredibly comfortable and the build quality is excellent. I'm having a very difficult time finding any faults with these, and if you're looking for "budget, audiophile-like headphones" - The ATH-M50's are the one to get.

Error in editor's review regarding the white model.
by tomwaitsfan on May 24, 2012
Pros: Everything. Fantastic sound, great build quality, good comfort. They will work fine without an amp, but they're even better with one. I use my FiiO E17 DAC/amp with them, and the extra power makes these cans shine even more.
Cons: It would be nice if the cord was detachable. It's not, but that's just a nit-pick.

Summary: There is an error in the editor's review. These headphones are available in white, but only with the shorter coiled cord. They are not available in white with the longer straight cord. I own the white version of these cans, and they look awesome, but the white ones are only available with the shorter coiled cord as of this writing.

Glad I bought them
by SweetTunesinNC on May 24, 2012
Pros: Very good sound stage, solid bass, high sensitivity so it doesn't need additional amplification
Cons: Heavy, makes your ears sweaty, not suited for extended listening, loooog, heavy cord(wish it detached and a shorter one could be added)

Summary: I already own pairs of Grado SR125 and the Klipsch Image S4 so I wanted to have a pair of closed, over the ear HPs. I think the AT sounds better than the Grados. Even though the Grados are open backed I found the ATs to have a more open, grander soundstage. Understandably, the bass is deep with the ATs and it plays plenty loud with my Touch so no amp needed.
What really surprised me is how well the Klipsch Image S4 held up to the ATs. I think the sound quality is on par, plays even louder, and is far more portable than the AT. So if you are on a budget and/or you don't find IEMs uncomfortable, I say go for the Klipsch instead. But ideally, own both!
I also purchased a pair of AKG 701s a few months ago. It had a beautiful, smooth, warm sound. It is sexy as hell, especially in white, super comfortable, and has a very high quality build. But I like a more dynamic sound, more bass, and it didn't play adequately loud enough with the Touch. Maybe I could have gotten there with an external, quality headphone amp but that would have exceeded my budget so I reluctantly returned them. -
Correction for CNET Review: They DO fold up
by k_mitchell on May 23, 2012
Pros: These are excellent headphones. They're built well, and I'm very satisfied with the quality I get from the price. Contrary to the CNET review, they do fold up as compactly as possible but it's not so intuitive how to do this.
Cons: I've had these only for 1 month, and haven't noticed much I didn't like. One small issue is a pressure point at the top of the head though, which limits listening to about 2 hours or less for me at one time.

Great pairs under $150
by dukepaladin on May 6, 2012
Pros: Good construction, ample bass, well balanced sound
Cons: tight cups may hurt your head after long use
Summary: For those who don't like the long cord of the straight version, you can do braid knot to shorten it.
