Summary: With its tight-grained mahogany ear cups, the DENON AH05000 is impressive out of the box, Soft faux leather promises an elegant, high-end piece of sterophile gear. On your ears, the D5000 is especially soft - which works well with the ultra-smooth cups.
Its sound is somewhat more controversial. Three things hit you right off: the thickly layered bass, an intriguing mix of sweet treble and forward mids - and more bass. Unlike the Sennheiser HD650'd deep, sexy, almost organic bass, Denon takes it to the extreme. For most, it's fine just as it is; fickle ears, like mine, require some EQ to reduce the bass quantity. It comes ever so close to bass-boom without stepping off the edge.
Once properly equalized (and broken in), the DK5000's sound shows more forward mids. There's surprisingly full sonic imaging on most tracks. You'll be able to discern immediatey whether a track is, say, 192khz MP3 or 320khz.
There's more volume to these headphones than you'd initially expect, and that efficiency translates into a headphone that works especially well with pop and rock. Classical is fine, but a more delicately voiced headphone like the AKG K701 will prove more satisfying on those tracks. But the Denon makes you notice more things about the mix, offering all sorts of surprises in well-mixed tuneage.
There's a cottage industry growing in finding ways to modify the D5000 to provide a more "even" tone. This may prove to be your route down the line. Overall, I prefer the K701, but use the Denon for electronic, pop, and rock.

Summary: I am a retired Physicist ,Avionics tech.,and a 40 year Stereo enthusiast. While I enjoy my Beyerdynamic DT-880's, these Denon's may be as good- or better. I was much disappointed by the AKG-K701's, with their incredably low efficiency and the 1950's hospital white and chrome plastic "space cadet" looking prescence. But the Denon's may be the best yet ,when someone has the courage to publish their frequency to db ratio's. Get back to you later.-Larry
