Grado SR60 price range: $79.00

The good: Retro-styled, over-the-ear model; sounds swell with portables; big bass; lively sonics.
The bad: Not the slickest-looking or most comfortable 'phones you can buy.
The bottom line: Grado's cheapest headphones belt out big sound with pint-size portable audio devices.
The SR60's earpieces have large cushions, but we're not about to claim that these headphones set a new standard for wearability. After spending a few hours with all that foam clamped over your ears, you'll need a break. If comfort is a concern, check out AKG's sleek K 101, which is less physically fatiguing. It's too bad that it sounds canned next to the wide-open SR60.
For listening on the go, the SR60 is our hands-down favorite among sub-$75 headphones, and it worked fine on our home system, too. For a mere $30 more, you can enjoy better bass and detail on Grado's SR80, which uses a slightly higher-quality cable and larger ear cushions. The SR60's cord is fitted with a gold-plated miniplug, and Grado supplies a gold-plated 1/4-inch adapter.
The SR60 stomps all over the pathetic little earbuds that come with iPods. After a one-minute comparison test, you'll never want to go back to that tinny and distorted sound. And here's more good news for owners of portable MP3 players: The SR60 is extremely efficient, so you'll be able to listen to your files at louder volumes than on other headphones.
The spunky Grado SR60 has attracted a fanatical following. Listen, and you'll know why.

Superb, but only for home listening

They do not isolate you from the outside world, however, and they do not isolate the outside world from your music at all. This makes them unsuitable for loud locations such as the bus or airplane, where you'll deafen yourself (and annoy the other passengers) if you turn the volume up far enough to listen to your music. They're also unsuitable for quiet locations such as the library, as the music you're listening to will be quite audible to those around you, even at moderate volumes.
For home use, though, and for the odd locations where it's not too loud outside and there aren't other people in close proximity, these headphones sound amazing. I'm glad that I own them.
Be prepared to adjust them yourself to make them comfortable (instructions included with the headphones, I believe). The headpiece gets much more comfortable once it has been squeezed to your head shape. Even after adjusting them, these aren't the world's most comfortable headphones.

Perfect for MP3's and private listening.
Pros: Sounds great with ipod and laptop--makes MP3's sound fuller and more nuanced than I thought possible.
Cons: Leak so much sound that everyone within 15 feet will get to enjoy the music too--really not useful with portables for this reason.

Excellent headphones and nice people
Pros: In addition to the great sound that you'll hear about, their customer service is amazing. I never filled out my warranty card, but when I, probably through rough use, bent my miniplug slightly, they fixed it for free, and even sent back the 5 dollars I'd
Cons: Well, there are more comfortable headphones out there, but these are still pretty nice.

Summary: I'm no audio-phile but the sound is very good. From what I can tell the headphones are made with top quality components and craftsmanship. On the other hand the design is from the 1950's and it doesn't seem like it would take much effort for Grado to get in the 21st century in this regard

Great sound but fragile

Unfortunately when playing (electric) guitar at home the headphones couldn't hold up and started to crackle at seemingly very low thresholds. With no real use for them at home they have lived in the office since then.
In the office I felt these headphones were worth their weight in gold. They had great sound and was also open enough that I could hear people if they called for me.
My only real complaint is that after ~1 year one of the cups had wiggled its way off the metal post. For the next few months I would simply wiggle it back on (sometimes with a spot of glue - a feel good measure at best) but ultimately the plastic on the cup was stripped/widened to the point of no return.
Overall they held up ok for the amount of use they saw but I really would have thought they'd be more soundly built especially from Grado.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Great product for listening to music at home or work. Doesn't keep outside noise out, though. And everyone can hear what you hear, so it's not the best time to bring out your Spice World movie sound track. I don't know why everyone thinks they look goofy, because they look freakin' pro. They have that raw functional apeal. And they totally deliver.

Summary: I was very happy with these headphones when I bought them. I think that they are the best headphones that I have owned, (and I have owned dozens of them).
The build quality is second to none, beating the Skullcandy headphones that I have owned. I liked the fact that they have more metal in them than plastic.
I was also happy that they are an american company making an american product. They are true audiophile headphones.
While the initial price was a little of a splurge, they were very worth it.
I just wish that I had them today.... :-(

Possibly the best value for any audio gear!
by brianlakeman on October 24, 2008
Pros: Superb sound quality across the spectrum.
Quality construction.
Great value.
Cord with plenty of length.Cons: Not the most comfortable for long periods.

Summary: Like the title says, I think these SR60's are an excellent value. They absolutely blow away the $40 Sony's I have. I mean not even close. It's like listening to an entirely different song with these on. Ok, maybe they're not super comfortable for long periods, and have styling and packaging circa 1974. However, in the "high end" headphone arena, these are almost unbeatable. And did I mention the great value? I can't over state the value, really. You could spend double or triple and not have as great a sound. Believe, I've been there.
I highly recommend these for anyone looking to not spend a fortune on a great set of headphones. Sure, if you a grand to blow on headphones, you could find better. But me, I set my limit at $100 and wasn't disappointed. Believe me, you won't be either. -
Pretty good, but be careful with your volume...

Summary: These are good headphones, great if you never want to listen to music louder than your mother would like. However, I found that with an iPod you can cause a clicking to develop, along with a buzz. I never max out my iPod's volume, but at around 60%-80%, after about a week, I could hear a buzz on the left. A couple weeks later, after turning it down, I started to hear a clicking on the right. While many say these are good headphones for volume, my experience has told me otherwise. Still good, though, for quieter areas where you can listen to music at lover volumes.
