JVC HA-NC100 Noise Canceling Headphones price range: $43.97 - $79.99

The good: The JVC HA-NC100 Noise Canceling Headphones are inexpensive and feature comfortable ear cups, a convenient fold-up design, an autoretracting 5-foot cord, and solid sound quality. They also include a carrying case and an airplane adapter.
The bad: The noise-cancellation feature of the JVC HA-NC100 Noise Canceling Headphones affects only lower frequencies, plus the headphones are a bit weak on bass.
The bottom line: The cushy JVC HA-NC100 Noise Canceling headphones don't block out ambient noise entirely, but they do a good job of reducing it--and for an affordable price.
JVC's HA-NC100 Noise Canceling Headphones have the substantial look and feel of pricier models, with large, thickly padded ear cups and a heavy-duty plastic frame. A single AAA battery--good for 50 hours, according to JVC--installs in one of the ear cups; the other houses a retractable 5-foot cord, which rewinds automatically with the push of a switch. How cool is that?
Equally impressive, the JVC HA-NC100 folds up to become a far more compact travel accessory than you'd expect from full-size headphones. JVC also supplies a drawstring leather carrying case and a two-prong airplane adapter.

The JVC HA-NC100 combines passive noise reduction--the padded cups that cover your ears--with active circuitry designed to block low-frequency noise, such as the hum of a train or the deep roar of a jet engine. It's an effective one-two punch, though the result is definitely noise reduction, not complete cancellation. If you're sitting in a crowded airport lounge, don't expect much dampening; the noise there is largely mid- to high range. But the active circuit does a commendable job with the low-end stuff, making public-transportation environments seem considerably quieter.
As for the headphones themselves, we found sound quality to be decent overall. Bass response seemed a little weak, and during quiet music passages, we could occasionally detect a bit of the hiss produced by the active circuit, though only in the right ear. In passive mode, this hiss was eliminated, improving the overall listening experience a bit. Audiophiles may find the JVC HA-NC100 Noise Canceling Headphones wanting, but for everyone else, it's an almost unbeatable deal.

I love these phones.

Summary: I love the sound of these headphones. I can't help wondering if other users who have posted here are confused about the product or possibly had a defective unit because the noise canceling on mine is super. I say this after using them on my last trip to Europe. Best flight ever, and you may actually be able to enjoy the inflight movie with these beauties (JVC very kindly provides an airplane adaptor).
The sound is so nice that I find myself hearing things in music that I had not heard before. Great depth and range.
I know there are better phones out there if you want to spend double the money, but for 50 to 60 clams, these are super.
As if that weren't enough, the cord retracts into the left can so that you never have to wind it or deal with dangling excess. That you only have the cord you need means that these are better than wireless because you don't have to compromise sound quality to get the cord out of the way.
A note to CNET... the photo you have for this product is NOT the HA NC100 phones. You guys might want to look into that.
While the cans are comfortably padded, the head piece is not. I've got a thick head of hair and so do not experience any discomfort, however, if you are not so equipped, you might not like the feel of bare plastic against your noggin.
They fold down smaller than you might think and my Rio Carbon stores perfectly between the padded cans and into the handy dandy drawstring bag my entire music system goes.17 out of 17 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I've had the opportunity to compare these headphones against the Bose QuietComfort2 headphones. I must admit that the Bose are somewhat more effective, but nowhere near 4x as effective to justify 4x the price.
I typically travel at least two trips every month, and the JVCs have become an important part of those trips. I plug them into my laptop, turn on the noise cancelling, and turn on a movie. Then I have a comfortable and effective mini-theater. It works so well that the flight attendents have to shake me back to reality to offer me a drink, because I don't hear them talking to me.
Some background noise still leaks through, but the headphones work so well that I'm listening to the movies or music at a much more comfortable level. Also, the padding on the ears is very soft and very comfortable.
My opinion is that this is one of the best travel-specific buys that I've made in some time.10 out of 10 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I bought the JVC HA-NC100's for a a round trip from Japan to the US in December '06. I put them through a "real test" on the 10.5 hour flight going to the US and the 13.5hr flight returing to Japan. They sound great and I was impressed with the noise canceling feature. It blocked out much of the roar you hear inside a plane. The noise canceling feature can be turned on or off and uses a AAA battery. If your battery dies you can still listen to music. If your battery dies on a Bose QC2 and you don't have a replacement you're out of luck - no music. The bass was fine for my taste, but if you like extra heavy bass you may want to adjust your equalizer or upgrade to a different model. They fold up very nice and compact and have an included case which is useful while traveling. The headphones were comfortable but I found myself readjusting them to give my ears a break on the long flight. The retractable cord is a very interesting feature that neatly winds up your cord when it works correctly. I noticed a slight clicking sound on the left can that is the housing for the cord. The occasional sound can become annoying if you listen closely. After less than 2 weeks of owning these JVC's the retractable cord stopped working all together and I returned them. In conclusion... if you want a low priced ($80) great sounding noise canceler without the price of a Bose you'll enjoy the JVC HA-NC100.

Good headphones for the price.
Pros: Cord winds up into unit. Has passive noise cancelling, but I don't know how it compares to higer end models like the Bose. You can still use the headphones if the battery dies. Comes with an adapter for airline use and a carrying case. Would recommend t
Cons: The cord seems a little small compared to other headphones, but the sound quality for its price range is still pretty good.

Summary: The earphones sound great though they can be a bit tight around your ears. The sound is great untill you throw the noise cancellation switch. The phones emit a low hiss which does absolutely nothing to either enhance the quality of sound or cut ambient noise. If you are looking for a noise cancellation headphones, this is not it. If you are looking for a simple headphone, foldable and all, there are other cheaper choices. I returned mine to J&R and upgraded to a Bose Triport.

3. They are not as comfortable, because there is more pressure around the ear.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I bought a pair of these otherwise excellent headphones for my son to use when we took a trip to Seattle. Being only 3 years old I figured it would be in his own best interest to reduce noise as much as possible. He agreed once we boarded the airplane. On our return trip I noticed that one of the ear cup pads had fallen off. I contacted JVC as it would be immoral to return the headphones to the retailer as defective. In hind sight I should have done exactly that. JVC customer service was completely unwilling to send a replacement pad and suggested that I should buy another pair of headphones. I will not be buying JVC audio equipment in the future.

Summary: Before you read this remember noise canceling doesn't cut out all noises like talking, just white noise like the roar of an airplane engine. The noise canceling feature works well. however when there is not much to cancel out and no music is playing you can hear a hiss in the right speaker. It has good battery life 50+ hours on one AAA battery. Retractable cord hasn't tangled on me. Another nice thing is that you can still listen to music when noise canceling is off. These headphones have good sound quality with the help of a bass booster. The ear pads are small but even though i have big ears, it doesn't seem to bother me even for long periods of time. The only discomfort is the joint on the top of the headphones. it presses on my head. but as i am writing this now i start to feel it less and less. On the airplane this helped me sleep and overall i am happy with these. If you can find this for 50- then i say this is a good buy.
