The good: The JVC HA-NCX77 headphones offer impressive bass response for earbuds, and the noise-canceling unit has a built-in clip for convenient stowage on your person. The 'buds are inexpensive and come with desirable extras, such as a versatile case and an airplane plug adapter. The easy-to-open packaging doesn't leave your hands bleeding and scarred.
The bad: The HA-NCX77's noise-canceling unit is bulky and the headphones can't be disconnected from it.
The bottom line: The JVC HA-NCX77 Noise Canceling Earbuds inspire little complaint. Good sound quality, useful extras, and a relatively low price point make them a fine option for commuters and frequent fliers.

Thou gettest what thou payest for...

Pros: noise cancelling effective, fits nicely in ear, unit small and light

Summary: Ear buds usually suffer from insufficient bass output. Not these: here you get a cavernous, booming bass with next to no high frequency output. Even boosting highs and un-boosting lows with a user-controlled equalizer doesn't do much; the trebble is still paper thin. Shame, because the noise-cancellation does work quite well, I can tell a substantial difference in road racket with and without the unit activated. Alas, sound quality is sub-par. I guess maybe that is the reason for the relatively low price.
Updated
Since the original opinion I've tested this product with the iPod Nano (2G). When setting equalization to "Treble Booster" the sound was better than with any manual EQ I tried, using other players. The treble is still somewhat subdued but decent enough. I am sure the same will hold true using the iPod 5G. Thus I "upgrade" my previous rating from 4 to 6.Updated
Since my original Opinion I tried this product with a 2G iPod Nano. When setting equalization to "Treble Booster" I experienced improved treble - considerably better than with all the manual EQ settings I experimented with, using a variety of players. I am sure this "discovery" also holds true for the 5G iPod (and, perhaps, for other players). The high frequency is still a bit "thin" but acceptable even for long listening. I therefore "upgrade" my original rating from 4 to 6.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Obviously the reviewer never tried these on an airplane. The United Airlines provided noise cancelling earphones clearly cut background noise, these did nothing. Other than the sound isolating properties of the earbuds, there was no difference in sound whether the noise cancelling was on or off. I would rate them higher if they were not billed as active noise cancelling earbuds.

Summary: As others have observed, I too was left wondering if I'd purchased a duff set! Ear plugs fit comfortably and snug. By virtue of having them in your ears a lot of noise is cut out. However, with no music playing the difference between having the noise cancellation on and off is virtually indistinguishable. If anything there is more white noise when turned on than off! I only paid $12 for them as they were in the bargain bin where, I should have left them! Disappointing from JVC frankly.

Great Sound Quality, Adequate Noise Cancellation.
by burgsprinta on January 25, 2010
Pros: These little earbuds sound surprisingly good, with great bass and highs. Since these were discontinued you can find them for a great price. The noise cancellation is great, even the passive cancellation is pretty good.
Cons: The ear bud tips that the unit came with were terrible. After switching to Sony replacement tips, I got a much better fit, better noise cancellation, and better bass. Definitely worth the $5 or i paid for the Sony tips.
Summary: Great product for a great price, Excellent sound, good noise cancellation. If you get these, I would definitely recommend replacing the included tips with better ones. I gave them 4....

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT !
by tddunn_cox_net on September 9, 2009
Pros: I'd like to say something positive, but cannot.
Cons: The noise cancelling feature is wholly ineffective.
It is advertised as up to 80% effective...while in America - I guess you could say I could only hear 80 percent of all noise on the entire planet.Summary: These will be worth the cost when the price drops to two dollars with free shipping included.

Poor noise reduction
by JoeGoose on July 28, 2009
Pros: Ear buds work OK, unit is relatively light even with the battery
Cons: I would have to agree with most of the other reviewers in that I could not discern any active noise reduction at all. Sound quality is a bit tinny, but since I mostly use my MP3 for podcasts, that is OK.

Summary: I had hoped to use these at the health club on the treadmills to reduce the background noise. I agree with one of the other reviewers that they just won't work in that kind of environment. These may work acceptably in other environments, say, in an airplane, but for the purpose I had intended, they just do not fit the bill. I have tried a friend's Bose noise reducing head phones and they work very acceptably. I was hoping that although these might not be expected to produce the same results as the much higher priced Bose, they would provide at least a moderate degree of active noise reduction. Unfortunately that is not the case. I really do wonder if I just got a defective product--I just simply am unable to detect any noise reduction at all in any environment that I have tried.

How can JVC sell something like this???
by armin1us on April 27, 2009
Pros: The rubber ear pads are nice. They fit comfortably, and they offer s o m e - but not much - passive noise cancelling
Cons: Unacceptable low sound quality - which is atypical for JVC products - and no discernable a c t i v e noise cancelling at all.
Summary: The sound of the music is seriously lacking in volume, particularly in the lower, bass frequencies. I have compared this unit with the regular earphones that came with my inexpensive ...
Summary: The sound of the music is seriously lacking in volume, particularly in the lower, bass frequencies. I have compared this unit with the regular earphones that came with my inexpensive mp3 player from Radio Shack ($14 for mp3 player INCLUDING the earphones), and the JVC HA-NCX77 does not even come close.
I have tried using the JVC HA-NCX77 with soft - and with loud background noise in several different frequency ranges, and there is no active noise cancellation noticable. I have bought many other JVC products for many years. I was usually satisfied, and I bought these earphones largely because they came from JVC. Unfortunately, I must return them to the seller, because they are not useful, and I would not recommend them to anyone. -

The reviewer for cnet must not have used these in a noisy enviroment
by Montana111 on April 17, 2008
Pros: Unfortunately, I could not find any redeeming features to warrant purchasing these headphones
Cons: The noise cancelling feature is mediocre to non-existant. The earbuds do not stay in place in the ear canal, and the sound quality is muted and does not give the full range of sound.
Summary: If you buy these you will be very disappointed in several aspects from sound quality to noise suppression. You must also be very still in order to keep the earbuds ...
Summary: If you buy these you will be very disappointed in several aspects from sound quality to noise suppression. You must also be very still in order to keep the earbuds in place and will have to constantly readjust the positioning.

Specifications
- Manufacturer: JVC
- Part number: HA-NCX77
- Description: JVC's first in-ear style noise canceling headphones HANCX77 reflect JVC's commitment to style and technology. It cancels up to amazing 80% (more than 14dB at 120Hz) of the background noise, and also the unique contoured canal design features an earpiece that's slightly angled, allowing a natural and secure fit that provides maximum sound isolation. Because of the superb ambient noise seal, precise acoustic coupling to the eardrum can be employed, thereby lowering the volume required to achieve the full sonic impact. The HANCX77 also features monitor function that allows users to mute the sound for conversation or listening to announcements.
