The good: Monster Beats by Dr. Dre Tour In-Ear Headphones feature a unique and stylish design, and the cable seems more durable than that of most earbuds.
The bad: Monster Beats by Dr. Dre Tour In-Ear Headphones have extra long earpieces that may not be comfortable for all users, and they don't offer much in the way of sound isolation.
The bottom line: The Monster Beats by Dr. Dre Tour In-Ear Headphones offer much in the way of style and sound, but the extra-long earpieces my cause comfort and fit issues for some users.
Fashion-forward designs have recently been making quite a bit of headway in the headphone space. It doesn't take much effort to find a pair that matches your MP3 player or can be coordinated by outfit, although manufacturers with true eyes for design take things a step further. Take Monster Cable's Beats by Dr. Dre Headphones, a super stylish set of cans announced at CES 2008. The company is now adding to the fashionable line with the Tour In-Ear Headphones, an ultraportable set that sports the signature red and black coloring. This $150 pair once again proves that hip hop-branded headphones won't necessarily offer an overwhelming low-end response, and also leads us to believe Dr. Dre may have the deepest ear canals known to man.
The Monster Beats by Dr. Dre Tour In-Ear Headphones have perhaps the longest earpieces we've ever seen. The 'buds measure a full inch from end to end, and half of that length is made up of the arms that hold the eartips. Half an inch isn't that long for most gadgets, but the scale is considerably altered when you have to stick the gadget into your ear. As a result, fit can be an issue. Although Monster includes five sets of silicone eartips (three sizes of standard and two sizes of triple flange), we found the Tour earphones to be fairly uncomfortable and could never really get a secure fit. Plus, the ends of the 'buds tend to stick out pretty far from the head.
Of course, fit is highly personal. One could make that argument for style, too, but there's no denying that the Tour earphones will add quite a bit of flair to your listening setup. The entire design is unique, from the flattened, disc-shaped earbuds--decked out in the signature lowercase "b" logo--to the red ribbon of a cable. The cord, which terminates in a gold-plated straight plug, is like few we've seen; flat and thick, it appears to be more durable than most earbud cables--definitely a plus. Monster also includes a hard-sided zippered case for storing and protecting your investment when it's not in use.
The Beats by Dr. Dre Tour In-Ear Headphones may not present an overwhelming low-end, but bass is not lacking and it's nice and tight. As with their full-size siblings, these 'phones offer an impressively crisp high end with good detail. If anything, music tends to sound a bit cold for our liking, with the 'phones slightly lacking in the rich and buttery mids that add the desired warmth. However, we were generally impressed with the clear and balanced audio response during testing, though a few songs could sound harsh. Hip hop, electronic, and pop are genres that shine, and even classical sounds good. If you can get a good fit and want the most stylish earbuds you can get your hands on, the Tour In-Ear Headphones are a worthwhile option.

Everything I was hoping for!

Pros: Amazing clarity, deep/punchy bass, great looks. Unique design. Street cred (JK)

Summary: I wanted these headphones as soon as I saw them.. I'm a fan of the Studio beats, and always wished they'd release an earbud of equal quality. These aren't as good as the $350 studio version, but come closer than I expected. The overall sound is amazing. Bass is big. It doesn't feel like a subwoofer in your ear, but they do go deep. I can't stop going through my library of old songs to re-hear them. It truly does make your music sound different like I've read people say. I listen to mostly hip-hop, these are geared perfectly for that sound. T.I.'s Top Back, Lil Wayne "A Milli" are both good demo songs for the ability of these. That type of bass is where these headphones go off.
I was really worried about the fit issues I've read from other reviews including the one here on Cnet. They fit fine for me, nothing to complain about WHATSOEVER... They are a bit long, but it's long on purpose. These are flashy, no doubt. The flat disc part with the b logo does sit futher out than other earbuds. I think that is intentional, people who buy these want them to be seen. That piece is extremely light, it feels hollow, so it doesn't feel like it's pulling out or anything. I've found them to be completely secure in my ears. It's a non-issue. I've played basketball, ran on a treadmill, not once have I felt the seal break, or have to re-adjust them.
On a side note I did experiment with the triple layer tips, those are garbage in my opinion. They don't work with my ears at all.
The cord is really cool, looks a bit different in person than in pictures. It's narrower than I pictured. It's flat of course, and has a solid feel. The cord has some weight too it, not too heavy, it simply feels like it's of quality. I haven't found the weight to be an issue at all, and it hasn't tangled up yet. I've tossed these in my gym bag, bunched them up in a ball, done various other things to see if the "tangle free" is true. Like I said, so far so good there.
Overall, these headphones are great. I was a little hesitant to spend $150 on this, but I'm happy I did. Let's just say, they are good enough for me to write this review, I have never done this.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great Sound but not durable
by colts187 on October 26, 2009
Pros: Great sound especially in the high range. First earbuds I have ever owned where you can actually feel the bass in your ears
Cons: The cord seems durable but if you carry it in your pocket much the cord will tear apart They also tangle very badly. A few weeks into it they tangle very badly and it adds to the fact that the rubber overlay tears apart at the end towards the plug.
Summary: Incredible sound but not very durable if you want to keep your player in your pocket. It will tear up and that is incredibly depressing when you spend $150 on ...

I'd rather use my stock earphones than these...
by GoonV on September 22, 2009
Pros: Cool looking design. Red wires. Sound can sometimes be clear, depending on what music.
Cons: Poor fit. Earbuds were very uncomfortable to put in your ear. There was some bass, but I don't think it was clear. I think the higher notes were lost. Vocals were drowned out and almost non-existant at times.
Summary: I would rather listen to the stock Ipod earphones than these. There is some bass, but it drowns out the vocals. Drums sound like some one smacking on cans instead ...
Summary: I would rather listen to the stock Ipod earphones than these. There is some bass, but it drowns out the vocals. Drums sound like some one smacking on cans instead of what they're supposed to sound like. Vocals were drowned out and at times I couldn't even hear the anything but the guitar or the damn symbols on the drums. I wish I never bought these and I'm returning them tomorrow morning ASAP. I also bought the Shure $100 and $150 earphones and returned them as well as there was little bass and I'd rather use cheaper earphones and get similar quality music. I also tried the altec backbeats, I liked them better than the Monster earphones, but still not worth it. The only pair I like and will buy again are the Bose earbuds. Mine were stolen, so I tried other headphones, nothing can compare to the sound I got from them. The only flaw is they are hard to keep in your ears at times, but it's really not that much of an inconvenience as uncomfortable earbuds.

Summary: I have had everything from skullcandy (various), vmoda, apple premium, sony's phonetopia, bose in ear and triports, Sennheiser cx, and sure E4c, Zune premium headshet, but none of these have match the type of music I listen to.
Alhtough the reason I bought these headphones wast the styling the sound is what made me keep them. I know alot people that complained about the fit but you have plenty of options to find the perfect fit (it took me close to 30 mins to find the right fit). When I first open the box I knew that these are not your typical headphones but once I tried them on I realized the sound was good but the fit was off but after about 30 mins of trying diffrent fittings (I ended up using a combo of diffrent sizes) I was very pleased.
My goal is to get a pair of Ultimate Ears UE-10 Pro but for the time beign these are a great pair of stand-ins.
Type of music I listen to: Hip-Hop, R&B, Jazz and Punk Rock. -
Excellent sound BUT tragically uncomfortable design.
by shrocra on September 2, 2009
Pros: The sound reproduction/quality is excellent, as promised. The eye-catching red and black design, the all-metal construction, stylish case and easily untangled cord are great ideas.
Cons: To be in discomfort while experiencing great sound quality is a terrible dilemma. They fit poorly, and the size options don't work because it's the design of the metal piece that's poorly done. EVERY time I used them they fell out, even while sitting
Summary: At first I was hopeful I had just not learned some trick, because the sound quality is great. However, I was disappointed every time. I ended up adjusting the earpieces ...
Summary: At first I was hopeful I had just not learned some trick, because the sound quality is great. However, I was disappointed every time. I ended up adjusting the earpieces frequently (more than once a song), tried every set of inhibitors, tried resting them in my ear canal instead of pushing them down further. I switched ears, tried not moving or exercising. The metal piece is too heavy, too far away from the resting point in the ear canal, so the piece ends up moving around. So then, the sound becomes distant, or the earpiece just falls right out of your ear. Seriously? for $150? I've never had this problem with headphones before, I don't have abnormally sized ear canals or anything.
I wish there was a way to try them on, because I would not have spent the money, despite the sound quality. I hope they reconsider their design, I would be willing to try again if Dre's team overhauls the construction/design. I usually stick with Sennheiser, and will be going back. Monster Beats by Dr Dre Tour headphones were unfortunately not the reliable investment I was hoping for. -
Great sound/ great looks once you adjust the fit.
by rumblez3 on August 25, 2009
Pros: The sound from these headphones are great - clear, crisp and they offer a good range of base. On an ipod, set the equalizer to off and let the music and headphones do the work. They look and feel like a quality build.
Cons: The sound isolation could be a bit better, but more than adequate for a loud plane ride.

Amazing sound....once you get the right fit.
by merrillmm on August 21, 2009
Pros: These headphones sound amazing. Way better than my previous Bose in-ear buds. Low end response is great once you can get the fit right. And when they're sealed you can't hear anything but the AMAZING sound.
Cons: The fit is tough to achieve and if you are doing anything physical, is hard to maintain. The sound is hard to beat once you have the right fit, but it does take some effort.
Summary: These headphones definitely have the best sound out there, but only after making sure the fit is perfect. When I first tried them I was majorly disappointed, but after trying ...
Summary: These headphones definitely have the best sound out there, but only after making sure the fit is perfect. When I first tried them I was majorly disappointed, but after trying the triple flange earpeice I found the right fit for my ears and the sound was incomparable for in-ear headphones. They will sound amazing if you press any of the earpieces in, but only the perfect fit will maintain the sound after removing your fingers. If you're on the fence...buy em, try em and if they don't work for you, send them back. I love them...my girlfriend hates them.

Disappointed with sound, durability, earbuds and cord.
by beerme2009 on August 20, 2009
Pros: Sound is better than the out-of-the-box ipod earphones, but the sound quality is not worth price in my opinion.
Cons: Although they provide several size earbuds, I can't find one that stays inserted. Cord is too long. While running, my elbow hits it and pulls out the cord. So now, the copper wires on the cord near the piece that plugs into the ipod are exposed.
Summary: As a result of the exposed copper wires, above-average but not superior sound and the poor fit, I'll soon be back in the market for some earphones, just 4-months ...
Summary: As a result of the exposed copper wires, above-average but not superior sound and the poor fit, I'll soon be back in the market for some earphones, just 4-months after buying these. There's no way that I'd buy these again or recommend that you do either.

- Manufacturer: Monster Cable
- Part number: MH-BEATS-IE
- Description: The Beats Tour flat cable design is so revolutionary it's patent-pending. The Duraflex cable jacket is tough yet remains flexible while the flat profile virtually eliminates annoying tangles and snarls. With Beats Tour, you'll spend less time untying knots, and more time enjoying your music. Now, Monster is proud to unveil Beats Tour featuring Monster's driver design. Because the ultra-fast response time, the Beats Tour driver can accurately reproduce the full sound and details of today's digital music with precise clarity, natural vocals, and big bass punch. Most in-ear headphones simply cut off the low end of your music because they simply can't reproduce low audio frequencies. It took well over three years to develop and fine-tune the technology that makes Beats Tour bass so big, you'll think Monster puts a subwoofer in your head. Dr. Dre would have it no other way. Beats Tour in-ear noise isolation cuts external noise for a better music experience than traditional earbuds. Beats Tour includes five pairs of earbud tips: three pairs of cone tips and two pairs of triple-layered tips for the most comfortable, secure fit that isolates you from unwanted external noise. With Beats Tour, you'll hear everything no matter how loud the rest of the world is. Most earphones don't have the power to play music at the volume some music lovers like Monster prefer. The large high-efficiency drivers and magnetic technology have been custom engineered to play loud without distortion so you can hear every note. Beats Tour delivers power and clarity that reveals the emotion in your music. The sound check feature on your iPod balances playback levels so all your music tracks play at a consistent volume. But if the volume difference between tracks is large enough, ordinary earbuds may not play tracks with sound check loud enough. Beats Tour drivers were engineered so you have all the power you need to rock out even with sound check on. At Monster, they know cable. The Beats Tour cable features Monster's patented magnetic flux tube and Micro-strand construction to provide clear no-loss audio and reduced interference.
