Shure SE535 (Metallic Bronze) price range: $438.95 - $499.99

The good: The Shure SE535 headphones offer exceptional clarity; deep, tight bass; rich, enveloping sound; and great noise isolation. They are also relatively comfortable and include some useful extras such as an in-line volume control and an airplane adapter.
The bad: The Shure SE535s are expensive, and the earbuds are on the large side.
The bottom line: Anyone looking for ultracompact headphones with top-notch sound quality should consider the Shure SE530 Sound Isolating Earphones. This set will cost you a pretty penny, but it'll be worth it.
Shure has been churning out impressive-sounding in-ear headphones for consumers for more than 15 years, and any new models from the company have featured mainly evolutionary changes from their predecessors. The latest update to the Shure consumer line is no exception, with the new SE models featuring a few fairly minor--but mostly welcome--tweaks.
At the very top of the line, we have the Shure SE535. This $499 follow-up to the SE530 is definitely a luxury item, but anyone looking for stellar audio quality in a compact package should consider this investment.
Unlike the rest of the SE line, the earpieces of the SE535 are similar in design to those of its predecessor. In fact, the SE530 is where Shure originally implemented the contoured mold that's meant to sit inside the outer ear. The good news is the company did make some tweaks where it counts: the earbuds are now noticeably slimmer, which should help more users get a more comfortable and secure fit. That being said, the overall size of the SE535 earpieces is still large when compared with other in-ear models, so these won't work for everyone.
Due to the contoured earpiece shape of the Shure SE535 earphones, the earbuds need to be twisted in just right, with the cable then being looped over the top of the ear. Shure has built in a few inches of memory wire right near the earbuds to help with this. Still, not everyone will like the feel of the cord over the top of the ear, and the initial tweaking to get the earpieces just right is tiresome at first; practice helps over time.
As for the cable, Shure provides plenty of length: 64 inches, to be exact. However, those who had a pair of SE530s might be disappointed to learn that the design is no longer modular. That is, you can't split the cable at the Y-junction in order to make a shortened length for a player clipped to a lapel or worn in a shirt pocket. This is a bit of a bummer, because the cord is quite heavy and tends to pull at the earpieces with the entire length hanging free.
That being said, we appreciate the thickness and flexibility of the cable of the SE535; it speaks well to the headphones withstanding the test of time. Plus, the Y-junction and L-plug housings are extra rugged, and Shure now reinforces the wire with Kevlar. Add to that a two-year warranty and the fact that the earpieces are detachable, and you have a setup that practically screams "durability."
As for extras, the SE535 earphones include the usual suspects. You get a hard-sided, zippered carrying case, an earwax-cleaning tool, an in-line volume attachment, and a quarter-inch adapter. Plus, there's Shure's standard fit kit with three sizes (S, M, L) of the flex and black foam sleeves as well as one pair of triple-flange and one pair of universal-fit yellow foam sleeves.
Of course, sound quality is doubtless the chief concern for a pair of earphones costing half a grand, and the SE535s don't disappoint in this department. Indeed, audio is the star of the show here--it's stellar, through and through. This isn't entirely surprising, given that these earphones feature the same impressive internal technology found in the S530s. The earpieces cram in Triple High-Definition MicroDrivers, which means that each one has a dedicated tweeter and dual woofers.
These 'buds definitely live up to their lofty price point. In fact, our listening tests inspired frequent bouts of desk dancing, much to the amusement of neighboring editors. The Shure SE530s sound fantastic, but where to begin? First, the 'buds offer excellent passive-noise isolation, assuming you achieve a proper seal with the ear, which shouldn't be a problem given the aforementioned array of fittings. The seal also allows for deep, tight bass response--it's enveloping without being overwhelming, and there's no distortion. The highs are sparkly, and music overall has impressive clarity--even during frantic hard rock riffs, we could pick out the varying sounds. Detail is certainly not lost to these 'phones, either.
With headphones that offer such exceptional audio quality, it's tough--if not impossible--to decipher which genres really shine. Everything sounds good, but techno, hip hop, electronic, and dance perform phenomenally (no doubt thanks to the four woofers). During Robert Miles' "In My Dreams," we were transported, surrounded by speakers. Of course--with any earbuds--you're not going to get sound as open as with full-size headphones or external speakers, but the Shure SE530s do an admirable job of opening the experience.

Overall, great sound but high static when using gym.
by gatorgig on July 16, 2011
Pros: quality sound
Cons: too much static related problems and no easy way to find a repair shop to fix them.
Summary: Static problems overweigh the sound quality issue. No easy fix, at least i never found one.

Great sound... when static isn't an issue!
by mjkinnyc on July 11, 2011
Pros: Terrific lows and highs, excellent sound isolation, great fit.
Cons: I use these to exercise (run, weights) and the cable connection is a major issue. I have both the original clear cable as well as the iPhone cable and both have serious static issues, making this model unusable, after just a few months of standard wear (
Summary: I guess if you want to wear these for day-to-day activities in which you are sitting still and not particularly active, they're decent. But then you might as well ...

Shure Approaches Perfection (Professionals beware)
by theSmanisback on June 28, 2011

Cons: Case doesn't have a cord manager, naturally price, not the most accurate sound, earphone body may be too large for people with small ear antitragus

Summary: These earphones are truly a work of art. The detail throughout the entire audible spectrum is impeccable. Crystal clear treble, warm mids, and deep natural bass. The bass was a little strange at first; I am used to only hearing top of the line subwoofers reach these notes, and hearing them without feeling the rumble was alien. Also the sound isolating is very impressive. I haven't taken them on a plane yet, but have had a few fly over my head while wearing the earphones. When the planes were overhead, I could barely detect engine roar with the volume turned down. When the volume was raised to a moderate listening level, the jets were not at all audible. If you have the budget for these, you will not be disappointed.
One important note for professionals: If you are looking at these to edit videos/songs you may want to consider the SE425 instead. The 535s are incredible earphones; but due to their extra miniwoofer, the sound is a little warm colored. for critical listening, I've heard the 425s are extremely accurate. The 535s are simply modified 425s to produce a more enjoyable listening experience.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Connectors are junk, poor customer support

Summary: Tried to reconnect the left bud several times and still had a bad connection that was also a little loose since receiving them 4 months ago. Finally lost the left bud. Be careful if these are for daily use. Mine were basically for air travel( about 6 flights a month). Poor response from Shure and wasn't even given the option to buy just a single replacement bud. Look elsewhere and forget the quick disconnects which were invented because they couldn't produce quality wires for their buds.

exceptional sound..more comfortable than previous model
by kwandocoelli on December 31, 2010
Pros: well balanced and detailed, clear sound
smaller in size; better fit than the predecessor (SE530)
detachable/replacable cable
good noise-cancellingCons: although they made improvement, it is not the most comfortable
Summary: I am a serious classical musician and I recommend this product without hesitation.

The sound is unbeatable. I contently use it to listen to symphonies, opera, solo and chamber music etc.
The noice-cancelling is also great. I can't stand the excessive noise from trains, airplane..
The cable is replacable which means you do not need to spend another $500 everytime it breaks.
It is not the most comfortable but it is definitely improved. Once you get used to it, it will not be an issue.
Trust me, I am INSANELY picky.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Incredible sound; rather uncomfortable.
by Tofujr on December 25, 2010
Pros: Detailed sound: I was hearing faint cymbals and background instruments that I had no idea were in the mix.
Rich sound: Great mids! Makes the music sound fuller and warmer.
Replacable cable was a main selling point for me. I'll have these for years!Cons: My biggest problem with these: discomfort.
May desire amplification.Summary: I previously owned the Klipsch S4s and I often poked fun of their great patent of oval ear tips, having spent 3 years of research to figure out that ear ...
Summary: I previously owned the Klipsch S4s and I often poked fun of their great patent of oval ear tips, having spent 3 years of research to figure out that ear canals were oval. But now I realize how great that design is. I have tried all the included tips from Shure and none but the smallest rubber one could provide a good seal and comfort, and even that was still very uncomfortable. I proceded to use Klipsch's oval silicon tips which felt great, but since they were not designed for the Se535 they lack in sound quality. My only hope lies in the Comply T-100 foam tips I ordered, which are on their way. Of course, I am probably the minority. I have heard very good things about Shure's earphones' comfort.
As for sound quality they're perfect. I was using cheap 30 dollar in ears when I got the Klipsch S4s after reading good reviews. That was a HUGE step up in sound quality, I was amazed. And now I got my Se535s and I am once again amazed. I have had my eyes opened (or rather, ears) again to another new world of sound quality. Though of course, for me, the great sound is only in short bursts as the eartips are uncomfortable.
The mids of the Se535s was like hearing mids for the first time. I had no idea how full, rich and warm music can be. The sound was just so THERE. The bass in not overpowering, tight, and free of distortion. There is an adequate amount of it for any genre: hip hop, rock, metal, classical, etc.
As for amplification, any headphone, even low power ones would benefit from an amp. These do not need amplification but really would benefit from having one due to the triple driver design. My PCs sound card makes the Se535 sound far fuller than coming straight out of my iPhone 3GS. The iPhone sound is thinner in the low end and mids, though nonetheless still sounding great. This difference between a higher powered PC sound card and a portable device is far less pronounced in the other earphones and headphones I have used.
In all, it's flaws are discomfort and amplification. I am slowly adjusting to the eartips as they do seem considerably more comfortable than when I first got them a few days ago, and my Comply tips are on their way. Amplification I can deal with. They don't require amplification and sound great without it. But I personally think this would benefit more from amplification than others.
I bought this because I wanted the best consumer earphones availiable, and I wanted to have them for a long time (replacable cables as the cables are usually the first to break).1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
