Sound great, once you find the right fit
by alpainter on December 21, 2006
Pros: sound, price, weight, comfort, look cool
Cons: these would get a 10/10, but they are a little tricky to position. But once you do, WHOA MAMA!!
Summary: These things sound great, no doubt about it. They performed incredibly with my Toshiba Gigabeat and Rio Carbon Pearl. They even brought new sound from my Sandisk Sansa M260 (which ...
Summary: These things sound great, no doubt about it. They performed incredibly with my Toshiba Gigabeat and Rio Carbon Pearl. They even brought new sound from my Sandisk Sansa M260 (which is an awesome player, but used more for getting me through 3-4 hour bike rides than for sound quality!). If you are PATIENT ENOUGH to find the right fit in your ears with these babies, I'd say give them a shot. If you are expecting perfection with the first fit, well, it probably isn't going to happen. But if you stick with them, you won't be dissapointed.

Summary: Like so many Sony products these days, these headphones look good and start out performing well but after less than five weeks of light use, the right channel completely cut out. I've had so many Sony products perform in the same way. Stick with Sharp or Panasonic.

Best ear buds in its price range
by flounda on August 4, 2005
Pros: Comfortable, Good bass, Matches with sleekness and color of Ipod
Cons: At high volumes, others can hear the music

Summary: One of the hardest things about owning an Ipod is attempting to find a earphone that matches with it. I'm sure we all know how bad and uncomfortable the free buds are, so I ditched those automatically and went out in search for a better one.
I bought my Sony MDR-EX81's for Singapore $89, which is about US$50, a relatively cheap price. I was pleasently surprised to try them on and find that the sound quality to be pretty good. The bass guitar and drum can be seperated quite easily. Whilst quality of lower and higher frequencies could be improved, for its price I think there are no better ones available.
Comfort has always been what Sony has been reknowed for and this is no exception. Once in your ears it almost becomes second nature due to the lightweight and around the ear design.
One of the main concerns I have is that when you listen at higher volume levels, the sound can be heard by others around you. Not clearly, but still enough to be something that annoys me. I really dislike earphones that serve as a semi-amplifier as well. The wire does cause some rubbing noises, but they are only slight. I've tried cycling with them; jogging might cause more unwanted noise to occur.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Second pair of Sony Earbuds goes kaput. Thanks, Sony!
by mrmarkiem on April 15, 2009
Pros: Decent sound quality is offset by poor durability and chronic failure (from my experience).
Cons: Poor durability and SONY does not stand by their product. SONY is so contemptuous of their customers that they offer to replace your defective $30 headphones with a ?reconditioned,? used pair for $25. What a deal!
Summary: Do yourself a favor before buying: consider my experience with SONY: My second failed pair was shipped to Sony for service but was returned with a note saying, ?It would ...

Terrible Fit - Sound is decent
by Iceburn86 on June 27, 2008
Pros: Comes with interchangeable ear pieces that fit snug into your ear and allow for deep bass and overall nice sound.
Cons: Very flimsey disappointing design. Around the ear piece did not even come close to sitting on my ear.

Summary: I am returning these immediately. I bought them as a nice around the ear headphone to go running with, but I would not even walk with these. They are not adjustable and unless you have very large ears they won't fit snug at all. The around the ear portion wobbles about and eventually just pulls the entire headphone off. The cord is also designed like you might see on a cell phone headset where one earpiece has a shorter cable than the other which is just awkward.
End result: Ultra-secure fit should be taken off the package. If they do actually fit you you will probably be happy with the sound quality, but I wouldn't risk it. I look incredibly goofy in these headphones. -
Sound great if you can get it to stay on!

Summary: Rich bass and treble, but can not get the ear bud to stay in place. These 81LPs are advertised and designed with the odd ear loop that is suppose to make it fit better but it just does the opposite! Every couple of minutes I need to constantly adjust and shove it back in the ears! It does come with 3 sizes of rubber ear pieces, different sizes does make it fit better but they still slip and you constantly need to adjust every couple of minutes. I have other similar Sony ear buds that does not have the ear loop and they fit perfectly fine. I am giving this one to the girlfriend to play with and getting the 85LP instead.

sound good, until they break
by gpd209 on May 27, 2007
Pros: good sound quality, comfortable fit, look sharp
Cons: poor mfg quality, constantly fall out of ears, awkward cord length, cord tangles too easily, poor value
Summary: I really liked these at first. My first in-ear buds, these were a big improvement over other, cheaper headphones I tried.
UNTIL THEY BROKE.
The manufacturing/design quality on these ...Summary: I really liked these at first. My first in-ear buds, these were a big improvement over other, cheaper headphones I tried.
UNTIL THEY BROKE.
The manufacturing/design quality on these is awful. The wires are too thin and definitly won't withstand much use. The rubber insulation and encasing split and tore very quickly, rendering my headphones useless. These aren't $50 headphones. Since mine lasted only 3 months, they would cost me $200 for a year's worth of use. What a waste.
Also, the buds fell out of my ears all the time, and the cord length was strange--either exceptionally short, or with the extension, exceptionally long. -
Exhilarating experience
by QZ on July 25, 2005
Pros: crisp sound , great bass, nice white touch
Cons: none that i have verified
Summary: these headphones are great for audio listeners and i would recommend them to any iPod user. For the price the sound is brilliant compared to the $200 Shure E4cs.

Havent had the Ex71s so cant compare , but this has to b the right choice for anyone looking for excellent sound quality for under $50. (got them for $32 at Buy.com)
Great job sony, uv done it again ! -
Deep rich sound for the $$

Pros: Comes with Sm, Med, and Lg. ear pieces and a case
Cons: Cord may be a little long
Summary: This is a very good buy. I was very suprised at the sound quality these headphones produced for the amount of money I paid. Also (Jogger Friendly.)

Buyers Beware, try them on before purchasing!
by gravity007 on August 8, 2005

Summary: I wanted a better headphone than all those priced at <$25, and was replacing the RIO Sport earbud that has the ear wrap feature. I listen to the MP3 player only when excercising. The RIO ear wrap worked OK, and I thought that feature would keep them secure while running. This Sony simply does not fit my ears. If I put the earbuds in 1st and then try to wrap them, they fall out. If I wrap them 1st, the earbuds don't come close to my ear channel. They fit best if you disregard the wrap feature so it lies half in front and half behind the ear. Then they fall out every 15 strides instead of every stride. They do sound marginally better than the RIO ones, if I stand still, jam them into my ears just short of pain, and hold them there.
