Use the right rubber things!
Pros: You know, I've had these headphones for 6 months and hated them. Turns out, I never had the right rubber things picked out! I have fairly small ears, so I thought the small inserts were for me. Wrong! I had NO bass / all treble. I went back and got the bi
Cons: Took me a while to get the hang of it... Difficult at first to put in, but you get used to doing it! It'll take you 3 or 4 tries at the beginning to get them to fit just right, then you learn how to as you use them more. Not excellent for walking/jogging.

Summary: I've been very impressed with the sound from these earbuds. I've only had "stock" earbuds included with various MP3 players. I was looking for something mor comfortable and with better sound. These fit the bill. The are very comfortable and the sound is great. My only complaint is that they are easily pulled from the ear if you are not careful.
Updated
About a week after I wrote my review, the plastic insulation near the leaft earbud began to come apart. The cords on these are very thin and you must be careful when removing them from your ears. It is now held together with electrical tape. Due to this, I would change the rating to a seven.Updated
but I have since bought a set of Shure E2Cs and they are well worth the extra $50. The difference in sound is just incredible.7 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Strong bass, decent mids, poor highs.

Summary: For its price, I expect it to sound better. The bass is great. It produces the lower tones fairly well. You can hear strong punchy bass. The mid tones, like the vocal however does not sound natural. It sound a little muffle. What's very noticable are the highs, especially hisses and cymbals. It just doesn't sound as clean, but instead scratchy and distorted. So in the end, you get strong punchy lows, muffle mids, and scratchy highs. Sound quality isn't there, so if you want bass, this could be what you're looking for. Other than that, I have to say this earphone is very comfortable. Even after hours of listening, it doesn't hurt. Although I don't think that's good for your ear though. The wire wrap behind the neck is cool, one less thing in front of you to hassle with. The case is not too friendly though, so consider getting an extra one. Hope this helps...

Overall a nice deal
by koreez88 on September 12, 2005

Summary: I had for quite a time now and I can say that these are good. I had tons of various headphones before and these are the best so far. I even had a pair of a newer ones, with this small chord extention thing, but they are absolutely the same regarding the sound. These ones are a better deal.
The sound is loud and clear, the bass is filling. The headphone plug is small so it stays out of the way. Different length chord is a VERY good thing, way more comfortable than equally long chords (taken out of my own experience).
Well, nothing more left to say about them. They are durable, they are good sounding, they are cheap - what else do you need?3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

A subtilty of design makes these the best inexpensive ear-bud headphones!
by DarkHawke on May 28, 2005
Pros: Ultra-light, ultra-comfortable, excellent sound, great noise blocking, neck-chain design for easy wearing.
Cons: No wind-up case, not all that durable.

Summary: Unlike any other ear-bud headphones (except for its brand mates), the unique "neck-chain" style construction lets you hang these 'phones around your neck when not in use, like when you need to talk to someone. Chances are you'll regret it when that happens, 'cause these are the best sounding ear-bud headphones I've ever used. The closed in-ear design and INCREDIBLY comfortable silicone pads deliver the best bass you've ever heard, yet they're so light, you may forget you're wearing them. They block out so much external noise, if you're not playing music through them, your footsteps, your heartbeat and even rain hitting your head will be quite audible!
That said, I tend to go through about one set of these a year. Don't know if they're just not as durable as you'd want or I'm just hard on them, but Sony doesn't help the situation since, unlike their cheaper and not-as-good ear-buds, they don't provide a cool wind-up case for them, only a "capsule" that keeps the ear-buds themselves clean and protected. Don't be fooled by the slightly more expensive brand-mates that include a hard case. The case is VERY awkward to use and fragile its own self, and unless you have a player with a remote control with a headphone jack, you'll find the cord on that model is either too short without the included extension, or too long with it, thus contributing to them being easily jerked out of your ears and an even shorter lifespan.
Overall, though, that I keep re-buying them 'cause they're GREAT 'phones, I somehow doubt that the pricier 'buds are that much more durable, and I know that none of them have the you-don't-know-it-till-you-try-it convenience of the neck chain design. If you can deal with the feel of 'em snugged into your ears (and the distinct absence of external sound!), I'm sure you'll dig the incredible sound!2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Best sound i've ever heard in buds
Pros: Best earbuds i have ever heard. Bought them to replace the white ipod ones, and they are much better than ipod ones. Need to make sure you get a good seal between the ear canal and the rubber, or else they sound really bad. They isulate outside noise v
Cons: Unfortunately when anything touches the cord you can hear it. It carries through the cord and into the rubber touching your ear canal. Even walking to work, if the cord hits against my shirt, i can hear it. I can also hear anything in my head very loudl

Find the fit and there's no turning back
Pros: I've used these for almost a year, principally for airline travel, and to zone out in hotel rooms. There is nothing in this price range and design that comes close. Yes Grado's sound better, but they are next to useless in an airplane. Tried Bose but coul
Cons: After a while, the silicone tips can come off easily. Lost one on a flight and found out I had to pay $11 for ONE. Bought another headphone set instead. Hence the lower scoe for Svc/Supp. The case offers a sort of protection. I roll the cord around this c

To get proper bass, you MUST fit the rubber things to your ears!
by lgkiii on January 7, 2006
Pros: Once you fit the rubber things, the sound is very good
Cons: If you don't fit the rubber things, the sound is AWEFUL
Summary: If you don't play with the rubber caps that come with the MDR-EX51LP, you will get COMICALLY tinny output.

I mean, you'll look at the things and wonder, "I paid thirty bucks for this?"
Simply put, if you don't fit the phones so that they are snug in your ear, you won't get any bass--NONE.
A poster for a similar Sony model admonished users to "Read the directions!" The problem is, the directions curtly tell you to fit them snugly into your ear. But, what is snug? Means different things to different people.
Sony could provide diagrams of proper and improper fit, and say something about pressure against the ear canal. They could provide trouble-shooting with the packaging. They could provide a way of measuring ones ear (seriously), but they don't.
So, the phones get hammered in a few reviews for having pitiful sound quality. Sony has no one to blame but themselves for the poor reviews.
The phones are fine. To get bass, it's all about the fit. Fit, fit, fit.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Gnarly earbuds!

Summary: I have had these headphones for about a year now. They are great! I use them for my Zen Micro. They are probably waterproof because one day I left them in my pocket, so they went through the washer and dryer, and the only damage was the cable got stripped about 1 inch(fixed it with duct tape). They are uncomfortable only when you have them in for a long time, but a 5 minute break will fix that! I would say these are good if you want some portable headphones for your MP3 player.

good sound, poor reliability
by dwnelson on June 10, 2005

Summary: I have had two pair of these earbuds, and while they're comfortable and sound better than most earbuds under $50, I have had two pair go bad on me within 6 months (one earbud would lose ~80% of its volume) - luckily the latter pair was within the store's 30 day return policy. These are nice headphones for a good price, but buyer beware. I have switched over to Etymotic's ER-6i's ($80 if you find a deal online) and the sound is vastly superior to the Sonys, although I've only had them for a month, so I cannot comment on their reliability. Do it right and get the better pair the first time.
