Sony MDR-AS50G Active price range: $44.99 - $103.32

The good: The Sony MDR-AS50G Active Headphones feature an innovative design that spirals down for easy, compact storage, and it helps to ensure a secure fit. The modular cable is ideal for fitness and portable applications. The sound quality is good, and the price is fair.
The bad: The Sony MDR-AS50G's band tends to stick out from the sides of the head, which can make it hard to conceal under hair. The band is not adjustable, so not all users will be able to have it loop behind the ear.
The bottom line: The Sony MDR-AS50G Active Headphones offer an affordable price tag, a secure fit, and good sound quality--they're a fantastic option for gym addicts.

Summary: I really wanted these to work because it's truly the first pair of headphones that got it right on the fit. In the end I just couldn't get past the poor bass and low volume. I tried adjusting the EQ settings and different size buds but still didn't help the bass. And some songs, well you just gotta crank up. I was at full volume with these and I needed more. Of course I'm partially to fault by not looking at the specs.

disapointing
by David Alves do Valle on October 26, 2009
Pros: It fits good on ears, very inovative
Cons: There is absolutely no bass whatsoever in these headphones. The sound quality is worse than the older one JVC i have.
Summary: Absolutely no bass on this headphone, I am very desappointed. It will probably be left.

Happy customer
by caleeakins on August 5, 2009
Pros: Stylish design, lightweight, compact, good sound, blocks outside noise.
Cons: Somewhat bright sounding high end.
Summary: I cannot collaborate reports of lacking bass; they have quite powerful bass output. If experiencing weak bass, I suggest trying the different silicone ear pads for best fit.

After owning this product a while, I've concluded that, as the editorial review suggested, an adjustable head band would be an improvement, one that should be incorporated in future versions.
The treble is slightly aggressive and harsh, which may be a benefit for those with hearing loss. But the powerful bass helps Balance things out, and provides an overall pleasing sound quality. Vocals and sonic details are clear.
These are efficient headphones. I believe the rated 100 dB sensitivity is conservative. The Sony MDR-AS50G are much louder than my Philips SHN5500 noise canceling headphones (also rated 100 dB) with the power off, and slightly louder still with the Philips powered on. I'd rate them at least 110 dB. And the silicone ear pads provide good acoustic isolation, comparable to my noise canceling Philips, an added bonus.

Since they did not include an adjustable head band, and the fit was slightly loose, I pulled out my tool box and went to work. Attaching a two inch wire, cut from a clothes hanger, to the center point of the headband allows a more secure fit and consistent sound by bending the metal attachment to a smaller radius than the headband's. The physical connection is a challenge. I clamped the parts and coated in Goop household glue, then tightly wrapped in 3M electrical tape when dry. Sure, a hassle, but the end results are worth it. -
Would never buy Sony headphones again.

Summary: I owned two pairs of these. The first pair, the right ear died about three weeks after the warranty was up. I bought a second pair becuase I liked them so much only to have the exact same thing happen. I kept using this second pair becuase I don't have the money to buy another set of headphones. The left ear on this set died about six months after I bought them.
They are great sounding headphones but don't expect them to last more than three to six months. -
Stopped working after 4 uses

Pros: Light weight, stable in ear during exercise
Cons: Needs more base response
Summary: The right ear piece stopped working after 1 year with occasional (4) uses. Of course, bought them at Circuit City, so can't take them back. Not my usual experience ...

Summary: I've gone through several headphones, including many models of the Sony Sports headphones, Bose in-the-ear, and Apple... and these headphones are the best of the bunch. It's a nice design, they don't fall out during a workout with heavy movement (jumping, running, etc.), and they can play loud.

by Project_X on March 30, 2009
Pros: Great fit, comfortable, stayed in place @ the gym. Great sound.
Cons: Had to return to Amazon after only two uses. Right side stopped working, very frustrated with the quality. For $50 you should look elsewhere...
Summary: Spend the $50 on something that will last more than a week...

Worst Headphones I Ever Bought!!!
by dufaul01 on February 17, 2009
Pros: Very Stable when working out. Other headphones tend to move around when running or lifting weights.
Cons: After about two months the right side earphone went out. Very dissapointed with the price I paid versus the quality. Hard to adjust earphones to comfort. Cord is not long enough.
Summary: Read the editor's review and was excited at first. When headphones went after two months of use, along with medicore sound quality, I was not impressed. Bought a cheap ...

Do NOT BUY, it broke after a few uses, no Bass, low vol
by romodoc on February 2, 2009
Pros: stylish, will stay in your ears
Cons: No bass, It broke after few uses, volume is very low even at top volume in my ipod, Worst of all, they broke after few uses. If you sweat more than average, this designo will drive the sweat right into your ear cannal.
Summary: "I got this pair about 4 months ago, I use it mainly for running, and I usually run with a partner, so I really need it when running alone, which ...
Summary: "I got this pair about 4 months ago, I use it mainly for running, and I usually run with a partner, so I really need it when running alone, which is about 3 to 4 times a month, That?s how often used them.
The overall performance is poor, they barely have any bass, and the volume is very low. I am not very picky whit sound when it comes to sport headphones and I was ok with volume because I need to hear my surroundings while running. Also the neck band goes up in a way it will drive the sweating from your head to go right in the ear and I had to stop and dry it at least twice during my run.
Worst of all, last time I went for a long the right side just stopped working, very frustrating to hear half the sound of just at the beginning of a 13+ mile run.
This was shortly after the 90 day warranty so Best Buy won?t help me at all and Sony support just offered me a replacement for around 27 bucks plus Tax, plus shipping. I wouldn?t pay even half of that for headphones with this performance. Very disappointed, I use to have a Sony mp3 player made for running, the little stick with pedometer, I losted when as already off the market, but it was great and had just fine headphones, that?s why I went for a 50+ Sony sport set.
I can do anything about it but I can keep you from doing the same mistake. Do not buy this pair." (I had this same review in the sonystyle web page, they refused to post it, I edited it to meet their "regulations" and its been almost a month and still not there, they don't answer my emails. Reviews are disabled for me when i log in at their webpage. It's actually 5 stars in their webpage, So disapoited with sony costumer service)
Lastly, I don't think CNET gave a real field test to this pair before giving EC, or maybe durability is not on the check list and they test the sound in a noise isolated room. -
Sony did forget the bass
by mike303333 on January 26, 2009
Pros: Very comfortable. Comes with 3 different style of earbuds and a carrying case. Lightweight, and look to be durable.
Cons: There is absolutely no bass whatsoever in these headphones. The sound quality is worse than the standard ear buds that come with an Ipod. I tried them on two different ipods and they sounded the same to make sure.
Summary: I'm returning these tomorrow. :(
