Summary: I bought these when I returned the headphones I got as a gift (also from Sony, forget the model, $44 at Futureshop then on sale for $14 after Christmas, whoa.).
Walmart had them on sale for $50, another local store had them for $100. I liked how they sounded, but didn't want to pay $100 for them, glad I found them for cheaper.
Comparing to the headphones my cousin got, Beats By Dre, these headphones rock! Why spend $150+ on "fancy" headphones that my Sony headphones can do, for a lot less money.
Bass is astounding. A lot of dubstep is played through these, and all the notes sound perfect. Sony has never let me down, and this is exactly why. Good job!
They are rather huge though...3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excellent bass, but big driver hurts other ranges
by addrock528 on April 15, 2010
Pros: The bass is, as it claims, excellent. As if I were hooked into a system w/ a subwoofer. I find the headphones very stylish yet avant garde b/c of the size. Super-comfortable king-sized earpads. Decently priced (I got mine on sale).
Cons: I think that because the driver is so large, the high trebels and clarity of the mids are washed out. If you listen, everything is there but not balanced. Maybe this can be rectified by playing with the equalizer.
Summary: If you are a bass-head or want an alternative headset to your bass-weak counterparts-- this headphone delivers. If you are an audiophile and want to hear your music in perfect ...
Summary: If you are a bass-head or want an alternative headset to your bass-weak counterparts-- this headphone delivers. If you are an audiophile and want to hear your music in perfect clarity and balance, you should be shelling out for the crazy good headphones anyways. Ideal for gaming/movies. If you are tired of how light and "tinny" your computer speakers or headphones sound, this is a remedy. The sound is similar to listening to a loud concert live or the THX sound in cinema. Both great in the right context.

Most comfortable headphones yet

When compared to other brands, these really deliver a quality sound at a reasonable price.
Package includes a carry pouch with straps.
The size is a bit large and it does not fold, but if your primary use is at home or the office, then you will be pleased with the comfort -- these are truly the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn (I am wearing it as I write this review, that's how comfortable it is).
I never realized how impressive music sounded on my Macbook until I plugged this headphone in. Wow -- I am listening right now and am feeling the base thumping to the beat!
You can turn the volume down and still hear it loud and clear.
The soft ear pads feel like pillows on my ears. Good job, Sony !!
Rediscover your music all over again with the Sony MDR-XB500 (extra base) headphones.
I am going to be watching movies with these for the full effect.

Worth the Buy
by koolbreeze5 on June 2, 2013
Pros: VERY comfortable, great powerful bass, cheap, flexible, long cord that never tangles
Cons: 90 day warranty, bass can knock wires out of solders, music leaks out at louder volumes, they are big but I don't really mind.

Summary: I bought these headphones back in January of 2013. I absolutely fell in love with the comfort and the amount of bass that hit my ears. I'm a complete basshead and the only way I can describe the feeling of the bass is that it feels like you have subwoofers in your ears. I listened to them everyday at full volume and haven't had a problem till June of 2013. The powerful bass accidentally pulled a wire out of the solder and made the left channel cut in and out but was fixable (which saved the trouble of $35 replacement. They definitely were worth buying and would definitely buy again. They sound fantastic and are pretty sturdy. They definitely hold they're own against Beats and I've known Beats users who have returned they're headphones for the cheaper and better sounding option, the MDR-XB500. Take it from a Dubstep music producer, you will never find a better sounding option for less.

Great STATIONARY headphones

Summary: I concur with most reviewers about the sound. However - BEWARE! These headphones have very thick soft cushions (hence they're very comfortable) but the fit is not tight. So they're great if you're a 'PASSIVE' listener, i.e. sitting still or relatively non-abrupt head movements.
If you're an ACTIVE listener and like to 'rock' or dance (ie bobbing your head) to the music, these head phones are USELESS. Because the cushions are soft, the drivers move around in relation to your ears, and the sound becomes totally distorted and warped, ruining your listening experience.
So, to all those expressive music lovers, these headphones are not for you. But for the non-head-bobbing listener, or for movies, these are great. -

Got some knock
by KashgroundMultisashTM on May 14, 2012
Pros: The bass is one of the clearest and the sound quality isnt affected by it.
Cons: NOT as clear as the ultrasone9,but then again ultrasone9's are 250 bucks more expensive.
Summary: 4-24,00 frequency range and has like a smile thing going on in it's graph(Which means it can be flat if you want it but very low heavy)...
