The editors of cnet missed the best sound on non noise reducing headphones around.
by brianwpalmer on May 1, 2008
Pros: The best sound outside a studio. Frequency respone 5-30,000. Terrific sound. Still around $100.
Cons: Nothing except size that some don't like, but after they hear them, anyone who appreciates music wants one.
Summary: Users of this cite rate them 9.4. That score is unheard of and there is a reason. I am a musician and have had these over 10 years. Truly ...
Summary: Users of this cite rate them 9.4. That score is unheard of and there is a reason. I am a musician and have had these over 10 years. Truly phenominal sound reporduction. The bass is clear and low, even on low volume- unheard of on other headphones. Tremnendous sound clarity and instrument clarity throughout the cound ranges. People will hear things on their favorite music they never heard before. I have had some of the same problems as others with the foam eventually getting worn on them, and the cord wearing out, but after thousands of hours of use it's to be expected. But, I am going out to buy my 2nd pair (and maybe my third in case they stop making them- for when the second wears out) beacuse I have tried hundreds and nothing even comes close. I realize the new noise reducing headphones may be an advantage for limited situations like a plane but I'd compete these head to head on sound production anywhere else BUT A PLANE, and believe these would win hands down.

The Best Investment in Full Ear Headphones
by rainierakarain on April 20, 2009

Responsive bass

Summary: I have no idea how CNET missed one of the best full ear headphones ever. I bought these headphones at Fry's electronics and have never regretted it. The bass thumps well without being lossy. It is also responsive to the mid and high ends of music. These headphones are comfortable for a full day use although be weary that they do get warm after awhile and produce ear sweat. I did notice that after prolonged use, the earpad cushions detiorated. I would recommend buying Beyerdynamic Earpad Cushions (compatible with the V6). I've been told that they are more comfortable than the stock cushions. These headphones are a definite buy.

Amazing Value, Excellent sound, a Classic
by homsar57 on February 21, 2012
Pros: Extreme value, jaw dropping sound stage, wonderful and accurate reproduction of any kind of music
Cons: I can't marry a pair of headphones, and I guess I had to pay for them

Also as of writing this review, these headphones have 20 reviews written about them; ALL of those reviews gave then 5 stars. By contrast; look at the review page for the iconic beats by Dr dre headphones. 28 reviews and only 9 of them were 5 stars.
It says a lot about a product these days when it's been on the market for more than 20 years. With today's 2-3 year product cycle, old technology becomes outdated and obsolete fast, forcing many once revered products into retirement. This is extremely impressive when you consider the company that makes these headphones is Sony; a huge multinational corporation that rarely has any one product out for more than 2 years. So why have they stuck around for so long? Simple; because they're amazing. No set of headphones in this price class (and several above) can hope to come close to how balanced these things are. All frequencies are represented accurately; just as they were recorded and without any coloration. Bass is tight and layered; yet unlike some other neutral, audiophile grade headsets, they still have some real kick to them. Mid range frequencies are fluid and sweeping; making you feel as if you were surrounded by the music, and the high frequencies are highly detailed without scraping at your ears like many other "purist" headphones. Though not as revealing as a set of $500 headphones, these are not anywhere close to that. Hovering around $65 most days(Cnet lies, these NEVER cost $195), these cans provide incredible value. Don't take this the wrong way; they're not amazing for what they are, they're amazing period. Buy these for editing, sound stage monitoring, or neutral listening and you won't be disappointed. Though if you buy these because you want "street cred" and bass that makes your heart beat backwards, you clearly didn't understand a word I said.

Impressed by Sony

Summary: I can't hear myself type when I use them. The sound produced even at max volume can't be heard by others around as long as the headphones are pressed against something, either themselves or your head. Perfect for work. Its adjustable head strap works ok. Comes with a leather or fake leather bag to put the headphones in, can't tell but I think its fake leather.
I was going to get V-Moda bass earbuds, but I am glad I got these instead.

Why hasn't an editor reviewed these classics?
by nateth on November 8, 2012
Pros: Fabulous, rich and invigorating sound.
Cons: Some may not like the size.
The earpads do deteriorate after a few years of use.Summary: The best $80 I've ever spent on audio equipment. These headphones are the absolute best in the price class and rival headphones that cost hundreds more.

Clearly brings out the nuances of music.
by jwhutson on May 20, 2012
Pros: Clear sound, nice dynamic range, neutral equalization. After trying to hear movie soundtracks on cheap ear buds flying with my new iPad, I plugged these headphones into the iPad when I got home. What a revelation.
Cons: I do not find the over the ear design all that comfortable, so am leaning towards the on the ear design of the Bose Q-3. Also, the Sony's are too bulky for travel, and do not come with a convenient case to protect them.
Summary: These headphones are the standard against which to judge noise cancelling headphones for music and voice quality. I don't expect to replace these headphones (the 10 foot cord works ...

Summary: I bought my first Sony MDR V-6 sometime back in the early 80's. When the vinyl covering the earphones started to shed, I went shopping for another pair not necessarily expecting to purchase another MDR V-6 given how much time had passed. However, I was able to compare different phones at B & H and I found that I preferred the overall comfort and sound of the V-6 to any available comparison phones (including Grados and Sennheisers) that in some cases cost almost twice as much.
While the top models of Sennheisers did have a more finely detailed sound and accurate tonal balance than the V-6, they were going for $350 and up.
Now that I've had the new V-6 at home for awhile, I continue to be really impressed by their sound quality. One quibble is that the bass seems to be slightly overemphasized, but not nearly enough to mask other frequencies. My receiver has separate tone controls for headphones and I turned the bass down one notch.
I later purchased Pearstone foam wraps for the V-6 to replace the original vinyl which I then used to put on my original V-6. I found that the Pearstone made the phones a little more comfortable and also, I think, improved the sound by making it a little more 3-dimensional. There is a logical explanation for this - the foam on the Pearstone lets the sound from the drivers pass through to your ears while the vinyl blocks the sound. Therefore, the larger surface area from which you receive sound with the foam wrap on could account for the improved dimensionality.
