The good: The Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 EB features an excellent design, as well as a booming low end that doesn't completely wipe out the high frequencies.
The bad: The cable for the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 EB is on the short side, and the bass response is too heavy for folk, jazz, and classical music.
The bottom line: Bass addicts with a desire to maintain an articulate high end in their music will enjoy the quality Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 EB in-ear set, while purists who prefer flat EQ should steer clear.
The Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 EB is a beautifully designed set, so we'll start with our only complaint: Like many of the Ultimate Ear models out there, the cable is very short (46 inches), so unless you are very close to your sound source, expect to have your movement hindered. This annoyance aside, the company caters to stereophiles--which is why a bass-heavy model comes as a bit of a surprise--so the internal design for its sets is always impressive. In this case, we have a dedicated 13.5mm woofer (hey, when it's sitting right next to your eardrum, 13.5mm is big) and a crisp tweeter to match. Once you insert the earpieces and twist them upward, they fit snuggly--the different-size rubber earpiece covers will ensure this--and eliminate a good portion of outside noise.
Aside from the heavy bass boost, there really isn't much to speak about in the way of features here, but the 'buds do include a nice array of accessories. In addition to the aforementioned rubber ear fittings, which come in three sizes, you get an earplug-style piece and a compressible foam one. We found the foam to be the most comfortable. Plus, Ultimate Ears throws in a hard, metallic case; a black leather case; a 1/4-inch headphone-jack adapter; a volume attenuator; and a very handy earbud-cleaner pick.
In our tests, performance was stellar from a bass lover's perspective. When we pumped some electronic music or rap into the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 EBs, they certainly rose to the challenge: Fischerspooner's "Emerge" was a low-end tour de force, and the results were similar when we played M.I.A.'s Arular. The high-end frequencies are certainly overshadowed by the lows, but they are still quite articulate, albeit much lower in the overall mix.
Audio purists may be unnerved to see a company so squarely based in the audiophile realm to deliver a pair of headphones specifically designed to distort the EQ balance and provide booming bass. But Ultimate Ears still makes its non-EB line for the audiophile, and its new expansion into the low-end market is the most successful attempt at the most clear-sounding heavy-bass earphone set we've come across. Thunderous without completely sacrificing the high-end clarity, the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 EB is a good purchase for the discriminating bass addict.

Updated
These are large earbuds , but very comfortable . They dont go deep inside the ear canal or create pressure but seal perfectly. The cord is very skinny and doesnt transmit alot of cable noise , the cable is also replaceable (plugs into the buds ). They stick out from the ear more than other buds , but not horribly far. The cable goes over the ear , but since its such a thin cable its not annoying. I think they look great despite their larger than normal size.
Sound wise I am extremely happy with these buds . If you feel for bass in earbuds and want clarity and great....no fantastic volume levels these are buds for you. The bass is not overpowering but it is BIG , meaning it doesnt wipe out or kill the rest of the sound , highs and mids exist nicely along with the thumping bass.
I listen mostly to rock , techno , punk , oldies ect not so much classical . I have several songs that collapse earbuds with bass , the superfi 5 ebs handle it no problem . If you like bass get these buds . I am not putting down the shure series or sony series but they sound like an AM radio comparitively "IN MY OPINION". Im certain other peoples opinions and needs are different and I respect that. These buds are for bass lovers.....and I am a bass lover.
Finally ....the price I paid was more than I wanted to pay for earbuds $199.00 but I tried everything less and more $$$ and these are the ones I need.2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

(1)outstanding sound quality
(2) equally outstanding customer service
I just have to say this is the first expensive pair of earphones I have ever bought and boy am I impressed. I picked these up after looking on cnet for about a month. I was nervous because I've never spent more than $20 (before tax) on a pair of earphones. The moment I put them and connected them to my Sony NW-HD5 mp3 player I new I had reached a new pinnacle in sound quality. The bass is literally a force to be reckoned with-as someone said in another review, the only problem is I had to turn it down to keep from blowing out my ears, especially when listening to techno or basically anything with bass. No matter how loud they get, I hear zero distortion. The treble also comes through as clearly as you want it to, especially if you simply adjust your EQ just a little or just turn down the bass a bit (I'm surprised no one talked about this before.
O.k. now the best part...the customer service. I had a problem, which I think was related to my overly sweaty self. I go on very vigorous runs and sometimes water would just pours off of my head and into the phones. They were getting very wet-one time and the left side seemed to sound ever-so-slightly softer than the right (I am an audiophile so I was feeling confident about my perception). I called who I found out is the main customer service representative-her name is Jeannete-and she was so sweet and customer service oriented (and I mean, she sounded like the kind of girl a guy would want to take home to mama. She accepted the phones back without any questions, and even called me back within two days after I sent them back with tracking for a replacement pair. Within 4 days I had a new pair ready to go. I now wear a hat when I sweat, and I've had them for 3 months now without any problem. A big thank you to Jeannet for standing behind her excellent product. I would recommend this product to anyone wanting superp sounding phones that have ability to crank out the bass!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I can't say enough good things about these phones. They manage to provide powerful, punchy bass, without coloring the mid and high frequencies. They have a heavy bottom, but why buy phones that are labeled EB unless you want extra bass. You can play your source material EQ'd on a flat setting and still have that wonderful bass punch. These phones will give you a full rich bass sound and still get crystal clear vocals, guitar, organ, etc. Excellent seperation, imaging and detail. With these phones, I have heard nuances in songs that I have listened to many, many times, that I had never heard previous to listening to them with the Super.fi 5 EB. I sit here typing this review listening to Yellow Ledbetter, and the strat sounds as though it is inside of my head and not in my ears. They are comfortable, powerful accurate at the mid and high frequencies, with the gift of ample bass at the bottom. What can I say, if you don't like bass, stay away!

Summary: I'm a female with small ear canals and have always had a problem with earphones falling out of my ear, besides them always sounding horrible. I had to suffer with big headphones. I looked like I was wearing earmuffs all year round and it messed up my hair. It sounds great in my 80gb ipod and if your familiar with the low volume of a psp it makes mine sound great (Much Louder). The bass is tremendous, noise cancellation is great and overall the sound is superb. I just think the cord should have been a little bit more sturdier.

work guys.
At first, I was looking for a pair of noise canceling phones figuring that?s the best technology for minimizing ambient sound while listening to music. I am sure the Bose QC 2 and 3 do their job but the prices? I read reviews on Philips? Noise Canceling buds, model HN060, and decided to try these. They were terrible. They were no better than the standard IPod ear pieces for fit and sound.
So I realized if I wanted great sound I will have to cough up a few bucks. I read reviews on the top models such as Shure Ec series, Bose, and Sony. I was strongly considering buying Shure?s Ec5 or the E500PTH ($500!) but I had to order these online if I wanted them. I did not want to wait for these in the mail.
So I took a trip to CompUsa and saw they had UE 5 Pro and EB. I figured it was a matter of taste on which produced the better sound. I am a bass lover so I went with the EBs (cheaper price too, $129). As expected, very good non distorted bass; however, mid and treble, IMO, are a bit muffled but palatable for my liking. I am sure if I would of bought the 5 Pro, it would of produced exception mid/treble but sacrificed the bass. I tried many EQ settings on my Nano but I could not find the best combo for a full range of sound. The Hip-Hop setting seems to the best overall.
The fit takes getting used to ? it is truly snuggled within the ear canal, so much so that I fear pulling these out of my ears abruptly would suction my ear drums out of my head. But I do like how they created a little hook out of the wire assy, which creates a nice secure fit over the ears. I am going to try the other bud pieces, which come with the phones, to see if they have a more non-threatening fit.
Great, GREAT, noise isolation. I have the volume set to low/medium and I can?t hear myself type as I am writing this. Just awesome.
One con, tho. The buds come with a metal canister as a carrying case. But, for the life of me, I could not arranging the buds within the tiny compartment. I don?t want to jam the buds in there so I decided to just put them in my jacket pocket. I think a nice leather pouch would of sufficed.
Overall, great sound and noise isolation! But with passable mid/treble it makes me wonder what sound the Shure E500PTHs were producing. -

Summary: I was skeptical when I first saw these earphones...I found them for 149.00 and figured, they would be worth a try...I am speechless, when it comes to describing the sound quality these monitors produce...IMHO, if they cost $300, they'd still be worth it!...
I also bought the Super.fi 3's and they are just as impressive, although not as strong on the bass response (to be expected) but superior to every other earphone I've ever owned...
