Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 Studio (white) price range: $129.95

The good: The Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 Studio in-ear-style headphones deliver accurate sound for a reasonable price, and they offer a comfortable, secure fit.
The bad: The Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 Studio earphones' cable is too short for tall users.
The bottom line: Ultimate Ears' no-frills Super.fi 3 Studio in-ear headphones deliver a clear, balanced audio response. This set should be your top choice in the $100 price range.
The design of the Ultimate Ears Super.fi earphone series is based in comfort and simplicity, though you do get a choice of three colors: white, black, or clear (the last is available exclusively at Guitar Center retail stores). The earpieces, after a bit of twisting, sit firmly and comfortably in the ear canal, and the different sizes of earpiece covers not only aid this process but also effectively block out most room noise, making them ideal for noisier environments, such as airplanes or subway trains. Like other Ultimate Ears 'buds, these have the flexible plastic ear loop that wraps over the top of your ear for a secure fit. These are helpful for active use but can be a pain when you're trying to put on the headphones in a hurry. Our common gripe about the Super.fi series holds true for the Super.fi 3 Studios: At 46 inches, the cable is simply too short for anyone above average height. If your sound source is not in your lap or your pocket, your head movement is quite limited.

Most of the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 Studio's features reside in the design of the headphones, though the company also includes a decent smattering of accessories. Along with five sets of ear fittings, you get a soft leather case and a cleaner pick. One of the niftiest features of these earphones--and all the other Ultimate Ears sets we've tested--is the user-replaceable cable. The earpieces easily snap off so that if the cable wears out, you can easily swap in a new one. (Note that you'll be responsible for replacing the cable--only the earpieces are covered by the two-year warranty.) Inside each earpiece, there's a precision-balanced speaker and an audio filter that shapes the sound. Basically, what this equates to is excellent performance.
The great news about a speaker or a headphone set with relatively flat response--meaning none of the frequency ranges seem to be louder than others--such as the Super.fi 3 Studio, is that almost anything will sound good. While rap or electronic music may seem to lack a bit of the thump that some listeners easily grow accustomed to in today's bass-heavy market, the low end is still quite present. As for rock, jazz, classical, or folk, all seem ideal for this Ultimate Ears earphone set. The delicate guitar picking and bucolic baritone of Bill Callahan (a.k.a. Smog) on his latest LP, A River Ain't Too Much to Love, comes through crystal clear, with just enough subtle low end for hearing the resonance in his vocals. Switching to the heavier, often sludgy textures of art rockers Deerhoof on its latest album, The Runners Four, proves that often the greatest sounds an electric bass makes lie in the midfrequencies, not the low end, and the Super.fi 3s highlight them beautifully.
There are plenty of in-ear sets out there in the $100 price range that sound excellent--and Shure certainly makes a worthy contender--but the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 Studio headphones are probably the best.

Good sound for the price

Pros: good quality sound, low price, very, very comfortable

Summary: For the 60-80 dollars these headphones will set you back, they deliver both an immersive experience and very little sound deterioration. Certainly, they are the best earbuds I have ever owned, but seeing as all the others were both uncomfortable and cheap, that isn't much of a surprise. Once again, they do not have the very best sound quality, though one would be hard-pressed to find better ones in this price range.
As for the cons, first of all, the holder is really stupid. It consists of a simple pleather puch, as would be expected of a flash drive or the like. In my experience, most consumer headphones have a hard case which can store the phones and cord in a coil, making for a safe and convenient storage area. Such a feature would have been greatly appreciated, as breaking them would constitute 70 dollars essentially down the drain. Otherwhise, the cord is short, but not that bad, and the documentation is minimal. What documentation would you really expect of an earbud, though?2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Pros: great mids and highs reproduction and noise isolation. cable doesn't tangle so much.
Cons: cable gets too sturdy after time (black one), bass range is weak without EQ.

also the isolate almost all outside noise (i almost got hit by an ambulance because i didnt hear it at all). they fit to the ear and hold on really securely.
the cable is great, it doesnt tangle much, but after a year my black cable become very inflexible and sturdy. (i have replaced it for a clear one, which is made of better material) -
Nice Sound but Hard for me to use.
by cryogenius on February 20, 2009
Pros: If you can get these to plug firmly into the ear canal the sound is really good.
Cons: It is hard for me to figure out left from right quickly and to get them inserted firmly. When I sue these for running or riding my bike they keep loosening up. The cable is too stiff so the cord tends to ride against my neck - a little annoying.

Summary: At first the original earbud that was installed when i got the package was a bit big for me, so i quickly adjusted to smaller ones that came with the package. After fitted smaller ones they still felt a bit weird at first but after 10mins of listening they became very comfortable to wear.
Ultimate Ears have finnally changed the flimsy pleather bag to a harder plastic case which provides better portections for the earphones when not in use.
The sound qaulity of the the high and mid end is superb. You can cleary work out the channels of each of the levels. Very clear sound and excellent dynamics around these levels. The low end bass is clear, but lacks the thump.
Being a 5ft8 person i found the 46inch cable to be a nice length., but if you are taller than you will most likely find it a bit too short for your liking.
Overall the earphones offers great sound and i say its designed more for listeners who enjoy the soft easy music, such as your Classics and and Soft rock. If you are a fan of the heavy dance and trance, than you are probably better off with something with a bit more bass thump. -
Incredible sound, shoddy Materials
by zunefan1 on December 2, 2007
Pros: bass is good, treble is good, frequency response is good, music sounds fantastic!
Cons: I have had these 11 months and the casing around the cords has shredded
Summary: These headphones sound superb but their construction is anything but durable. Excellent sound, weak durability.

Not what I thought I'd get
by kentannenbaum1 on August 28, 2007
Pros: Once they're on, they stay on
Cons: The bass end is non-existant
Summary: Overall, I guess they serve the purpose if you're on-stage. Getting around town, however, they're a pain to put on (or take off) quickly.

Summary: I bought these to replace the free ipod headphones and was thrilled with the sound overall initially. The bass became buzzy on some hip-hop workout music but the high end and mid-range was thrilling. I heard things that were previously just hums and background noise.
The earbuds were difficult to position confortably and kept needing to be repositioned.
After 1 week of ownership, during a workout, with constant repositioning, the left ear just died. I returned them. On the lookout for something else in the price range just to use at the gym. If you're not going to use it at the gym, I think it would be an excellent buy(if you can get the earpieces to be comfortable. -
Good earbud for noisy places

Summary: This is my first pair of "good" earbuds so I was pleasantly surprised by the good sound and isolation, with plenty of volume and bass from my portable player. You have to get the ear seal just right to get the full bass response (I put a medium tip in one ear and a small in the other). They sound good on a wide range of music. I have not tried them on a plane yet but they work great while vacuuming! They came with a hard metal case from Headroom that looks better than the soft one. The cord is too short, though.

Summary: *Much* more detailed and musical than the standard Apple earbuds. Weak bass, but can be improved to reasonable by using the bass booster eq setting on your iPod. I was very pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the UEs are, how securely they stay in my ears, and their good sound isolation. Benefits substantially outweigh the weak bass.
