The good: The Beats Solo by Dr. Dre Headphones from Monster offer a stylish, compact, and durable design that lends itself well to on-the-go use. The cable is ultranice and features an integrated mic, iPod controls, and volume rocker. Bass is thumping, and the package includes a handy carrying case.
The bad: The Beats Solo headphones may not be comfortable for everyone, audio is muddy overall, and they leak a fair amount of sound.
The bottom line: The Beats Solo by Dr. Dre Headphones from Monster offer a killer, travel-friendly design that's sure to turn heads, but the audio quality fails to live up to the price tag.

The best headphones I've ever owned.
by jlutgring on October 30, 2010
Pros: These cans absolutely sound great on a high quality amp.still sounds good on a mp3 player but you can hear a difference. I'm an an ex-musician. I lost my high frequency hearing years ago but I just bump up the highs with the eq and it sounds great.
Cons: Can get tight on the head after a couple of hours. Ears sweat.

Summary: I can't understand why so many people think the build quality is awful. Show me a pair of headphones that are better built in the same price range. YOU CAN'T. The Bose, as good as they sound, are all plastic. Same for Senheiser with their vinyl earpads that start peeling away after a year or two. I may be wrong but I think some of these people who complain about them breaking treat these headphones with the same care they have for their mp3 players, which is what they use these for and, guess what? You can't toss these around and expect them to last. You learn to pay attention to these things when you become an adult. The sound is great. It's not flat but I hate a flat frequency response and you would to if you did a side by side comparison so these are not for your stuffy audiophile. Go buy some Grados. These are VERY musical and a lot of FUN to listen to. Everything pops. Listen to some Dave Weckl tracks on these things and you simply cannot stop smiling. You hear each individual instrument clearly, perfectly. Plus, they play painfully loud! So if that's your thing, go for it. These things are right on the money. I also own a pair of some Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 Pro ear buds and the Beats Solo are the ones I enjoy the most. I also use the headphones for binaural beats pain management and I can hear perfectly all the way down to 16 hz. Way cool. Great job, Monster!

Beats B Sick
by Corrieman14 on October 6, 2010
Pros: Amazing sound whether you're listening to Rap, Rock, or even classical these headphones live up to their name. The price tag is a little steep but it's worth the quality of sound you get from them. They are comfortable on your head for a few hours.
Cons: Ive heard everywhere that they do break easily so you have to be careful with them but just because they are expensive doesn't mean they are indestructible. After a few hours they become uncomfortable but that is expected for over the ear headphones.
Summary: These headphones are awesome I'd defiantly recommend them to anyone. Bottom line is don't be a dip $h&% and throw your stuff around, or if you are ...
Summary: These headphones are awesome I'd defiantly recommend them to anyone. Bottom line is don't be a dip $h&% and throw your stuff around, or if you are a dip $h&% like me buy them at Best Buy and spend the extra 40 bucks to get the two year warranty and you wont have to worry about it, the warranty covers you if they break.

BEAT-i-ful
by zepolva on September 22, 2010
Pros: This headset is definitely hits the mark with very accurate reproduction. Consistent and lively tonal quality around the lows and mids. Anyone can produce squeaky, weak and incomplete sound be it for earbuds or on-ear phones
Cons: Now, the cons.... few and far between. Structurally the black on-ear were kinda creaky and yesterday snapped in half on the over the head arm thing only after 4 months of use. I picked up the (red) branded model of the BEATS in place of them.
Summary: I usually dont take the time to do a write up on a product but in this case was definitely deserving. This is a quality product. I spend alot of ...
Summary: I usually dont take the time to do a write up on a product but in this case was definitely deserving. This is a quality product. I spend alot of time on Pandora and work away in my cube doing design work so comfort, design and distinct sound quality are all delighter factors for me. I WAS an ear bud user but after a while the buds do start to irritate your ears. Over the ear for extended use is the way to go and the BEATS are the way to get there. I have tried SONY's self-acclaimed noise cancellers (jank!), Bose in-ear buds (just a bunch of hype!), and Skull's (really bunk!).....The BEATs are a great price performer and pound for pound are now my most prized device that I use from day to day. Thanks Dr. Dre!

Very good set of headphones with great sound!
by semperfi1924 on June 7, 2010
Pros: This is very nice compact set of headphones fit that can be easily folded up and stored, meaning they are light and small.
The amount of bass coming from these headphones is very nice.
For me, it plays the highs and lows, and they all sound crisp.Cons: The only con I found with these is that after a while the heaphones get a little uncomfortable, but only after a couple hours of use, which is understandable, and can be found in most over the ear cans.
Summary: The quality of playback on these headphones are very good quality. I have read reviews of the headband snapping, well maybe you should not manhandle a pair of $200 headphones, ...
Summary: The quality of playback on these headphones are very good quality. I have read reviews of the headband snapping, well maybe you should not manhandle a pair of $200 headphones, and well mine have not broken on me. Just treat them right.
Also with the addition of the Control Talk it is a plus.
LASTLY. CNET talks about the bass taking up sound space and mudding up the sound, well if you learn to use the EQUALIZER on your ipod, it makes a huge amount of difference, and for hip hop songs you get bass but vocals are still good, and same for rock. See it seems like CNET just throws them on and doesnt try to do any fiddling around, which, a musician does, right?

Amazing sound, awful awful awful construction.
by derekcep on June 5, 2010
Pros: The sound is crazy awesome. Bass is wicked, clarity insane and comfortable as a lazyboy.
Cons: The construction is horrible. I put them on my head, went to take them off and they broke like and egg. Split right in half.
Summary: If you want good sound for a limited amount of time by them, otherwise don't waste your time or money.

Sound Great....Built Horribly
by moebob24 on April 19, 2010
Pros: Amazing sound, cool sleek design
Cons: Construction is absolutely enraging, my girlfriend and I both had a pair and they broke within 1 week of each other at the exact same spot which is right above the hinge . My pair broke exactly 4 months to the day after I bought them.
Summary: These headphone sound amazing but NO ONE should buy them. I have read countless reviews saying word for word the exact same thing I am saying in my review. I ...

I can't tell you how enraged I am about this. I am currently on the phone waiting for customer support, it has been 30 mins and I haven't even talked to anyone yet.

Great Sound, Brake very easily!

Pros: The sound quality is fantastic
They look good and come with a nice case to store them in

A little expensiveSummary: Do not waste your money on these, although they sound and look great, they are very cheap and they broke only 3 months into owning them, and when i went ...
Summary: Do not waste your money on these, although they sound and look great, they are very cheap and they broke only 3 months into owning them, and when i went to replace them they said it was not covered under warranty. Monster must re-design them so that they do not brake so easily.

I'm In Bass Heaven
by redsox2003 on January 24, 2010
Pros: Design, sound quality, bass, fold-up design, no batteries needed.
Cons: Feels a little bit uncomfortable on my ears, expensive, and they smudge pretty easily.

Summary: These headphones are great, even though they cost $179.99 they are worth it if you want great sound quality and even better bass. I love the look of the headphones themselves, very sleek and modern and they look like they were made with the highest materials. The fold-up design is also a great feature which makes for easy portability with the case. Unlike the Studios, these require no batteries since they don't have sound-canceling technology, but I've realized I don't need it because with the Solos you can barely hear anything with them on in the first place.
For my ears personally, the Solos don't fit perfectly. It feels like they are not aligned right so it annoys me a little bit. Also, even though I said it's worth it for $179.99, they are still a bit expensive. Lastly, the design smudges easily but Monster does include a wiping cloth with it if you ever want to clean it up.
All-in-all, these Dr. Dre Beat Solos are awesome headphones and if you love hip-hop like me these are certainly recommended if you really want to know what bass actually is! -
Best headphones I've owned.
by bchigh10 on January 22, 2010
Pros: extremely comfortable and very portable. not technically a noise canceling model but very succesful at doing just that. I prefer these over the Bose On Ear Headphones for the same price. (non noise canceling model)
Cons: Bass may be too high for some.
Price is a little high.Summary: These headphones have great sound quality. I prefer these over the Bose On Ear model -(non noise canceling). These aren't marketed as noise canceling headphones but they are ...

I usually dislike anything Monster related, however...
by Fedorafan on December 27, 2009
Pros: High Quality Sound.
Stylish and Compact.
In-line control is handy.Cons: Muddy sound at beginning and it'd be nice if they didn't leak as much sound.

Summary: Bottom line is I have fallen in love with these things. I work in the audio department of a massive electronics store. The folks from Monster came in one day spouting off about their new line of headphones that we would soon be getting. As mentioned earlier, I usually don't care for anything Monster, so I had my doubts. But one day we got the Solo Beats in and I decided it'd be worth a shot. I could always return them if I didn't like them and with an employee discount, it made this an easy purchase. ABSOLUTELY fell in love with these things the first day. The sound quality was a little muddy at first (just like some of the other reviews had stated), but that quickly worked its way out. I've read that some have noticed some music genres don't sound as good as others but these things sound just fine to me no matter what type of music you listen to. I have everything from Dre to Sinatra to Social Distortion to Willie Nelson on my iPod and it all sounds great.
I also like the smaller size and their ability to 'breakdown' and be stored away. I didn't think I would use the in-line volume and iPod control that much, but it is a great added bonus. These may not compare to some of the Sennheiser's and Shure's on the market but I don't think too many of your average listeners will really know/care about the difference. I have used both of those brands in broadcasting and in recording and know the quality they bring. These headphones don't have the same sound as those, but at the same time, these were quite a bit less expensive than the last pair of Senn's I had bought.
My only issues with these involves the amount of sound that can be leaked out at higher volumes and the fact that I've never really had a headphone that had to break in. Neither of which are big deals. The sound quality got substantially better within the first couple of hours of play and these things do a pretty good job of noise suppression...about the best one my expect with an on-ear headphone.
At the end of the day, I really am enjoying my Solo Beats. If you're looking for a different set of headphones to enjoy your music with, you're not going wrong with these.
