Motorola H780 Bluetooth headset (brushed metal) price range: $54.99 - $99.99

The good: The Motorola H780 is a simple Bluetooth headset with a comfortable fit and decent echo cancellation. It also has multipoint technology that lets it connect to two devices simultaneously. Plus, it has a rated talk time of 7 hours.
The bad: The audio quality on the Motorola H780 is a little on the harsh and tinny side, and we would've preferred a more natural-sounding voice.
The bottom line: The Motorola H780 has a simple design and comfortable fit with good, but not great, audio quality.
Motorola has been touting its CrystalTalk noise-cancellation technology for a while now, first in its own handsets and most recently in its latest line of Bluetooth headsets. Its current star headset is the Motorola Pure H15, which we've reviewed already, but if you wish to save a little for a less sexy model, Motorola is offering the Motorola H780. It still has that CrystalTalk technology, but is much more business-like in appearance, and has more talk time as well. While we were not completely blown away by the audio quality, we still gave the H780 marks for its noise suppression and comfortable fit. The Motorola H780 is available now for $99.
The Motorola H780 has a pretty utilitarian design. It is rectangular and blocky, measuring 1.9 inches long by 0.7 inch wide by 0.5 inch thick, and comes in either carbon fiber or brushed steel. On the front is a round Call button followed by one of two microphones in a vertical stripe of perforated metal. This external microphone is to cancel out background noise. At the end of the microphone is a tiny Noise Cancellation button, which you can use to toggle that noise-canceling microphone on or off. On the right spine is the volume rocker and power switch.
We had no problems with most of the controls--they were sufficiently raised above the surface and easy to press. Our only problem was the tiny Noise Cancellation button, but we don't think you should be toggling that off anyway. We also liked having a dedicated power switch, so that it's easier to conserve the headset's battery life when not in use. The charger jack is on the top of the headset while the LED indicator is at the bottom.
Flip the headset over and you'll find a small in-ear earpiece clad in a rubber ear cushion, as well as a thin and flexible plastic ear hook. The H780 comes with a variety of different-size ear cushions, in case the one out of the box doesn't fit your ear. We found that it fit quite comfortably; it sits just outside the ear canal, and the thin ear hook made it possible for us to wear it while wearing glasses. It should be noted that the ear hook is not optional; it's needed for stability and security.
Features of the H780 include the typical answering, receiving, rejecting, and ending calls, last number redial, call mute, and the ability to transfer calls from the headset to the phone and vice versa. It has multipoint technology, meaning it can connect to two devices simultaneously. It also has a battery status indicator.
Like with other Motorola headsets, the Motorola H780 has automatic pairing when it's first turned on. We managed to pair it with both the Apple iPhone 3G and the LG Lotus. We made several calls to both landline and cell phone numbers. Each time, our callers could tell we were using a headset, and said we sounded rather harsh, with a tinny or robotic-sounding voice. We then tried using our headset outdoors and in the car. In those situations, callers said they couldn't hear a lot of background noise, and we were impressed by how well the noise cancellation worked. When we toggled the noise cancellation off, it was clear how much difference it made. So, while the H780 doesn't have the clearest audio quality, it does cancel out a lot of environmental noise.
The Motorola H780 has a rated battery life of 7 hours talk time and 8 days standby time.

Speaker that goes into the ear is uncomfortable
by escoop on September 22, 2009
Pros: Sound quality was fine. Fit over the ear was fine.
Cons: Speaker that goes into the ear is uncomfortable.
Summary: Bluetooth headsets that rest on the ear but don't actually have a part that goes INTO the ear are more comfortable.

About the best that there is!
by chooch331 on May 11, 2009
Pros: Good audio quality and volume, comfortable fit, long battery life, good choice for wearers of eyeglasses.
Cons: Can't think of any -- but if pressed, the plastic ear hoop seems easy to break if you're not careful and you're sunk if you loose the rubber ear bud. I'm looking to buy replacements to keep on hand.

Summary: I am an older guy who wears glasses and has hearing difficulty but not yet ready for a hearing aid. So, I need an earpiece with good volume and small hoop for an ear hook. This mid-priced model does the trick very well. I don't understand the editor's issue with poor audio quality.
I use this earpiece in multipoint mode with a Nokia 6555 and LG 400 series "Go Phone" both on AT&T network and both phones pair together well. The volume in this earpiece is good such that I can hear the low LG ring tone that is set to the earpiece instead of the ringer like the Nokia does.
Be sure to take Moto's advice and try ALL THREE of the rubber earbuds. I thought I was "medium" but "small" actually fits better with the best sound quality and volume. I can hear it fine in quiet rooms with the phone bluetooth volume on its lowest setting! -
Now we're getting close to perfection.

Pros: Light weight, Excellent noise canceling, power on/off button, comfortable, great sound. Multipoint pairing.
Cons: The ring volume from the headset is way, way too low. In fact, I missed several calls because I could not hear my phone ring through the ear piece when I was in my car with the radio on.
Summary: I loved this headset !!!! Except for the fact that when ur phone rang, u could just barely hear it ring in ur earpiece. Anything above a whisper in a room, ...

Man, Motorola was so close on this one. The noise canceling was awesome. I was standing in a direct head wind testing it with a buddy, and said he couldn't even hear the wind.
Love the little power on/off switch. great battery life, sound, etc.
It just puzzles me with these designers, how it seems like they go one step forward and then two steps back.
If ur fine with just hearing ur phone ring and not the earpiece, I would highly recommend this. And it's Multipoint to boot !
But I missed calls because I couldn't hear the ringer in the earpiece. That was enough for me to take it back -
Excellent Overall Product

Pros: Loud Volume, Comfortable FIt, Light Weight, Easy to Use Sync Feature, Dummy Proof on/off switch
Cons: Staticy at Times, Unnatural Voice Quality
Summary: One of the Best Blue Tooths I have used so Far and can't beat it for the price considering there are so many bad sets on the market.

Great buy for 1st time Bluetooth user
by glenn1746 on December 29, 2008
Pros: Cool design, ear bud tips great for small and large ears, ear clip is comfortable, device is lightweight, buttons easy to find and press, setup with my Black Jack 2 and PS3 are easy, headset pairs with no problems, good range
Cons: Some static, complaints of distant sounding voice, some echo when using with PS3 (probably PS Network), limited volume
Summary: Let me start off by saying that I am NOT a tech-person. I am an average user. I just want my stuff to do what it is supposed to! That ...
Summary: Let me start off by saying that I am NOT a tech-person. I am an average user. I just want my stuff to do what it is supposed to! That is exactly what this headset does!
Overall, this headset does exactly what I need it to do. I use it when playing PS3 for chat and with my BlackJack 2 cell phone. I will also be using it for an online masters degree course this spring.
The headset is lightweight, stylish, and comfortable. I have small ears (iPod buds hurt after a short time) and the smallest ear tip fits great! The selection of 3 tips is great for me. Also the ear clip is discreet, comfortable and does not interfere with glasses.
While in use, minor static is present, but it is comparable to a well-received radio station. I have owned this headset for a few days, I left a test message on my landline phone and it sounded like every other message I receive. My wife said that I sounded distant on a recent windy day. Audio is slightly tinny, but it does not affect caller audibility. Also there is some echo when I use it with my PS3 chat, but that is probably attributed to the PS network. I have not had this issue while using my cellphone.
The headset pairs very easily once setup (which is also easy). Once I turn on the headset, it instantly pairs with my BlackJack and PS3. Setup was very easy with a small guide that tells you exactly how to get started. It is a fold out 8-10 page 'poster'. There is no bluetooth bible here, just a few instructions and that's it!
This headset has been great for me so far. I have no complaints about usability, comfort, or quality. The price good as well. If you are a first time user and only considering more expensive headsets (like Jawbone), you may reconsider. I was afraid that I might get stuck with a dud and get burned. Instead, I am completely happy with my purchase and spent 1/2 the price.
