The good: The Plantronics Voyager 835 is a discreet and comfortable Bluetooth headset with excellent sound quality. It also has Multipoint, which lets it pair with more than one device at a time.
The bad: The Plantronics Voyager 835 doesn't have extra ear tip sizes, and has a rather boring design.
The bottom line: The Plantronics Voyager 835 is a great choice for mobile professionals looking for a business-like headset that does its job well.
Plantronics has long been known for its quality Bluetooth headsets, not only because of fit and feel, but also because of its patented AudioIQ technology that helps reduce background noise. However, with more advanced headsets such as the BlueAnt V1 in the market, it needs to amp up its offerings to remain competitive. Enter the Plantronics Voyager 835. It's the first ever Plantronics headset with dual microphones, which help in enhancing your voice while reducing background noise. This results in excellent audio quality, and it's indeed one of the best headsets in Plantronics' lineup. The Voyager 835 is available for $119 MSRP, but its street price may drop to about $99.
The Voyager 835 is aimed at mobile professionals, and its design reflects that. Measuring 2.1 inches long by 0.6 inch wide by 0.4 inch thick, the Voyager 835 has a long slender profile that is not at all showy. Wrapped in black plastic, the Voyager 835 is downright inconspicuous with its rather boring business-like design.
On the front of the Voyager 835 is the multifunction button in the form of a recessed dot toward the top of the headset. Underneath it is an LED indicator, followed by a recessed strip that also houses the first of two microphones. The second microphone is located at the bottom of the headset. The volume buttons are on the right side, and the charger jack is on top. We had no trouble pressing the buttons, though we did think the volume keys are on the small side.
Flip the headset over and you'll find a rubberized ear tip as well as a flexible translucent plastic ear hook. The ear tip is meant to fit snugly in the ear, with the tip acting as an anchor within the outer folds of the ear. It takes a little while to fit it in, but once we did, it did stay there quite securely. According to Plantronics, this snug fit leads to all-day comfort, but we did wish there were different sized ear tips for a more customized fit. We should also note that the ear hook is not optional, but you can twist it around to fit either ear.
As far as features go, the Voyager 835 is pretty basic. You can answer and end calls by tapping on the multifunction button, and you can also check the battery power by holding down both the multifunction button and the volume down button for about 2 seconds. (The more the red LED flashes, the less battery it has.) The Voyager 835 supports last number redial and voice-activated dialing as long as your phone supports it. It also has the capability to transfer calls from the headset to the phone and vice versa. One great feature is that the Voyager 835 supports multipoint pairing, meaning it can connect to two Bluetooth devices at one time.
We tested the Plantronics Voyager 825 Bluetooth headset with the Apple iPhone 3G. Thanks to the Quickpair process, the headset goes automatically into pairing mode the first time it's turned on. Call quality was very good, because of the aforementioned AudioIQ technology and the dual microphone digital signal processing that eliminates background noise--one microphone captures surrounding noise while the other microphone focuses on your voice. Since the mics are omnidirectional, we didn't need to properly align the microphones to our mouths like with the Callpod Dragon V2, which is a good thing.
The addition of Windsmart technology is also very helpful in windy situations. We tested ours in front of a regular desktop fan, and were still able to communicate to our callers, albeit with raised voices. On their end, callers said our voice sounded loud and clear, but with a slightly tinny and hollow quality. That said, overall sound quality was still quite impressive.
The Plantronics Voyager 835 has a rated talk time of 5 hours and a standby time of seven days. It comes with an in-car charger plus an AC charger.

Excellent for using several hours a day, average volume
by crashbam on October 10, 2009
Pros: Great for using 6 hours or more a day. I use this for all business and personal and have never heard a complaint from listeners. None can tell if I'm driving, or outside thank s to noise reduction so play hookey with it! Lost it and getting another
Cons: Volume is much better than several ones I have used in the past, though slightly less volume than the 655 (which can be so loud that it hurts). Earpiece is not the tightest fit, but it never falls off thanks to the hook.
Summary: Excellent for my work and play, using it many hours a daily. So comfortable that I forget I have it on and people always remind me, "Are you on a ...
Summary: Excellent for my work and play, using it many hours a daily. So comfortable that I forget I have it on and people always remind me, "Are you on a call?". I lost mine and am replacing it immediately. I have backup BT headsets (plantronics 655) which are acceptable, but this one is my absolute favorite out of the 6 I have owned. There may be better ones, but I am taking no risk or chances in ending up with an inferior BT headset. Can't wait to get it back.

Terrible Sound Quality
by billymac on August 10, 2009
Pros: This is a comfortable headset, call quality on my end was good, but...
Cons: TERRIBLE sound quality for people on the other end. People said it sounded "echoy" and like I was "far away", and could I "get on a land line".
Summary: I am embarrased to be heard with this level of sound quality. I thought everything was great on my end, but everyone I talked to on the phone complained about ...

Very disappointed
Pros: I liked the fit, style (or lack thereof) was fine for me.
Cons: I bought one Friday night, tested it over the week-end and it had very poor sound quality. I brought it back to the store & they agreed. I exchanged for another yesterday and the reception was even worse. Maybe they got a bad batch in.
Summary: The sound was echo-y, hollow and the voices on both ends of the conversation were constantly breaking up. The store personnel agreed. My personal tests were done in quiet environments. ...

simple, sleek, and looks professional.
by kevin-chan on May 14, 2009
Pros: Very lightweight and requires minimum care.
One button takes care of almost everything.
Two easy to access volume keys.
Small and hardly noticable. My mother states that she barely felt a thing.
One hell of a mother's day present.Cons: It feels as if it is about to fall off (according to my mother).
It doesn't feel quite secured, because we barely felt the weight.Summary: For Canadians, this goes for $119.99 CAN, but you can try and haggle to get a few chits knocked off, which in my case, I got $40 knocked off, ...

Summary: I wish that I could like this headset, and at first I did. After less than a week, I have had trouble talking to people with this headset, and I find it rather unacceptable that this class of headset would have these problems. If this were a $30 headset, I would have a little more forgiving for it, however, I have gotten better performance out of the $30 ones rather this one costing me over three times that much. I am returning it and getting a Jawbone 2.

Nice Headset
by mlschmelder on February 11, 2009
Pros: Works as advertised. Fits better than any other headset I've had. Bothered my one ear, so I easily switched to the other. Wear it most of the day with no problems. Noise cancelling works fine.
Cons: It's just not the coolest looking headset around...
Summary: Well worth the buy!

Needs a mute button...
by Sammy2368 on December 16, 2008
Pros: Great sound. Secure fit. Good battery life.
Cons: NO MUTE BUTTON!!! Every BlueTooth headset should have a mute button. That's the whole point of "handsfree". How safe is it if you have to fumble through your phone options while driving to mute and unmute your phone?

Summary: THe 835 came in the mail today. I was looking forward to trying it since I seem to have an unusual ear/head/face to fit BT headsets. I currently use a Jawbone and tried & returned the Jawbone2 because the VAS couldn't rest comfortably against my cheek/jawbone. I seem to try a new BT headset every six months. My Jawbone is showing wear.
First impressions are that the 835 is a keeper.
The only negative about the 835 is the lack of a micro-USB to USB charging cable. It comes with an AC charger and a 'bonus' auto charger. I would trade both for a micro-USB to USB charging cable.
I guess I'll have to order one separately. Because of the form factor I guess the mini-USB wouldn't work, but having to use a micro-USB to USB cable is almost as bad as a proprietary one. -
Sending me a THIRD 835 Voyager Replacement
by jhwalk51 on February 26, 2009
Pros: Great Sound

Summary: Regretably, Plantronics is having to send me a THIRD replacement headset. The intermittent Standby light (suppose to blink every ten seconds) has not worked on the last two brand new units. This is the most fuss I have had from a new Blue Tooth Headset. Why am I not giving up? Great sound, great pickup at a distance. Plus, Plantronics is being very generous. I was in the car last evening and a relative kept saying that I was "breaking up". This was a long a stretch of highway that I travel often with good cell phone reception. I don't mind the so call "boring" look. I didn't buy it for a fashion statement. However, I do expect a fully functioning unit. The verdict is still out on the 835 Voyager. Perhaps the "third headset" will be a "charm".
I have been told several times "I can't hardly hear you." Other times, with the same people, "sounds fine". These test are in the same location. However, the most frustrating thing has been this. Plantronics has sent me THREE 835 Voyagers. Why? None of the three units has a Standby Blinking LED light -- as the documentation asserts. I have spoken to their tech support over a three week period and the standard response has been to send out another unit. Now there is some question whether or not Plantronics excluded this feature from the 925 Discrovery and 835 Voyager. I can't get a straight answer. As you know a Blinking Standby light allows one to know if the unit is on or not. I like the 835 Voyager for all the reasons given in the Reveiw above, but it is very frustrating speaking with Plantronics tech spt. when no one seems to be more helpful than the enclosed documentation.

Updated on Mar 5, 2009Plantronics Came Through! They finally discovered that the 825 Voyager does not have a Standby LED light. They were apologetic and thank me for being persistent enough to bring this to their attention.0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
