by KCENOTAPH on February 12, 2011
Pros: Comfortable...sound is excellent...mic is really sensitive..surround effect works well..
Cons: Lot of wires..but you can deal with it because you want the sound these headphones provide.

Summary: I wanted headphones for PS3 as I love to play BFBC2 and CODMW2...these headphones deliver. I wasn't really convinced any of the wireless sets were worth the money and I was using some AKG ATH M50's for headphones...as you can imagine those had killer sound..even without surround they still had good directional dimensioning and clear crisp deep sound...no chat capability led me to look around for a headset that was capable of that...Turtle Beach for the most part makes good stuff and I can say this was a great purchase. I like to sit about 12-13 ft away from my 55'' tv and the AKG cord was only about 10ft...the DPX21 will allow up to 15ft range. Set up is easy if you have any familiarity with your game console and can follow instructions. The wires can be a bit cumbersome, but you'll get used to it. Having the controls for chat/game volume and the bass/surround effect at your fingertips is fantastic. The sound is excellent..good clarity and reasonably deep lows make it really immersive for any game. The ability to turn down the chat volume is a welcome feature..waaay too many people do not realize how sensitive their mics are and you are forced to listen to their kids screaming/ outdated annoying music choices/cro-magnon cursing..as well as the mouth breathers out there. The surround effect is cool, but most of the time just leave it off as it can overexpand the sound field and actually make it less accurate as far as locating sounds/footsteps etc..Experiment with it as this I'm sure is an individual taste feature..The head set itself feels very light and comfortable for longer game sessions..as for quality of build..I'd suggest handling it with reasonable care as it's not something I'd consider rock solid..Buy it and try it...I highly recommend it.

Summary: My wife bought me these and the Tritton AX Pro headphones to try for my birthday. I tried these first and I was impressed. I turned on Uncharted 2 multiplayer and you really can hear everything that goes on. I'm not convinced that they really improve your skills, but I was amazed at all of the music and sounds that I had never heard through the TV speakers. I've got a baby at home, which is why I got these instead of a surround system. The microphone works fantastic and it was really easy for me to differentiate other players talking at once, something I could never do through the TV speakers. Then I tried the Tritton AX Pros and they were good, just not as good as these. The sound on the AX Pros was just as good as these, but the volume and bass were weak plus the headphones felt stiff and cheap.
Get these - they're cheaper, louder and have really nice bass.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Very disappointed!
by sel1977 on May 16, 2012
Pros: Sound was great when they were first used.
Cons: I spent $150 for these at Best Buy and the game sound stopped working after 2 mos. Best Buy won't exchange them because it is over 30 days from time of purchase.
Summary: I will never purchase a Turtle Beach product again!

Great headset... for a few months anyway
by ryanlingle on December 12, 2011
Pros: 1. Great sound quality and cool surround effect
2. Adjustable boom mic is nice
3. Pretty comfortable for a few hours of gameplay
4. Separate settings for game and voice volume are extremely handyCons: 1. Feedback!
2. Gets a little uncomfortable during long gaming binges (perhaps a hint to go read a book?)
3. Cheap build--a small piece of something has broken off inside the headset
4. Headset no longer works after only 9 monthsSummary: First off, I am very meticulous about the care and storage of my equipment. I enjoyed the headset for a while, but I noticed after a couple of months that ...
Summary: First off, I am very meticulous about the care and storage of my equipment. I enjoyed the headset for a while, but I noticed after a couple of months that a small piece had broken off inside the left ear, where the mic is connected, and it rattles when I move. I didn't mind much because it proved to be no serious problem.
The big problem is that I've only had the headset for 9 months, and the sound has suddenly stopped working. The mic still works, but no game volume can be heard. I've reset the whole setup, checked the volume settings, switched games, and still nothing. The headset has been stored carefully, never dropped, system settings have never changed. $130 is too much to pay for a headset that won't even work for a full year.
All in all, this headset is still recommended, as long as you hang on to your receipt/warranty info. Be prepared for a frustrating customer service experience should the same thing happen to you. -
A horrible scam and a waste of money
by D41337 on December 18, 2011
Pros: None to think of
Cons: The USB port only supports up to 2 channel 48Khz Audio
The 3.5mm audio jack only supports 2 audio channels
The "DSS" actually degrades audio quality
It is physically impossible to receive true 7.1 surround sound audioSummary: So today as a birthday present my parents gave me these...

I'm always on ventrilo, talking to my friends, and gaming so it only makes sense as up to this point the only thing I've ever used is a crappy mic that came with the rosetta stone software. So when I first received this present I thought it would be great; however, I was a little skeptical of the "Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound" the headset claimed to have. I've also come to consider myself a bit of an audiophile over the years of shoveling out hundreds of dollars on sound cards speakers and various cables and I was curious if the headset could live up to my expectations.
So when I first got them, as I said, I was a little skeptical but I took them back to my room I plugged them in and after messing with about 5 audio leveling dials I got everything working and was quite content. I looked at the windows audio settings and the microphone offers no higher/better sampling rate than that of the of the free mic that came with the rosetta stone software. Whatever, get on vent. I setup vent to use the headset. Now one of the things this headset does that seems pretty interesting is that it actually has 2 audio channels or two sets of speakers. It has one from the USB port and one from the 3.5mm audio jack that come with it. This enables you to listen to voice on one and have "Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound" on the other. In addition to this there is a little device that comes with the headset that goes in between the headset and the computer...
The dolby surround sound processor. And what does this due? "The Ear Force DSS 5.1/7.1 channel Dolby surround sound processor transforms any stereo analog headset into full, immersive surround sound" So to save more time writing this than I want to right now because I'm pissed off. Turtle beach fudgeed up, this doesn't work... and here's why.
The USB port that runs into the surround sound processor gives it power and then directly forwards whatever USB device is plugged into it into the computer. It's USB port serves no greater purpose that to act like a usb HUB and keep the slot that it takes up open. The only thing the "Dolby Surround Sound Processor" does is take whatever input you put into it and turn it into a 3.5mm analog signal with some "magic" in it. Now if you connect a 3.5mm stereo audio jack into this device, that's all fine and dandy. You just dropped the money on it's $89.95 USD (at the time of writing) price tag to throw some "magic" in your stereo signal. But if you're a stickler for audio quality; the best part is, if you plug a fully digital 7.1 optical toslink cable into this device (which it does support) you just payed $89.95 USD to degrade your FULLY DIGITAL SIGNAL into an ANALOG PIECE OF GARBAGE with some "MAGIC" sprinkled on top. So here's to Turtle Beach and Dobly (who allegedly made this device) making you ACTUALLY PAY THEM MONEY for this device that will degrade your audio signal/quality...
Now in the perfect world had turtle beach not fudgeed this up and done this right...
The USB cable would link to an actual USB sound card that does 7.1 surround sound processing and sends it directly to the headset via the headsets USB cable, since this crappy black "Dolby Surround Sound Processor" sits in between these two devices anyway, you might as well have a device that actually does something useful. And while that goes on, you would allow the 3.5mm audio jack to plug into the systems sound card and be assigned to be used for voice chat since voice is something that is usually handled through a mic (a mono input) and can be upscaled to a stereo input and no audio degradation occurs.
So the bottom line is, this is a giant scam and a giant wast of money for anyone who actually cares about audio quality. You will never get true 7.1 surround sound out of these and for everything the "DSS" does you might as well just buy the headphones (if you ever still want them, since I know I sure dont) I will be taking these back to the store shortly.0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
