Summary: After ISF calibrating the projector, it's still plenty bright and plays movies well. 1080p24 direct from HDDVD or Blu-Ray is fantastic. The HD80 doubles the frame-rate to 48fps, which is just how real movie theaters do it as well.
Even in a room with some ambient light, on a gray screen the ANSI contrast ratio was very acceptable on average movie viewing.
Bright modes make daytime viewing possible.
The built-in offset, however, makes installation challenging. You'd have to put it nearly on the floor, or right up against an 8-foot ceiling. 9-foot ceilings are best with a 8-inch drop-down tube, in order to ensure proper image position.
There is light spill from the lens housing but that can be over come with some electrical tape, which greatly increases perceived contrast.
Unfortunately the fan is very noisy compared to most PJs out there nowadays. I guess Optoma has erred on the side of caution after the old 720p early lamp death problems that plagued the HD79 and other 720p projectors they offered.
Overall, a great bang-for the buck entry-level 1080p DLP.
