The bad: Expensive; no HDMI inputs; no upconversion of analog video on HDMI output.

An absolutely amazing HTIB system!
by larrymcj--2008 on November 15, 2005
Pros: Component system sound with a HTIB size. Superior quality of workmanship. Unbelievable (until you try it) sound quality. Many more listed in the review.
Cons: A very all-inclusive, complex manual with a skimpy index that doesn't list the many items covered in the manual.
Summary: At age 60, but still a geek and ex-audiophile, I'm at the point in my life where I wanted to simplify things. Yes, my expansive component Home Theater system ...
Summary: At age 60, but still a geek and ex-audiophile, I'm at the point in my life where I wanted to simplify things. Yes, my expansive component Home Theater system was great...but it still required constant tweaking and manipulation...mostly just because all the features and capabilities there there...not because they actually needed adjusting.
We have two home theaters...the high end components of the primary one were recently stored away and replaced by a Bose Lifestyle 48, which is a very nice (and simple) system...but I needed something even more simple (and with only a 2.1 speaker configuration) for a 10x12 alcove area in our FROG for a private theater, where I didn't have room for rear speakers. Enter the Denon 301.
I lugged this thing home, all the while telling myself there was no way it would ever live up to my expectations, but since it was not optimally setup at the store for a decent demo...this was my only option.
From opening the box to being completely setup was maybe 15 minutes. In fact, it's packaged so well that unpacking it takes longer than setting it up. Default setting were all set to flat, so you have to tweak it to suit your tonal preferences, but that's a good thing.
I was absolutely blown away by the sound this tiny little system puts out. If you have it setup against a wall, with another wall reasonably close behind you, you're in for a real surprise...especially if you are a non-believer in virtual speakers. The left and right rear virtual speakers sound almost as if they are really there! Granted, this system is best suited for two, very friendly, people, as you have to be in the center of the sound field, but even outside of it the sound is great.
The remote: first one I've seen that is done right. All the controls you need to use a lot are on the front, and all the buttons you need occasionally are on the back behind a clever little door. Very cool, Denon!
I only have two (very small) nits about the system. First, the neon blue light that circles the power button is a bit too bright...thus distracting from your overall vision that should be focused on the TV. Second, the manual is VERY complex and all inclusive...but very few things are even mentioned in the index, so it's difficult to find answers to your questions without spending a lot of time thumbing through the manual.
I have this paired with an Hitachi 42HDX62 Director Series Plasma and I simply could not be happier. FWIW, this replaces a very expensive Klipsch speaker system). Thanks, Denon...for disproving that small HTIB systems are inferior. Yes, it's a bit expensive...but in the grand scheme of things...it is well worth it.40 out of 40 users found this user opinion helpful.

Nearly Perfect -- with one fatal flaw

Summary: There is much to love about this unit. We bought this unit for our bedroom, as we wanted something small but still sounds great for audio and video playback. Unfortunately, the movie audio playback leaves so much to be desired that we (regretfully) returned it.
The good.
The high-end audio playback was superb for such a small and affordable (compared to our main stereo) system. Great detail, but never harsh.
The mid-range was equally great. Movie converstaion was clear and understandable.
The HDMI output upconversion was also good. Not quite to the level of detail as our other player (a Sony DVP-NS90V), but very usable. No other player is required, leading to a very small visual footprint. [Note: while it has auto output select, for us it selected 480p output, which was not very impressive. After manually trying all choices, we found 720p the best. Make sure to try all choices.]
Nice feature set. While the iPod (and, in fact, any USB memory stick) at first felt like a gimick, my wife really liked it.
The bad.
There was absolutely no "presence", that is, the feeling from a good stereo that you are there. The low-end was missing. The "virtual surround" was pitiful. We tried everything: increased the subwoofer volume, increased the bass, even used a SPL meter. We could get the bass up, but there was still to presence, and it just made the mid-range muddy.
The manual also left a bit to be desired. Several typos, and many places in which the manual didn't explain what each feature did, but just detailed how to set it.27 out of 29 users found this user opinion helpful.

Best options of the higher end HTIB

Summary: I got this system since I have an apt. It was small HTIB. I didnt want to have to run a bunch of cables to have to take it down when I buy a house. Looked at Bose but the idea of putting all my music onto CD in MP3 format to put on the lifestyle system didn't make me happy. The two cons I mentioned are small to me but scored high on the agrivation factor. I have two degrees and the directions for HDMI were horrible. Maybe I should head back to school. IMPORTANT notes on the HDMI 1. there is sliding switch on the back that should be set to HDMI. 2. on the back of the remote in the seldom used button area is also a HDMI button this switches between 1080 and other outputs. I didn't really notice these in the manual untill 45min of messing with the general HDMI option. Other than that this system is working to the best of its capabilities.

I saw the movie "The Incredibles" it was phenomenal you really feel you have 5.1 system. the price is a bit expensive but I think its well worth it.I can not play certain CDs I am not sure why I am able to play those CDs in my car DVD player and standard DVD player but my Denon would not play them. If anyone may know why please respond. Otherwse I am a happy customer.

I like it, but.....

Summary: First the bad news. This player had to go back to Denon for an ?HDMI Output Fix? about 3 weeks after I bought it. When connected to my display by the HDMI connector and playing a DVD, the display would go black for about 2-4 seconds every 20-30 minutes while the soundtrack played without a glitch. The video would then return to normal. This happened consistently with every disc.
When the repair on a relatively new component has a name, you know it?s gotta be a known defect. Per the terms of their warranty, Denon shipped it back for free, but I ended up eating the cost of shipping it to them (~$30) to repair a flaw that they knew about when they sold me the unit. I?m a little steamed about that, plus the fact that I didn?t have use of my new $1300+ dollar machine for the two weeks it was in the shop! Shame on Denon! They should have communicated the problem to all the owners, issued a recall, expedited the repair and paid shipping and insurance both ways. I spoke with a Denon rep who told me that this problem was common but somewhat display dependent.
Now the good news. It has worked flawlessly since being repaired. Video output looks excellent on my 42 inch display. It?s still a little tempermmental when it comes to handling flawed discs, but that?s a problem for a lot of players?both cheap and expensive ones.
The sound quality is excellent. It possesses a strong, deep bass that sounds awesome on blockbusters. For music, the bass is balanced and the mids and highs have a nice presence. The soundstage soundstage is quite good for normal CDs and truly awesome on SACD and DVD audio. It?s hard to believe there are only two satellites and a sub.
This system also receives outboard digital audio signals over coaxial and optical cables. My TV has an optical output for HDTV, so now I can take advantage of some of the excellent Digital Dolby 5.1 audio on programs like Soundstage and Austin City Limits, ?The Tonight Show? and broadcast movies.
The remote is simple and straightforward, with the commonly used buttons nicely laid out on the front and the ?geek? buttons all hidden on the back behind a door.
Advantages:
Compact and attractive.
Very good sound quality from all sources
Very good video output quality with upconversion to 720p and 1080i
?Surround? sound without the surrounds and the accompanying mess of wires
Very easy setup
Excellent remote control
Disadvantages:
Not cheap
May need ?repaired? right out of the box to work properly?Denon is less than helpful when it comes time fixing this problem. Last time I checked, they still hadn?t placed an advisory on their owner?s site.
Overall, I like this product a lot, but I am going to deduct four points for Denon selling a product with a known defect and not publicizing it to owners or covering all of the costs of repair (including shipping).5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I am having a problem with my Denon which I bought last week. on average, every 30 minutes or so, the picture cuts to black for 5-10 seconds. The sound remains, but suddenly there is just nothing on my tv screen.
I'm taking this back to where I bought it because of the glitch. Hoping it was just a faulty model.5 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: We got this system based off the reviews from Cnet's editors and watching the demo video. This system looks like it is the best of its class with all of its features like the options to listen to the radio, music cd's and the ease of connecting the ipod. At first we were very happy with the product once we opened it and got it running.
As we started watching dvd's for about 2 weeks we noticed that the picture would cut in and out for about 2 - 3 seconds but the sound would still be there. It got really annoying when you watch a movie then the pictures cuts out. We reported the problem to the store where we got it from and they gave us a new unit. The problem still happend. We tried 4 units and all of them had the same issue with the picture cutting in and out all using the HDMI setup. Now here is the interesting part. The problem stopped when we used the componet setup. All movies played with no interuption. The store where I got this unit told me that they have tried to fix the bug with some kind of firmware update. We got that unit and it worked for only 5 hours before it stopped working. Any dvd movie after that 5th hour would not load. The unit just spun down and stopped. We tried another dvd and the picture came out all scrambled and you couldn't tell what you were looking at. So we returned it and got our money back. We tried 4 units and they all stunk.
I think this unit would be great if it didn't have these problems. I mean if you are spending that much money you want it to work for at least year not a few weeks. I do hope Denon fixes the problem. I hope this helps anybody who is thinking of buying this unit.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Amazing HTIB

Summary: I have been planning to buy a new theater system for 9 months. I wanted separate compnents and big speakers but I just don't have the space. I liked the lookds of this system but just didn't know if I would be happy or not. I'm sure glad I gave it a chance. I read every review and article I could find regarding this HTIB.
I am blown away with how good this sounds. It sounds like a large stero and not like a HTIB.
I almost drove myself to insanity trying to decide what to buy. I also didn't have $3,000+ to spend on the system I originally had planned. I'll sum it up hopefully to make things easier for those of you looking for a new theater system. If you have a big house. lots of space and the cash to spend then I say go for separate components. But, if you are like me and live in an apartment with a smaller room then I say go with this Denon. I have had other HTIB's that were great for movies but they sounded muddy and cheap with music. This is not the case with the S-301. CNET is right on. It sounds as good with music as it does with movies.
The virtual surround is not as good as true 5.1 but it is close enough that I don't regret buying this. Besides cheaper 5.1 HTIB's aren't really great in surround anyway. Cheap plastic speakers and lower wattage than the fronts.
The Denon is solidly built and metal not plastic.
There has been alot of talk about HDMI issues but as far as I know this has been resolved. I purchased mine through Crutchfield. They always provide excellent service and they have new stock so shouldn't be a problem anymore.
I was quite worried about the sound this could produce because of the lower wattage ratings and the size of the speakers but it is very loud. The sound is also very crisp and clear. All sprectrums of the sound field are represented very well and blends together perfectly in my opinion. You can easily get an eviction notice by cranking this thing up if you live in an apartment.
Hopefully this review will help make the buying choice easier for some of you out there. I truly believe there is no other HTIB or 3-2-1 system out there than can touch this one for sound quality, features, and build quality. The S-301 is truely in a class all by itself.

HDMI Users Beware!

Summary: I have high hopes for this unit once I get one that actually plays HDMI-connected video without blackouts. These are 2-3 second gaps in the video (while the sound continues). Very annoying.
My unit has a build date of June 2006. Denon says that the units built on or after September 2006 no longer have the "HDMI Output Problem." We'll see. At first, Denon was trying to blame my HDMI cable, but since I use a 3' Monster (HDMI certified)that tactic didn't last long. Luckily, I purchased the unit at Crutchfield and, thus far, their customer service has been exceptional. They are tracking down a unit with a Sept. '06 build date or later. They even sent a UPS slip so I won't need to pay for shipping. Go Crutchfield!
I really hope to keep the unit. It's sound is awesome and the video (when working) is amazing. It's great to play the iPod through, but I would have liked the USB port to also accept JPEG images instead of just audio files. Seems silly that it doesn't since a zip drive is a great way to show pictures with friends.
If anyone is still having problems with Sept. '06 units, please comment. The build date is on the bottom of the player.
I purchased this unit over the BOSE 3-2-1 because it was HDMI compatible, so it's ironic that this is what's causing me problems. The prices appear to be dropping, so it makes me wonder what Denon's plans are for the future of the S-301. Perhaps it will be replaced by a true HD DVD system.Updated
Just to conclude on my experience....
Crutchfied was awesome and sent me a new unit (at their expense). However since it's build date was July 2006, the HDMI blackouts continued. I sent the unit back to Denon (buying a box, paying for shipping)for a hardware fix and they got it back to me in 16 days. The unit now appears to work as advertised.
Bottom line: make sure the build date on your unit is September 2006 or later.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I made my decision to purchase the Denon S-301 through the reviews on CNET.com. It got rave reviews and I have been unimpressed with overpriced and underperforming BOSE systems. NEVER waste your money on Bose!
I was impressed with this system the moment I picked up the box. It is quality built and very solid; heavy would be a good description. Each component was nicely finished and did not feel "cheap" as other systems do. It was easy to set-up and the HDMI output made hooking it up to the HDTV a snap (try www.monoprice.com for excellent cables on par with WAY overpriced Monster Cables for a fraction of the price).
After setting it all up I watched King Kong and I was very happy with the upconversion process. I set it at 1080i and could barely tell the difference in the picture quality as compared to bonafide HD broadcasts. I have read some people had problems with the HDMI output on this device, but I have yet to experience it (knock on wood).
Everything sounds great on this little system. From standard FM radio to CD's it all sounds excellent! I love the fact I can plug my USB "thumb" drive directly into the front of this system and play my MP3's! If I ever get an Ipod it is ready for that too. Obviously, this system has a phantom 5.1 surround sound and does not sound AS good as a true 5.1 system, but I do not miss all the clutter around my room at all. The difference, to me, was not all that great to justify the additional room clutter.
I did wish this system had additional HDMI inputs instead of just a single output. It would have made hooking up future devices a little bit easier. In addition, it has only one TOSlink input (optical audio) along with several digital coaxial inputs. Most of the devices I use have optical, so I do not know why they only included one.
While setting up this system is fairly easy, "tweaking" it for maximum performance is not. The manual is not very descriptive of all the settings and functions the S-301 offers. Not many of the settings are "common sense" and do need some explanation. One of the things I figured out early on was without using the HDMI cable and using Component video cables the device would not upconvert to 720p or 1080i, which is important to any HDTV owner. I researched some of the functions online and was able to navigate it after some time. These are minor complaints as I would probably have with any system, but I thought it would be fair to voice them.
This is an expensive Home Theater in a Box, but I think it was worth the additional money. The other systems do not compare to this one, so try to scrape some extra cash up and take the plunge with the Denon S-301 as it does not get any better than this!Updated
Well, I thought I was in the clear in regards to the HDMI problem many other users were talking about, but I was wrong. Approximately every 50-60 minutes the screen goes "black" for about 1-2 seconds while the audio is still playing. While it is not overly bothersome it is still annoying if the "blip" happens during a good scene in the movie. I will call Denon and see if there is a fix yet....Updated
I called Denon about the HDMI defect and I was referred to another representative who deals exclusively with the S-301. He advised Denon has found a fix for the problem. The main unit needs to be shipped to Denon, which is a bit of a pain, but it will remedy the situation and make this unit perfect!3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.
