Summary: I recently purchased this system, and it was the best purchase I've made in a while. This system contains the receiver, 7 speakers, AND a POWERED subwoofer. You can't beat getting those components for the price. It delivers 1000Watts of power so you'll never be short of cranking it up!
You can also configure the system to your approximate room size to get the decibel levels you want in each individual speaker.
If you are looking to get a home theater system that wont cost you an arm and a leg (like Bose), this is PHENOMENAL quality for a PHENOMENAL price. You won't regret it, I can promise you.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I use this surround system for my bedroom. It sounds great! Sure, I wish it had on-screen display, HDMI audio repeating, and played the video from the ipod, but come on, for the price how can anyone expect more. With this you get the quality of ONKYO, with multiple digital audio hook-ups, and 3 HDMI inputs. I can't imagine anyone realistically wanting more than this for the money. Great package ONKYO!

Summary: I am very happy with the system,it took me a few minutes to assing the conections and once i did that it was a breeze.ONKYO includes instructions and gives you a diagram being very specific on what cables to you and to which speakers to conect them to. on the other hand i was never inform about needing to buy an optical cable for the sound , they could have just use the full potential of the HDMI conections to give you more for your money. Overall i would recoment this system if u are looking to get beatifull sound from a system that cost half less than the competition and gives u good features.

amazing value amp, radio, 7.1 home theater speakers
by a49273648o on November 27, 2008
Pros: incredible value, under 400 with tax from b and h in nyc.
Cons: the box is big and heavy, but i had a friend with a truck
Summary: great sound, totally fills a small 15 x 11 room, the bass is amazing, my neighbors would hate me if i were less considerate.

the speakers are handsome, black wood veneer, easy to wire and place.
hdmi video goes through the box.
you need to buy optical or coax cable for digital audio, and hdmi cables from player to amp and amp to tv. but i got these cheap and quick online from monoprice. would have been nicer to have audio through the hdmi, but whatever for 20 bucks worth of cables.
the amp gets hot, so you need some space in your cabinet.
i haven't quite figured out surrond sound on movies, but i think that's probably an RTFM issue.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: After frying my brain researching the best HTIB systems for under $600, I finally bit the bullet and figured the 5100 was the best bang for the buck for what I needed. I had my mind set on the 6100, but decided that the 5100 was good enough especially for the price.
It lacks HDMI repeating, but I could make do with the system offers and spend the extra few bucks to get a couple HDMI cables and I already had an optical cable for sound. It would have been nice to utilize one less cable and gain true HD audio, but that's nothing an upgraded receiver won't fix.
The iPod dock is awesome. You can control the iPod through the receivers remote control which is neat and it's actually pretty painless. The sound quality is great, but it would've been cool to be able to watch videos off the iPod like the 7100. Again, nothing that an upgrade can't fix.
This is the system to go with if you don't mind not having TrueHD audio and using an extra cable for audio. There's three HDMI inputs which was perfect for my needs because I have a PS3, 360 and HD DVR connected to it. The black wood veneer is very attractive and blends in very nicely with the rest of my setup. The only gripe I have about it's aesthetics is that the components are HUGE!
Anywho, great system...great price!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Tough to Beat
by Mr_Combover on January 27, 2009
Pros: Crystal clear sound. The bass is deep and rich and makes for the best explosions you could hear outside of the theater. I heard it in my local CC, and was impressed, but when I set in up in my home (the Audessey set up was cake) it was perfect.
Cons: The surround cables were too short for my application, but what do you expect for the money?

Summary: This is my second HTIB system. The only reason I replaced the first one was because it was 12 years old and didn't have digital inputs. This one is almost too good to be true. I paid $429 and expected to sacrifice something for not buying something $1000 or more. No other system out there in this price range can even come close to the features and the quality. The included Audessey microphone was brilliant. For those unfamiliar, it has a microphone that listens to the speakers after they are set up and automatically adjusts them for your custom set up. No second guessing the volume in each speaker or the EQ levels. What a great idea. I didn't think it would be much of a selling point, but I can't say enough about it and I'm pretty picky about my audio. There are those who complained about the HDMI through instead of in, but who cares. spend $10 and by an optical cable. The sound is just as good if not better and it's not like one more cable is going to clutter it up back there anymore than it already is. I have a PS3 and run the HDMI out straight to my TV and the audio is optical straight to the receiver. The Blu-ray discs are phenomenal. I haven't played any games through it yet, but I assume the sound will be of comparable quality. The iPod dock is a bonus, but it is only so so. It sounds good, but I cant control it from the receiver or watch video. I didn't buy it for my iPod so it's no big deal. It also comes ready for Sirius Satellite, but It didn't matter to me. The sound quality is unlike anything that I have heard for less than $1800. As a matter of fact I would say the sound difference is negligible and cetainly not even close to being worth the extra $1300. I resisted the 7.1 because my movie room has an odd shape and is not conducive to an extra 2 speakers, but after i heard them I changed my mind. I plan on rolling them out temporarily now and then when I want the full effect. As for looks, they are very classy. I like the grill off "pro audio" look, but it looks just as sharp with the grills on. I got the black opposed to the silver because it is more appealing to me. Just my personal taste. I can't wait to get home tonight and watch another Blu-ray. I'm starting my guest list as we speak.

No HDMI audio therefore Is not true 7.1
by andylink on January 18, 2009
Pros: Good sound good price nice subwoofer power.
Cons: 7.1 is not true because of the limits of HDMI video only! Digital optical not not support 7.1 it only upconverts the signal from 5.1. No Dolby true HD. Not the greatest for Bluray
Summary: Good if you don't need HDMI audio (tru 7.1)

Summary: This is a great system. Hits hard and keeps running. Due make sure that there is plenty of breathing room for the receiver as it does run warm, like all Onkyos. Love the ipod connection, very cool to control from remote. The ability to upgrade single components as you go along won this one for me.
But, the HDMI pass through only was a bit of a disappointment, but hey can't really complain, just upgraded to the Onkyo TH-SR606 so I can use the HD audio.
Sounds good with music, movies and video games. Very crisp, not as crisp as some others out there, but for the price, can't really complain.
