First Look! Great price! Good quality! Easy setup!
by itasq on May 23, 2010
Pros: Good quality, fair priced! Easy to setup. Even comes with iPod dock.
Cons: No HDMI cable. No VGA input. Only 4 HDMI inputs, none of them in the front.

Summary: The ONKYO HT-S5300 Home Theater System is a great value. Before I say anything more, you need to know that I honestly have barely just unpacked it and set it up. I haven't had a chance to play with any settings what so ever. I was very impressed with the price and quality of the product. I thought that I was going to open the box and get speakers made from plastic, but instead got speakers made from press board with a nice grain. No it isn't mahogany, but for the price what do you expect.
RATING UPDATE: 4 STARS ****
When I first opened the box, it was daunting to me. Not in a bad way at all. But because I amazed at how much stuff I was getting. The system is logically packaged with receiver on top and everything else in the bottom. This made it very easy for me to transport home from the store as the box was too big for my volvo S80.
Setup was easy. I didn't even bother with the manual, except to find the center speaker output which I had over looked. Onkyo makes it easy for even non techies. All the speaker wires have different color pairs for each one of the seven speakers that you get. They come in two lengths, short for the front speakers and longer for the rear. Speaker connections are made with screw terminals for all speakers except for the sub woofer which uses the old RCA plug on its dedicated sub woofer input. The included iPod dock plugs into the UNIVERSAL PORT jack.
The only draw backs that I see so far is the lack of dedicated SERIUS satellite radio input, no VGA input and it could use at least one more HDMI input located on the front panel. I plan to get a new dSLR in the next month or so and I am sure that I will end up having to reach in the back to plug it in. I guess that I can just leave the cable plugged int the back and coil it up until I use the camera. The other reason why I would like to see at least one more, preferably two more HDMI ports, is because so many people I know have two game consoles not just one.
I haven't been able to listen to much material yet, except to watch AVATAR on blu-ray. The sound quality was vary clear and good. I have not done any adjustments at all, except for volume. I haven't even adjusted the output of the sub woofer yet. Once I have a chance to have played with it for a bit, I will be able to give better review of the sound quality which is of course what everyone wants to know.
Bottom line: I am over all very pleased with the product. If I was standing in the store today deciding if I should buy it or not knowing what I know now, I would buy it. I gave the product a good rating, not a very good or excellent because it would be unfair for me to give it a higher rating without having the chance to listen to the audio quality. If my suspicions are correct. I will be upgrading the rating from good to very good once I put the system through the paces of listening to music, movies and use the included iPod dock. I am not an audiophile, I just want great sound for a great price. This is one product that I feel is VERY fairly priced.
Updated on May 25, 2010
Sound quality is very good! After having a few days to listen to music and movies, I am very pleased with the system. To help me set the sub woofer output level to my liking, I put on a Nora Jones CD "Come Away With Me". This CD has great piano, strings, vocal and bass. I set the sub woofer's output to a level so the bass would be at the same level as the strings. I don't want the sub woofer to over power the rest of the music, I want it to compliment the music. I think I succeeded, because the first thing my wife said to me when she got home was how real it sounded.
Pro's: Very good sound, quality and value. You get a great receiver, sub woofer and speakers, they didn't skimp.
Con's: No HDMI port on the front of the receiver. No VGA port. No SERIUS Radio port. Speaker wire low quality and not long enough.
Summary: The system is a great buy. Don't waist your money on BOSE they are over priced. ThE system sounds better is less than half the price of BOSE.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

The best 7.1 HTiB you will find at this price
by Gadzooks79 on January 12, 2012
Pros: 4 HDMI Ports
Powerd Subwoofer

Stock speakers are left to be desired.

Summary: This HTiB is the best 7.1 HDMI 3D compatable you will find for people who want Theater quality sound on a budget. I researched different systems for months and you will find comparable 5.1 systems but you wont find 7.1. First thing you have to make sure it is set up correctly, no crossing wires is the most important and cannot be overstressed if you do not set this system up correctly it will over heat and shut off perhaps die and save yourself a huge headache by taking your time and doing it right.
Second is calibration, because it is a "budget" system it does not calibrate itself like other high end receivers so again you must take the time to calibrate ot to your taste. Personally I played around for weeks until I got the sound to where I wanted it. With the exception of the subwoofer which is actually pretty good the stockspeakers are ok at best and I strongly recommend upgrading at least the two front speakers I upgraded with a pair of yahmaha budget towers, they are not expensive and the difference is night and day. Onkyo also has a 7.1 speaker package which I would recommend taking a look at that is reasonable for the price.
The biggest problem I have so far is the pass through technology meaning when the receiver is off you can still watch tv playstion etc. I found that in order for the receiver to be on the TV must also be on and it is annoying when you just want to listen to the radio and save energy. Something else I found that with the PS3 if I am playing with out the surround on, the receiver still outputs a 5.1 to 7.1 signal to my TV meaning some of the sounds are dropped with your tv speakers an example when I play Batman Arkham city if I dont have the surrond on I cant hear all the charactors talking because the signal is still being divided into 5 channels I find that really annoying. Also I find that I have to cut on the receiver to get a signal from my cable box to my tv then cut the receiver back off if I dont need the surround.
All in all other than the suspect pass through, the very low grade wires that I strongly recommed upgrading day 1 and the stock speakers which you would probably eventually upgrade anyhow, this is the best you can get for this price. The first movie I popped in was The Dark Knight(of course) and let me tell you, get your popcorn because it will be like hearing it for the first time.
my set up is a 40 inch bravia,
PS3, onkyo HT-S5300, I replaced the two front speakers with the yahmaha budget tower speakers, 16 guage speaker wire.
I produce theatre quality that rocks the house and pisses off the neigbors
Have fun guys! -
A Great starter kit, but just a starter kit.
by Rukiri on February 5, 2011
Pros: Like any home theater this is just a starter kit, this comes with the SR-508 receiver and 7+1subwoofer speakers to boot. It has great sound and video quality and setup was a snap.
Having 2 speakers behind my couch was new as I had a 5.1 setup prior.Cons: This system will run hot but you should take into account the area you plan on setting it up and possibly having a fan is a good thing or central air.
The sound is decent but what do you expect with stock speakers? Most will just upgrade to polk.Summary: If you're looking for a 2010 Onkyo receiver with speakers you can't beat this deal for the price, you could get the SR-608 for the same price but ...
Summary: If you're looking for a 2010 Onkyo receiver with speakers you can't beat this deal for the price, you could get the SR-608 for the same price but no speakers. Also these speakers are not the best but hey most are going to upgrade any it's just the cheap bastards that won't upgrade at all.

Good home theater in a box for $400!!
by gspfunk on December 17, 2010
Pros: Onscreen menu, great features [including HDMI 1.4 (3-D) and HDMI passthru], and the subwoofer is good, especially if you're upgrading from a cheaper HTIB. Pricing is good - most places have it for around four hundred dollars shipped.
Cons: Surround speakers, excluding the sub, are weak. Would be better if they included the HTS-540 speakers w/ this setup instead. Not a good deal at retail cost.
Summary: If you currently have a HTIB setup, or a home theater setup that was thrown together from miscellaneous components, this is likely a good upgrade for you. If you have ...
Summary: If you currently have a HTIB setup, or a home theater setup that was thrown together from miscellaneous components, this is likely a good upgrade for you. If you have a setup from Polk, JBL, Infinity, Boston Acoustics, etc, then you might want to keep looking. I'm glad I got this setup, but I find myself wondering if some other surround speakers would make this system that much better.

Great sound, easy to set up.
by amomney on August 2, 2010
Pros: The on screen set up took me less than 10 minutes to optimize all speakers/sub.
Sound quality is phenomenal!
Bass is clear.
Look of the entire system is great.Cons: Needs a firmware upgrade.
NO auto-enhancing mic.
Manual need to go more in-depth and not use technical jargon.Summary: The Onkyo s5300 is a great receiver, sound is amazing.
I recommend you people reading this review to buy this product. You will never find a better all-in-one home theater ...Summary: The Onkyo s5300 is a great receiver, sound is amazing.
I recommend you people reading this review to buy this product. You will never find a better all-in-one home theater in a box.
It should on the other hand have an auto-setup microphone (Other sites say it does come with one but it does NOT). -
RECEIVER DIED AFTER 1 WEEK OF LIGHT USE.
by Glunk6000 on June 29, 2010
Pros: This is a feature rich package with a nice speakers and a powerful powered subwoofer. The sound was excellent except from the surrounds which were a poor match. Music sounded great at all volumes.
Cons: Receiver runs hot which most likely led to it's early demise in my case. If you must get this package, you should get an external quiet fan. As mentioned above, the surround speakers are very poor.
Summary: Comparing this to other HTIB's and receiver+speaker package combos, this deal seemed too good to be true, and I guess it was. The week I got it, I ...
Summary: Comparing this to other HTIB's and receiver+speaker package combos, this deal seemed too good to be true, and I guess it was. The week I got it, I spent most of the week setting it up and changing things around and really didn't even get to listen to it very much. I didn't even get to watch a movie. For it to fail after a week of pretty light use was very disappointing. If you must get this system, please get a quiet external fan. I planned to do that myself, but didn't get to. I planned to give Onkyo another chance and first see if Onkyo would replace the receiver only. "Take it back to the store," was their advice, and they were very rude about it. I took their advice and will be buying a competitor's system in the near future. On a positive note, 6th Avenue Electronics, took it back with no problem and were a big help in getting all 80lbs. of it shipped back free of charge.
