Great System for a Great Price!
by mjrachel on June 9, 2010
Pros: I figured there are REALLY cheap systems and REALLY expensive ones. I'm a Bose Fan myself but do not have the money to afford high quality speakers, & live in an apartment so I dont have the need for it either.
Cons: The Rear speakers are wireless but being new to surround sound, I had to figure out how to set up the system. You need a WIRELESS REAR SPEAKER KIT & A ROLL OF 20 GAUGE SPEAKER WIRE. A Minor Inconvienience.

Summary: The Panasonic is the best mid grade system. I bought mine at Best Buy and got two blue ray movies FREE with the special they were running. The video and audio quality is superb. I REALLY feel like I'm in a movie theatre sitting on a couch. After a few videos on You Tube about surround sound setup, I jumped into it. Setup was so easy anyone can do it. Oh yeah, the con, sorry so busy enjoying it now I almost forgot, You're going to need to buy a wireless rear speaker kit, mine was $109.99 Rocketfish brand but I saved 10% buy googling best buy coupons online so it was under $100. That also was easy to setup but needed to buy a roll of 20 gauge speaker wire as it sends the audio to a reciever in the rear of the room then you run the wires to the speakers up the back wall. A minor inconvienience for me, hopefully not for you since I just informed you. Oh yeah, the biggest con is theres no annoying people laughing and talking though my movie like at the movies...I'm REALLY going to miss THAT. Two thumbs up

Slow starting. Quit playing DVDs after 1 year.

Cons: Sound could be better.

Summary: After owning this system for 1 year, (long enough for the warranty to run out), it will not play DVDs at all any more, and I have to ship it off to get it fixed at my expense.
I'm currently looking for another brand blu-ray/home theater player to replace it.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Really good for the price.
by shyboyrico on December 21, 2010
Pros: Compact, and perfect for what I need now. The 2 optical inputs are great for my PS3 and Xbox, and it doesn't create another path for my HDMI to pass through and possibly lose resolution. The speakers are clear and the Sub is pretty loud for its size.
Cons: Although it's great for what I have now, It doesn't leave much to add in the future. I also wish it had a front panel USB and the ability to play AVI,MPEG4, and other video files I have on my computer.
Summary: It's a great starter system for someone who doesn't have a lot of money or room.

Not bad for $250
by asb_hb on August 10, 2010
Pros: Cheap, front facing "soundbar" mode, VIERA link, ipod dock, netflix
Cons: No HDMI inputs, smallish speakers, no WiFi, VIERA cast selection

Summary: This HTIB replaced my 3 year old BD-30 player connected to 50" Panasonic plasma TV. VIERA link allows Panasonic TV to control the HTIB thru HDMI CEC connection. Forward facing only "sound bar" mode allows 5.1 sound, while not having to run wires or use wireless setup with rear speakers. Both features work flawlessly, however the sound is a bit "flat" (but still much richer than TV speakers). IPod dock works fine, even if the controls are somewhat un-intuitive (it adds quite a bit to HTIB vertical height). Picture quality is where this HTIB really shines, with rich deep colors and no jerky motions in fast moving scenes on plasma. I also checked VIERA Cast netflix interface, but not having a subscription its hard to judge picture quality just the fact that its there. I wish the system had at least one HDMI input for cable box connection like the LG-935 does, but TOSLINK input is OK provided you can get lip-synching correct. The Scientific Atlanta 9300HD DVR doesn't lip synch over HDMI very well anyways. Overall, I think its good for $250 especially if you have Panasonic TVs. If you need HDMI inputs, I'd go with LG-935 just beware of its poorer sound quality and the need to run rear-speaker wires.
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Panasonic
- Part number: SC-BT230
- Description: The SC-BT230 is compatible with a new feature of ARC (Audio Return Channel). ARC allows receiving audio signals from the TV, on top of the preexisting HDMI function of sending audio/video signals to the TV with just one cable. This feature will simplify the connection by eliminating an audio cable connection between the TV audio output and the main unit's audio input. By using a combination of real speakers and virtual speakers, a more natural and smoother sound can be enjoyed. You'll notice the difference, epecially in an action scene - you'll feel like you're sitting in the center of a true cinema theater.
