don't buy this system
by tomcall on February 26, 2009
Pros: picture and sound quality are good
Cons: does not play all blue ray dvd's. a number of blu ray dvd's won't play or only play sound. Loaded firmware and still have the same problems.
Summary: I will be returning this system and purchase one that is more up to date so all the blu ray disks will be able to be played.

Summary: This is an excellent system. Many people that write reviews here have discussed having an experience that revolved around the inability to play discs, and bad customer support. While I do believe customer support is an important aspect of of smart shopping, I disagree with allowing that to affect how you see the product itself. That being said, I don't know why anyone would need to even contact customer support. I've had this player since late 2008, and it is now June of 2012, and it has always performed properly, and shows no signs of degradation. The speakers function flawlessly, and are very high quality. Aside from the aesthetic appeal, each speaker is endowed with quality and evidence that no corners were cut, each normal speaker weighs roughly 4 pounds, and the sub-woofer weighs almost 20. Typically, the heavier that type of object is, the better made it is, and this is no exception. The player itself works very effectively too, playing Blu-ray, DVD, and audio CD's without any trouble.
My typical use is to have surround sound for my PlayStation 3, but i have used the other features first hand as well, and have encountered no trouble.
If you're one the fence, hopefully i can push you over, because after your wallet goes into shock from the price, your ears and eyes will go into shock because of the sheer perfect quality.
I would recomend this to a friend, as well as recommending an optical cable, for clear, authentic surround sound. -
Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad...
by TheRealTroi on June 14, 2011
Pros: It might make a very pretty paperweight.
Cons: Uhhh...you can't actually watch movies on this blu-ray player.

Summary: Purchased from Best Buy, and it didn't work well from the beginning. Some discs would play some of the time, but overall watching a movie was a crapshoot. Eventually, it sputtered out completely, and it now no longer plays anything. Firmware updates via DVDRW are impossible, since the player won't recognize any disc that's put in. Unfortunately, we waited until 2 months after the warranty ran out to complain to Best Buy, so we're stuck with it.
Although we still occasionally use the fm receiver and the sound system, if you want to actually be able to watch movies on a home theater system, this is not the one to purchase.
I'm very disappointed...don't think I'll consider another Samsung purchase anytime soon. -

Problems with banners during playback
by jam05er on December 4, 2010
Pros: When it works, which is only sometimes, it is fine

Summary: My system is only about 2 years old. On some Blu Ray discs, a banner appears every few minutes which blocks the screen for about 5 seconds. It seems to do it with every new chapter. After researching the problem, I have been told that the DVD companies are putting in anti-copying software which causes these banners to appear if you copy the DVD. Unfortunately, if you have an "older" Blu Ray player, the banners appear, even if you are playing an original (not copies) Blu Ray disc. Updating the firmware (which itself is a very time-consuming process) was of no help. The Samsung customer service representative was of no help at all either. This is just one example of the many problems that I have had with this system. Trying to watch a Blu Ray disc on the system always involves some unwelcome drama, because you never know if the movie will play properly. I will never buy another Samsung product again.

Loss of 2 audio inputs left the unit useless
by robsaintjohn on May 20, 2010
Pros: Very good sound quality with blue ray surround sound.
Cons: More than the loss of the system is the poor customer service in trying to determine the problem and getting help with the repair. Insulted by the rep, promise to e-mail return process, and after 2 months, I 'm at a loss to restore system. No help

Summary: I would not recommend a SAMSUNG sound system again. This was the worst experience, most frustrating situation I have experienced, Now, I'm left with a $5,000 system that doesn't work. It will take another $700 to make it whole again. My original Samsung flat screen, now 5 years old still works, but with a different sound system. Sorry I wanted to have one manufacture!

problems playing blu-ray discs
by dhachler on March 28, 2010
Pros: When it works the picture and sound are incredible. Of course, it's attached to a huge HD flat screen with a home theater system. So how much credit should I give the player???
Cons: Great difficulty playing blu-ray discs. Upgrading firmware doesn't help the problem. It taks a very long time to load. Also, the remote is CRAZY small, with the buttons so close together that I am always pressing the wrong one by mistake.
Summary: If even you are lucky to get a blu-ray dsic that loads, it often freezes. Tec support could not help and suggested that I put in a service request on ...
Summary: If even you are lucky to get a blu-ray dsic that loads, it often freezes. Tec support could not help and suggested that I put in a service request on it. It's just 16 months old and the warranty has run out. I would NEVER, NEVER buy another Samsung player.

DON NOT BUY SAMSUNG PRODUCTS!!!
by 1jamie on March 10, 2010
Pros: When it works the sound and picture are amazing! And one more amazing thing...samsung has invented the worlds first blu-ray player that doesn't play blu-rays!
Cons: No regular firmware updates, lots of glitches and choppy play and freeze up even on dvds. Extremly long load times with blu-rays. The worst customer service I have ever seen....Do not buy samsung products as they don't care about their customers!

Summary: We have had the product since January of 2009. Started having problems in March with it not playing some BR dvd's. Samsung sent us the FW upgrade and that fixed things for a little while.
Towards the end of summer it again refused to play some BR movies so we called Samsung again and they said they would send us out the "newest FW upgrade" well--they neglected to look in our customer file to see that we had already received the ONE AND ONLY FW upgrade so we got a duplicate that was useless. We called Samsung and they said that a new FW upgrade hadnt been released yet and they had no timeline on when one would be.
About a month and a half later it started to lock up in the middle of movies, skip horribly, not load the menu screen, and make rattling and grinding noises. Called Samsung and sent it into their repair facility, CVE Inc. and they lost my unit for about a week and said that they didnt receive it--I told Samsung I had the UPS shipping conf # that they DID sign for it and then CVE found it...ironic.
Anyway, they "fixed it" sent it back. Still wouldnt play movies, locked up, skipped and made funky noises--called Samsung AGAIN and this time was fed up and talked to someone in their ECR (executive customer relations) dept to "resolve the issue". I told the guy that I didnt want to mess with it anymore and just wanted and exchange for a DIFFERENT MODEL or my $$ back--he said that I had to have it "repaired" twice before they would consider that--Ok, fine--sent it back to CVE, Inc.--they lost my unit AGAIN for 9 days and then when I threatened to call the BBB or Attny General they found it--again ironic. Then the rep made the comment that put the cherry on the top, "Maam, if we DO decide to replace your unit, it will be with a refurbished unit." Are you freaking kidding me--$700 so I can end up with someone elses broken down "fixed" unit---I DONT THINK SO!!
I am currently waiting to get my unit back. I was smart this time and marked my unit to make sure they were sending me mine back since they lost mine the 1st time I shipped it--I wanted to make sure I didnt get someone elses problem. In closing, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT, IT SUCKS AND THE SAMSUNG SUPPORT SUCKS AND THEIR REPAIR FACILITY CVE, INC SUCKS. Samsung makes great products but do not buy them as they do not take care of you!
