The good: A 5.1 home theater system with built-in Blu-ray player; excellent sound quality for a home-theater-in-a-box system; Netflix, Amazon VOD, YouTube, Pandora, and Slacker media streaming; DLNA streaming of PC-based media; wireless rear speakers; Wi-Fi with included USB dongle; can connect iPod through USB port; 3D compatible; relatively speedy Blu-ray load times.
The bad: No HDMI inputs; required USB dongle for Wi-Fi is a hassle compared with other units; only three external devices can be connected at once.
The bottom line: The Sony BDV-E770W is one of the best Blu-ray home theater systems we've tested, with excellent sound quality, tons of streaming-media options, 3D compatibility, and wireless rear speakers. The lack of HDMI inputs is the only big omission.

Good Home Theater WITH HDMI

The S-Air unit works great, can be turned on or off manually (or automatically when the unit is turned on).
--Easy setup. My wife could probably do it, but she hates to mess with electronics, so I got to. :-) I plugged the HDMI OUT into the TV, the digital optical IN from the TV, and ran the sound calibration.
--Plays burnt discs without problems
--Plays most files (except avi) from the USB drive. (Including VOB files!)
--HD online content
--Oh and not least, sounds pretty good. The speakers can be setup automatically with the included microphone and/or you can adjust them manually.
--Chokes fairly regularly when watching netflix. My wii and PC don't have these issues from the same router/fiber internet. The Picture is FANTASTIC on the Sony Bluray player, true HD. However 9/10 of the time it will choke in the middle of a show or movie.4 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Firstly, I am writing this review from Canada. My goals were clear around the purchase of a Home Theatre in a Box (HTiB). I wanted a Blu-ray and 3D compatible player with full set of wireless speakers and wifi compatibility. I had to compromise on the wireless speakers since this model only offers wireless rear speakers. The sound quality is great. Setup was very simple. I read the quick setup guide and followed the on-screen instructions to complete the speaker setup and installation of the HTiB in 30 minutes. I have a Sony KDL46EX400 LCD TV and the Bravia Sync works great with this model. As soon as I switch on the TV, the speakers automatically switch to the HTiB. Unfortunately, my TV is not compatible with Audio Return Channel so I did have to use a Digital Optical Audio Cable (not included with this model) from my TV to the HTiB Audio Input. If you have a TV compatible with Audio Return Channel, then there is bi-directional flow of information via the HDMI cables (not included with this model) and you wouldn't need any additional audio cable connection from the TV to the HTiB to watch cable. So you would need an HDMI cable connecting your HDPVR and your TV and another HDMI cable connecting the HTiB and your TV. Then, no matter what your watching, the system will always use your HTiB speakers. Anyway, I performed the calibration of the speakers automatically using the attached calibration microphone. It took about two minutes to complete. I also performed a network update to firmware M04.R.624 using the included WiFi USB key over my WiFi network (setup with Apple Extreme Base Station router). It took about twenty minutes to complete and I did not have any problems. Some people mentioned the Sony website is not user friendly, I would suggest using the Google search engine, use the model number, manufacturer name, and "support" as keywords. It is very easy to find the manuals and reviews.
The only downside to having the product in Canada is that I don't have Netflix, Pandora, Hulu, or Amazon VOD. I intend to use my Apple TV to stream from my iMac to my TV and use the HTiB speakers.
Good Luck in your purchase! I strongly recommend the Sony BDV-E770W if you're on a budget and you don't already own a blu-ray player or PS3.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I really hate when people "review" a product they've never used. Yes, it has HDMI out, you fools. No, it doesn't have HDMI in, but that shouldn't matter to most people. Just plug your devices into your TV with HDMI, then run the HDMI out of the E770W to your TV in, and an optical cord from your TV to the E770W. Done.
Great system, I'm really loving mine.3 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great product if you don't have cable or satellite.
by happyfirst on August 2, 2010
Pros: Good enough sound quality
Cons: Sony doesn't offer discrete input codes so it's next to impossible to have a single remote for all your devices.

Summary: Great product if all you want to do is watch blu-ray and any of it's internet features. If you want to use this as your primary TV audio system and you want to watch cable or satellite be prepared to deal with multiple remotes.
For some reason, Sony refuses to offer discrete remote codes for switching the audio input source. All they offer is a code that switches to the "next" input so it takes timing and luck to get it working. And the unit is slow to startup further complicating things. So it's just unreliable trying to configure a programmable remote to control all your devices.
I tried for days to get it to work. Called Sony and Logitech. In the end, the lack of being able to set audio input discretely was the deal breaker. And the family was so accustomed to one remote that it was hard going back to multiple remotes. I ended up returning product.4 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Do not upgrade its firmware!

Summary: After upgrading the firmware, the system fails to load. I called Sony support and they recognize the issue and offered to send me a brand new unit. I refused, took it back to Best Buy, and bought a Samsung unit instead. Why Best Buy even puts this product on the shelf is beyond me. It's a broken product and the only support you will ever get from Sony is "sorry, here's another. Don't upgrade it this time."

Summary: There is a lot of discussion about lack of HDMI input. Here are my 2 cents, Some folks mentioned that HDMI inpit is not required and one can connect all the HD sources to the TV using HDMI and run the optical audio out from TV to this system. Good idea, but what they do not know(or probably their TV supports that) is that the optical output from the most of the TVs(like all Samsungs plasma, LED) is 2CH if you use this type of connectivity. The output is 5.1 only for the DTV(air). Please check your TV manual and you will know. That is why having an HDMI input is imp. if you want to connect other sources like (HD cable box etc) and want to get 5.1. But If you do not care about 5.1 and are happy with 2CH then never mind.

Summary: First of all, this system sounds incredible. I am no audiophile by any means, but I am a hardcore movie fan. We played the blu-ray Independence Day and it blew us away. The opening audio cinematic where the sound runs throughout the speakers was clear and crisp. We actually started laughing because it sounded so great.
The setup was relatively easy. I tend to be very stubborn and try to set things up without the manual, but I definitely needed the manual a few key times.
Yes, the rear speakers are wireless, but there should be an asterisk next to this. They are not wired in to the main unit, but they Are wired in to a separate wireless unit. So basically it's another box hidden in the back (called a sound amplifier) with two cords running out of it so that the two rear speakers and function.
In terms of the HDMI issue, there IS an HDMI IN, and if you don't have a gaming system, there is no need to worry. I set this unit up for my parents who do not have a gaming system, and there was no problem. I connected the cable box with an optical digital audio cord, and we were good to go. But I do understand that if you have an Xbox360/Ps3, this probably wouldn't be the best system...sorry friends.
My only complaint is that this system does not come with an HDMI or optical digital audio cable. Companies need to start including these items standard.
Overall, I feel like this is a fantastic value. My parents bought this product for $499, so with the $30 HDMI and $25 digital audio cord, the total ended up being about $555 before tax. Not bad for a Blue-Ray surround sound system.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Poor sound

Cons: Very bad sound. The sound is confused, tremble is almost absent. No possibility to adjust Bass/Tremble

If you don't care about sound quality and you only need HDMI, WiFi, BD and all that staff then go for it despite the price. If you really think that sound and picture are the most important things for a Home Cinema then you should avoid it. Just listen to it in a specialized shop and try to distinguish the high frequencies: they are not there. Listen to music: everything confused. Try to personalize sound: no possibility.
