Summary: This system is stylish and sounds pretty good with an ipod hooked up to it at the Sony store. Unfortunately, with music, it does seem to lack the punch that a real home theatre system such as the Yamaha or Onkyo ones do. However, with the Yamaha and Onkyo, since you're dealing with a full size receiver you are taking up a lot more space, and you don't get the wireless rear speakers with those type of receivers.
Here's my biggest beef about the Sony though! It lacks INPUTS to plug all my stuff in. Today, most consumers have an internet TV box such as the Apple TV, or the DivX connected box, and we also have our HD DVR box from the cable or satellite company, and then of course if you get a Playstation 3 or a Blueray, you need yet another input.
Unfortunately, you don't have ANY HDMI inputs on this, and you only get 1 component video, and 1 optical audio, so you can plug one device in basically, and the rest of them will either have to be hooked up with composite cables, or be hooked directly into your TV.
What's the point of home theatre if you can't hook all your stuff up?! Last but not least, the rear speakers have a big black box that you have to plug into the wall and then run the wires, so they STILL have wires. I guess the wire problem isn't going away any time soon, but I think I would just prefer to run the surround wires directly to the receiver rather then have to find yet another cord to plug the big black receiver box into.
The one cool thing about this is the extra room speaker that comes with it. With that wireless speaker, you can control the stereo from another room, so if you're listening to your ipod, you can change tracks from your bedroom without having to go back into the living room. Pretty cool, eh?
Overall, this product has some great technology. The lack of inputs, and the sound quality make me wonder if it will be enough to make me happy. I'm on the fence right now.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Pros: Sony made it very easy to put the unit together.Wires are colored coded. I have a hearing problem but the speakers did an excellent job of separating out sounds for clarity . I love the wireless speaker that I put in my bedroom. .
Cons: It would be nice to have a few more wireless speakers.
Summary: Easy to assemble, attractive piece of quality equuipment and excellent sound quality makes me completely satisfied with purchase.

If you have a need for extra inputs it's not for you. I have a basic set-up and the sound thumps the room.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

ALMOST BURNED MY HOUSE DOWN!
by SONYALMOSTKILLEDMYFAMILY on January 26, 2009
Pros: good sound
Cons: ALMOST BURNED MY HOUSE DOWN
Summary: THIS IS A WARNING TO ANYONE WHO OWNS a SONY COMBINATION SURROUND SOUND/DVD PLAYER, it ALMOST BURNED DOWN OUR HOUSE!
IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING BUYING A SONY SURROUND SOUND ...Summary: THIS IS A WARNING TO ANYONE WHO OWNS a SONY COMBINATION SURROUND SOUND/DVD PLAYER, it ALMOST BURNED DOWN OUR HOUSE!
IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING BUYING A SONY SURROUND SOUND SYSTEM, PLEASE CONSIDER YOU'RE FAMILY'S SAFETY AND BUY A DIFFERENT MANUFACTURER.
If I hadn't been in the room when it started arching and smoking, there is no doubt in my mind that my family and I would be out on the street...or even DEAD!
My wife and I were simply watching a DVD using the surround sound when we began to smell the distinct stench of melting metals/plastics. We were then startled by a few quick sparks, by then the system was smoking, so I made the decision to unplug it and place it in a safe area away from anything flammable. The stench stuck around for a few days too!
The system had plenty of ventilation, and this situation was not a result of consumer stupidity, as many times we find in the consumer world. I am an electronic engineer, and understand that these modules need proper airflow to keep them cool. This is simply a matter of poor manufacturing, and an issue that needs to be addressed before SOMEONE DIES!
The worst part of this story is that SONY DIDN'T SEEM TO CARE AT ALL!!!! After going around in circles with them for about a week they told me that they would send a package for us to ship them the damaged product, BUT COULDN'T ENSURE THAT IT WOULD BE REPAIRED OR REPLACED WITHOUT A CHARGE. Let's keep in mind that if someone had fallen asleep in that room, while watching the same movie on the same night, they could have BURNED TO DEATH....and so could have the rest of our family.
After a bout a month we still hadn't received any box to ship our component back to Sony in. So I reluctantly made another call to customer support, only to find out that THEY NEVER SENT US A BOX, AND NO ONE HAD EVER ENTERED OUR COMPLAINT INTO THEIR SYSTEM. TALK ABOUT POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! YOU WOULD THINK THAT SUCH A BIG COMPANY WITH HIGH STANDARDS WOULD BE CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR PRODUCTS BURNING DOWN PEOPLE'S HOMES. BUT APPARENTLY NOT!
SO ANYONE WHO OWNS A SONY SURROUND SOUND/DVD PLAYER, YOU MAY WANT TO GET RID OF IT BEFORE IT BURNS DOWN YOUR HOUSE! WE WERE VERY LUCKY TO BE THERE AND BE AWAKE WHEN IT JUST ABOUT CAUGHT FIRE, YOU MAY NOT BE AS LUCKY. -
GREAT PACKAGE, GREAT PRICE!!!!!

Pros: This system has a great sound and a calibration mic to fine tune your listening experience
Cons: Speakers use a special jack not just speaker wire.

Summary: I read a lot of complaints about the units inputs, however I hooked up the TV, stereo, gaming system, VCR, it comes automatically hooked up to the DVD player, and has an ipod dock included, plus it has a wireless unit that can be placed in any room of the house. This pretty much covered every componenet I have, but if you need more this unit is probably not for you. I paid $399 at sears for mine. The 5 disk DVD player and wireless unit alone are worth the price.

Best bang for the buck!
by minirancher on November 30, 2008
Pros: I like the sound for the price of 329.00 At best buy on Black friday.
Cons: Not true wireless. Insructions could be better in the way of Different set ups like Direct tv, Dish network and others! Just shows to the TV. Did not like the Auto calabration mode. I had to set it up manually.
Summary: I would buy Again!
