The good: The Sony HT-CT550W is packed with more connectivity than your average sound bar, with three HDMI inputs and three digital audio inputs. The sound bar itself feels surprisingly well-made, with a stylish, refined look.
The bad: Unlike other budget sound bars, the HT-CT550W requires a separate head unit, which vitiates some of the benefits of a minimalist sound bar system in the first place. And although it's priced at a premium, its sound quality is not as good as that of other budget competitors. Also, the included remote is very complicated for a relatively basic device.
The bottom line: Consider the Sony HT-CT550W if you need a sound bar with a lot of connectivity, but it's otherwise not worth its premium price.

Summary: I listened to several sound bars and true surround systems and read numerous reviews before deciding on this Sony system. It is the best bang for the buck without a doubt. It is not a true surround system, so if you really want true surround you'd better go with a 5.1 or 7.1 system. As far as sound bar goes, I would put up this Sony system against anything out there right now.
I listened to the high end sound bars such as Bower Wilkins, Bose SR1 (both costs around $1,500 to $2,500) in the Magnolia section at Best Buy and at the Bose store to make sure they were set up properly. I also listened to some mid end sound bars from Harmon Kardon and Polk (around $600) and some low end systems from Samsung, LG, Vizio, etc...
Didn't think the BW and Bose systems sounded any better than Harmon Kardon or Polk, and even if you're a critical audiophile, well the BW and Bose were definitely not $1,500 or $2,500 better. Didn't have a chance to listen to the Sony system before buying it. Just read reviews, compared specs, and took the plunge. Was not too impressed at first just using default settings out of the box, so I re-read some of the reviews and read the manual thoroughly, and adjusted the controls (especially output) accordingly.
What a difference!!! Now the sound is awesome!!! Like I said, I'd put it up against the BW and Bose systems in a blindfold test. For a small or average room, this Sony is the best bang for the buck out there at $400 MSRP. It will fill your room. The highs are clear and the bass is solid.
Very clever mounting system too. No fancy bracket needed for the sound bar. All you need is 2 standard screws or nails on the wall. That's it.
For those people who gave it a negative review, my guess is, they probably used the default settings or didn't adjust the controls properly. I agree with some of the reviewers. Sony should change the default settings and make it sound awesome right out of the box. If you set it up correctly (fairly easy to do), you'll be impressed with this system.
Didn't give it 5 stars because it only has 3 HDMI inputs (wish it had 4) and does not have a center channel (but that's only a very minor issue because even without a center channel, the movie dialogue still sounds very good because you do have the ability to control the dialogue volume too). The Bose system is worse when it comes to movie dialogue.
*Note: before you will buy this Sony HTCT550W, I suggest you have to check for best price at: 3D-soundsystems.blogspot.com/p/sony-htct550w.html
I've owned this system for over 4 months now and am very happy with it. It's the best value out there. You will not be disappointed!!!3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

There is NO improvement in sound quality compared to the TV speakers. TOTAL disappointment!!
my iPhone has better bass to it
Sony REALLY dropped the ball on this product!!
Even with the levels cranked up (+6/-6), there's NO way that this a 400 watts, it has NO kick, NO bass at all.
This is the price one pays for wireless and removal of wire clutter.
PLEASE learn from my mistake.
Listen to it BEFORE you buy it.
DO GO to a store with an isolated audio room.
DON"T GO to a store where the surrounding BLARING TV's will hide the sound failure of this product!
Most positive reviews are written by store employees trying to push out the products!!
However, this product is the right size for my living room & easy to set up
No, I would not recommend this to a friend. -
Well worth it!

Summary: This system was a great alternative to my proper 5.1 setup. I did some home remodeling and I couldn't take the wires/speakers everywhere anymore. Setup was quick and painless.
The subwoofer has strong bass but not overpowering and the speaker produces a full sound. To me, it sounded great out of the box but I have tweaked the settings some and it does sound better.
I prefer the receiver since this way I can run the HDMI cables to it instead of having several hanging out of my tv. I can see CNet's point about it defeating the purpose of a sound bar's simplicity, but to me it is a helpful addition. I have a PS3, Xbox 360, and my cable box hooked up to it and haven't experienced a single problem with passthrough connectivity (3D and 2D).
The remote is a typical Sony universal remote. Not bad but I'll stick with my Logitech Harmony 700.
I based this purchase off of CNet's reivew of the CT150. The receiver is what sold me and I recommend this sound bar to anyone looking for a good alternative to a 5.1 system. The trade off was worth it. -
CNet, do a bit of research before your reviews.

The sound quality is somewhat subjective, but it sounds great, on par with my old 5.1 setup with a proper AV receiver (Denon) after some setting changes. I didn't want to have all my components going into the TV with wires hanging back of it, so the separate receiver setup works perfect for me with just one HDMI and optical wire going to the TV. I tried a bunch of other soundbars, but apart from the Bose one which sells for over $1000, this one gets my vote. Great value for the $300 I paid for it too! -
I bought this system to get rid of all the clutter.
