Summary: I bought this to replace my 10 year old Onkyo system that died a tragic lightning induced death. I looked at the current Onkyo systems in the same price range but they came with passive subwoofers instead of a powered sub like this Yamaha system. It was mainly because of that that I decided on this system instead of the Onkyos. I'm glad I did. The setup was a piece of cake. Fortunately I already had all of the speaker cables run so I didn't have to deal with measuring, cutting, stripping, and running the speaker wires.
I hooked up all of my HDMI devices through it and they work flawlessly. The self calibrating YPAO feature works great and made adjusting the speaker levels a breeze although I did have to manually adjust the subwoofer level which had been set too low for my liking.
The sound quality is excellent. I was a little worried that the small speakers wouldn't sound as good as the much larger speakers that were part of my old Onkyo system but to my ears they actually sound as good or maybe even a little better. I could have used the Onkyo speakers but the Yamahas are a lot smaller, take up less space, look a little nicer, and sound great so I'm perfectly happy with them.
The onscreen menu system is great and makes adjusting any setting a piece of cake although I recommend at least browsing through the manual once to get an idea of what settings are where and what they do. It's not complicated at all though. The various audio effect settings are also pretty cool to have although not everyone may find them useful. I personally like having all of the Neo and Dolby options and the other processing options.
I haven't used all of the features it has but what I have used works great. I have a satellite box, blu ray, and Roku hooked up through it using its HDMI inputs, then going out to a 55" LED 1080P tv. I've tried video ranging from standard def TV through 1080P and audio ranging from regular 2 channel stereo through DTS and 5.1 sources and and everything has worked perfectly.
Overall I highly recommend it for anyone who is looking for a home theater in a box in this price range.
