Canon Pixma iP100 price range: $199.00 - $335.00

The good: High-resolution ink nozzles produce excellent prints; significant speed improvements over previous model; retains familiar design.
The bad: No Wi-Fi or carrying case options; lacks integrated media card reader; high price tag relative to those of desktop printers.
The bottom line: It isn't cheap compared to standard printers, but the Canon Pixma iP100 has the highest resolution available in the mobile printer market and prints at an impressive speed to boot. If you simply must have a printer with you at all times, the iP100 should be the do-it-all at your side.
Canon continues its lineage of successful Pixma portable inkjet printers with the iP100, an upgrade from last year's iP90v. This time around, Canon increased the number of ink nozzles and doubled the maximum resolution to 4,800x1,200 dpi color. As a result, we've seen significant improvements in both print speed and quality that make the portable iP100 competitive with even some full-size printers. For $250, you don't get some of the bells and whistles of Hewlett-Packard's mobile companion such as a multimedia card reader or optional Wi-Fi connectivity. Even still, we much prefer this Canon for its lower profile, its quick print speeds, an upgraded cartridge set, and its overall versatility.
We like the design continuity in the Pixma mobile line and the simple aesthetic it provides. The iP100 looks almost identical to its predecessor, the iP90v. The body has a matte-silver finish with glossy black side panels and paper handling trays that extend out of the device. Thankfully, the input tray holds 50 sheets of paper, a 20-page jump from the iP90v. The right side of the printer houses an infrared port for connecting to IrMC 1.1-compatible cell phones, a USB 2.0 port, and a PictBridge port for direct printing from compatible digicams. For an extra $50, Canon will throw in the BU-30, a Bluetooth adapter that plugs into the USB port, allowing you to print wirelessly from a laptop or mobile device. Unfortunately, the iP100 lacks the built-in card reader that's included in the HP H470; users are forced to print via USB or through the PictBridge port. There's also no Wi-Fi adapter currently available for the iP100, so if these two features are absolute must-haves, the HP Deskjet 460c might be a better choice.
At 2.4 inches tall, 12.7 inches wide, and 7.2 inches deep, the iP100 is actually slightly larger and heavier than last year's model, but it still retains a smaller profile than its direct competitor, the HP Officejet H470. From a portability standpoint, the iP100 is easily transportable, but it would have been great if Canon had included a carrying case to protect the unit in transit.
While the iP100 keeps the same physical profile as its predecessor, the internal cartridge system has been completely revamped. First, the iP100 bumps up the number of total nozzles from 1,088 to 1,856. Compare that to the 1,072 nozzles inside the H470 and you'll see why Canon is more than one full model ahead of HP in this competitive space. The iP100 uses Canon's newest ChromoLife color inks; each cartridge costs approximately $17 and reportedly yields 249 pages. Like the iP90v and the iP90 before it, economic users can stretch out their cartridges' lifecycles using two options built into the driver: Save Black Ink or Use Composite mode. Save Black Ink reduces the amount of black ink used in text and grayscale graphics, while the Use Composite mode produces a pseudo-black out of the remaining color spectrum once the black ink is depleted.
(Longer bars indicate better performance)
| Photo (PPM)(10 copies) | Presentation (PPM) | Text (PPM) |
The engineers over at Canon successfully increased print speed from previous models by 1 page per minute in all three of our format tests. The iP100 printed text at an impressive 7.12 pages per minute, which not only stands head and shoulders above the HP H470, but also bests the print speeds of several full-size all-in-ones and single-function photo printers available at retail stores right now. On the average, the iP100 printed photos at 1.09 sheets per minute, which is acceptable but not spectacular. However, you can increase print times in photo- and graphics-heavy documents by manually changing the amount of time the printer waits for the previous page to dry.
Looking at the picture from a qualitative standpoint, the iP100's print samples appear to be on a par with, if not slightly better than the iP90v's. We hardly detected any graininess at all in both portrait and landscape photos--the prints themselves are very natural with accurate and vivid color palettes. Our text documents came out free of jagged edges in both 20-pound generic copy paper and high-quality glossy sheets. The current model also resolves the slight blue cast in the grayscale portion of our test subjects that we reported with its predecessor. However, there were some negatives. Some of the photos we printed on Canon's own Photo Paper Plus Glossy II produced a slightly overcast hue that was definitely noticeable; the effect was not necessarily displeasing, just slightly colder than what we've seen from other printers. We could also see blocky transitions in our color gradients. But as a whole, we were very happy with this device's output quality as a versatile printer designed for quick photo, document, and presentation prints on the go.
The company offers a handful of accessories sold separately, including the aforementioned Bluetooth key, a $90 car charger, and an external battery pack that'll reportedly snag you an additional 290 pages for $100.
Canon gives a standard one-year warranty with the iP100, with additional troubleshooting via toll-free phone support. The Canon Web site also provides e-mail support as well as a comprehensive list of FAQs and driver update downloads.

Outstanding Mobile Printer

Pros: Small footprint, fast print speed and a very nice photo printer

Summary: Needed a dependable mobile printer that had blue tooth capability to connect to my MacBook Pro. After reading CNET's rating, I purchased the iP100 and I have no regrets. The print quality and speed is outstanding and the compact size is a plus. I purchased a generic bluetooth USB adapter and my MacBook picked it up almost immediately so no cable from computer to printer is required. Its the perfect little portable printer companion for the laptop. Another plus is the beautiful photo's it produces. Just a great little printer that can tackle pretty big jobs.

Great quality, very portable, but toner too expensive
by sjkuser on June 30, 2009
Pros: Remarkably fast. Print quality's excellent--even for photos (not pro photo quality, but v. nice). Lightweight, folds into a neat rectangle & adapter isn't cumbersome. Easy setup. New models have wi-fi (I haven't tried it yet). Really impressive.
Cons: Machine's worth the high $, but toner is ABSURDLY expensive and runs out fast. Also, heavy graphics print quite wet and smear easily--machine automatically senses ink concentrations and pauses for drying time, but you still need to watch that.
Summary: Despite the insultingly high price and low output of the toner cartridges, this is an excellent choice if you need to produce professional looking documents on the road. Easy to ...

Great option for documents, invoices, etc
by miksurf on June 10, 2008
Pros: Compact, blazing fast letter & envelope printing for my design studio.
Cons: Older design software, like Macromedia Freehand MX (we still use!) may require converting files to EPS format first.

Summary: I am a professional designer, photographer, and I purchased the Pixma 100 to back-up my Epson Stylus Pro 3800 printer which shouldn't be wasted on mundane needs: invoices, envelopes, small ad proofs, hard copy for book text etc. I didn't like what was offered as Laser printers, so I rolled the dice and bought this. Mainly because I like the size, and I have an affinity for Canon as a photographer. Bottom line: I love this little machine. It prints text blazing fast, and the color printing is also fast and fairly accurate in terms of reproducing my letterhead, etc. If your needs match mine, including the fact that I can take it along when traveling, then jump on it. I am using it with a new dual-intel MacBook Pro, OSX Leopard. I rate it at 9 because although it prints fairly accurate color proofs, there is some slight banding. Totally OK for quick cheap color samples, or snapshots. Anything that really requires perfection will be done on the Epson; that's its role. This fulfills its own role in the studio perfectly.

Excellent best printer I've owned for the size
by RIJAL4 on May 13, 2009
Pros: Compact prints clean and fast and I paid only $149.00 at Best Buy not an open box Brand! Spankin! New! It goes well with Sony VAIO VGN-NR98E I bought backin October for $425 at the same store
Cons: What Cons?
Summary: You can't always get what you want but sometimes you get what you need.

Quick, Great Quality, Portable
by opssmile on February 21, 2012
Pros: This little printer has great print quality and gets the job done quickly. The quality of photos, flyers, brochures and text printing can be used for any need. For the on the go person this is a printer you should check out.
Cons: At this point I do not have any. For those that say ink is expensive, ink is expensive for any printer you run. I have an HP printer that has individual cartridges and I spend just as much replacing ink.
Summary: I bought this printer about a year and a half ago and I have used it continually on the go with no problems. I have a roller computer bag that ...
Summary: I bought this printer about a year and a half ago and I have used it continually on the go with no problems. I have a roller computer bag that I use to transport the printer and my laptop and I always have a way to print. I use this printer to print out photos, flyers and I even make my own tickets for funraising events. All around it continues to get the job done with a professional look even after a thousand or more prints through it. I recommend this printer to anyone that needs a great little printer on the Go. As for no WIFI and all that I can not comment on, because I always just have a cord to plug into my computer.

Another great portable inkjet printer from Canon

Summary: This printer works as well as any Canon printer, which is very well. Canon has been great at keeping the number of parts in the print mechanism down to reduce possible failures. High quality output with great portability.
Edit:
Just FYI, the CNET reviewer make an error. There is a wireless option for this printer. If you remove the left side cover there is a place to plug in a wireless adapter and reinstall the cover. From the looks of the chamber it would likely be the same wireless adapter that works with the previous Canon portable printers.

After having serviced several of these printers I should mention the following:
Some of these units have a bad habit of developing an ink leak that leaks on the USB ports and the main circuit board. With Canon's older portable printers they had this awesome ink system where there was an actual waste ink tank on the rear inside of the printer. These tanks NEVER leaked and worked quite well. On the iP100 Canon has changed this system. They are (for some reason) trying to make the iP100 like their larger desktop printers by having a stack of pads under the print mechanism. These pads are supposed to absorb the waste ink. However, I have seen leaks develop in various suction tubes and joints that are used to rout the waste ink from the purge unit to the waste ink absorbers. These leaks may be cleanable or they may damage the electronics. From the low amount we get for service is may not be a common fault. -
Bluetooth functionality is good without the price tag!
by theskullhunter on February 24, 2009
Pros: I thought i would share my results with you all. I have a Motorola PC850 bluetooth dongle running my ip100 which before now essentially had no purpose since upgrading to vista blew that out the window.
Cons: Must have canons bluetooth set up with dongle and usb to initiate first registration for proper bluetooth communication. As I remember just pairing the printer by windows bluetooth caused a no connection error.
Summary: Don't spend $50+ on a overpriced O.E.M. Bluetooth dongle from canon. I'm unsure of other models or adapters might work on this printer. As tested I'...
Summary: Don't spend $50+ on a overpriced O.E.M. Bluetooth dongle from canon. I'm unsure of other models or adapters might work on this printer. As tested I've been able to pair my phone BB8130, 64 bit vista laptop and 32 bit desktop to the printer this way. The BU-30 (canon print server dongle)is wth pricey considering this 8$ one works just fine. BTW i found a pc850 vista workaround @ http://xan21.blogspot.com/2008/03/working-fix-for-pc850-on-vista.html just in case you want to use it elsewhere or not buy a vista ready one!
