Very good

CNET Editor's rating: 7.2 out of 10

The good: The Canon Pixma MP830 is inexpensive for a multifunction printer that includes a fax machine, an ADF, a duplexer, and a media card reader. It's quick at scanning and printing.

The bad: The MP830 is not networkable and its color graphics print quality leaves something to be desired.

The bottom line: The Canon Pixma MP830 is a good option for a single home or office user who doesn't need high-quality graphics prints. If you need better graphics handling or networking, check out the HP OfficeJet 7410.

The Canon Pixma MP830 is an affordable color inkjet multifunction printer that will work equally well in a very small (read: one PC) office and at home. At $299, it boasts an impressive list of features: an automatic document feeder, a built-in duplexer, a media card reader, and a USB port for printing straight from a camera. While it prints and scans quickly, the quality of the prints left something to be desired. To the naked eye, the text looked fine, but upon closer examination, we noticed some problems. Graphics prints proved to be even more problematic, but the printer does do a good enough job with photos for casual snapshots. Print quality is acceptable for home use, but if you work in a graphics-intensive work environment and need high-quality prints, consider the more expensive HP OfficeJet 7410; with the 7410, you'll also gain networking capability--a handy feature for any multi-PC office.

Brutal bug when printing text with duplexing on
Unlike the MP780, the MP830 printer driver has a very serious bug that likely has it using the color inks ...

Updated
"This is from Canon technical support:
"The unit was designed to print using "composite black" when duplexing. Composite black is created by using color inks. Unfortunately, we do not have answers as to why Canon USA made this decisions, these decisions are determined by the developers at Canon INC."

Absolutely brutal. If I could I would change my rating to zero. Composite black text print is vastly inferior to the text print produced when using the black ink cartridge. Canon technical support is basically telling me that duplex black text printing on the MP830 is horrible by design. Oh, plus you have the added bonus of wasting color ink when printing black text while duplexing. Inexcusable
Updated
I should have written "Like the MP780"--not unlike.

Canon believes if these printers don't use composite black ink while duplexing, the text will show through to the other side. I tested this manually (I flipped the page over myself and printed on it), and I disagree: the text looked a lot better, and there were no issues.

Anyway, Canon believes printing with composite black ink ensures the text will not bleed or be seen on the other side of the page. I've tested this manually by printing on one side of a piece of plain paper, flipping the page over, and printing on the other side. The text looked vastly better on both sides--and there were no issues. So, I compeltely disagree with Canon. The choice to use color ink to produce black ink while duplexing is a bad choice. At the very least the option should exist in the printer driver to use the proper black ink tank when duplexing if that's what the customer wants.

I have this printer networked with my laptop within windows networking software, so i have the printer wired into my desktop and my laptop is wirelesly hooked up to the internet with my pre-n belkin router i (DO NOT HAVE A PRINTER SERVER)and when i want to print with my laptop i just click print and it prints, it shows the cannon mp 830 printer located on my network desktop computer. My desktop has 2 hard drives, one for regular use and one for my kid to play games on and whatever else he wants to do cause we don't enable the internet on that drive, and the regular drive i have 4 user accounts: me, wife, kid, and guest account, and it prints nomatter what account is logged on to and even when it is on the welcome screen waiting for a user to log on, i have norton internet security 2006 spyware edition installed with only one user account with administrator privileges, and parental control teenage level for my teenager, and child level for the guest account, and i can print with my laptop on any or no accounts logged on the desktop, the only thing is the desktop has to be on, i have had no problems, with the printer or networking, and my norton internet security, antivirus, firewall, spyware, parental controls, etc. is working great, i never find viruses or spyware, and have everything on automatic update, including windows, i love the fact that norton has a all-in-one security product finally. I also have done duplex printing (two-sided) and it works great and saves a lot of paper.
AGAIN I LOVE THIS MACHINE!!!!!!!
