Good overall printer; excellent CD printing capability
by Chipell on August 13, 2009
Pros: Good black text quality; good picture quality; excellent cd printing quality. Separate ink tanks.
Cons: Very slow printer; fairly large footprint; changing printer door from paper to cd printing is simple but awkward;
Summary: For the price, this is an excellent choice for the home user who wants a printer to do letters, photos and printable CD's. While rather slow on the printing ...

Summary: For the price, this is an excellent choice for the home user who wants a printer to do letters, photos and printable CD's. While rather slow on the printing side, this printer makes up for lack of speed by a high quality print output.

Summary: I don't know where to begin... I have owned this printer for (6) months. I bought it when I bought my new MacBook Pro laptop. Since I've owned it it has had problems with paper, it jams CONSTANTLY despite consistently using only INK JET paper. A few days ago it started a "printing strike" and it would only print (1) page before claiming it had no longer had paper nor ink. (Both the ink and paper buttons were illuminated red.) When I used the utility function to check the ink levels however, all the ink levels were fine and there was plenty of unjammed paper in the tray. I tried rebooting my lap top and restarting the printer countless times to no avail. Then today, it is unable to print anything at all, I was unable run any of the utilities, and I was unable to check the ink levels. When I go to utilities and select "Open Printer Utility" it says there is a communication error, but all the requisite electrical cords and the USB cords are properly connected. Other than this printing issue, my 6-month old MAC lap top is running great and the same USB cord works great when I hooked it up to my scanner a few minutes ago, so I know the communication error lies somewhere in the printer. I'm going insane and tearing my hair out, so I disconnected the printed and put it in my recycling bin outside so I no longer have to look at it.
If you value your insanity, you will NOT purchase this printer!

Great printer so far
by dr_gonzo69 on September 29, 2011
Pros: About the same size as the Stylus Photo R280 it replaced
Do not have to use the crappy bundled DVD printing software
Easy to set up and use
Cons: Rejects a lot of disks so far (kicks them back out, reinserting and pressing Paper button works after a couple of tries)
Low ink indicator was wrong
Summary: Bought as a replacement for the Stylus Photo R280 primarily to print DVD/CD labels. I don't intend to ever use the horrible bundled developed-by-offshore-slave-laborer label printing software, never ...

Summary: Bought as a replacement for the Stylus Photo R280 primarily to print DVD/CD labels. I don't intend to ever use the horrible bundled developed-by-offshore-slave-laborer label printing software, never installed it. Driver options are the same as for the R280, prints from Adobe Illustrator without issues except...
So far, of the first three disc labels I printed, it rejected two repeatedly. I had to reinsert and press the Paper button multiple times and eventually it printed. Could be because it's a new printer but I don't like that symptom because that was why I eventually diitched the R280.
As long as it prints reliably and I get decent use out of it, I'm very happy. FWIW, you can find an R280 on eBay for $200+ if you want to go that route but I got the Artisan on Amazon for $99 and it does use the same ink as the R280.

This printer was designed to just sell ink.
by CrotalusHH on January 18, 2011
Pros: Does a beautiful job of printing on CD's
Cons: It uses all 6 colors to print black. It constantly spits out the CD and goes into error mode. Pop up ink ads all the time.
Summary: It uses ink very fast. The high capacity ink cartridges for it seem to be non-existent. When the CD mode errors and spits out the CD you must turn off ...

Summary: It uses ink very fast. The high capacity ink cartridges for it seem to be non-existent. When the CD mode errors and spits out the CD you must turn off the printer, move the tray to the paper mode, turn the printer back on, wait for it to do a lengthy reset, move the tray back to CD mode, and try to print again. About half the time it will error out again. I rarely get to print more than 2 CD's before it faults out.
I've owned several Epson printers. This one is the worst.
