Nice when it prints, which is not often

Summary: Maybe I got a lemon. It wouldn't recognize the ink cartridges until I repeatedly removed-and-replaced them. The cartridges started to need to be replaced after only about 10 13x19 prints. And printing on any kind of paper at all required loading, unloading, loading, unloading ... as many as a dozen times, before it would recognize that there was media in there.
Very frustrating all around, and I'm returning it.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Epson 1400 printer it didn't do what Epson stated

Summary: I research and agonized over buying this printer because of the price. Well finally decided to go and purchase it on Thursday. Well took it home and set it up. I thought I was ready to printer my borderless 12x12 sheets. Well guess what. It didn't print borderless. So on Friday I called Epson and was on the phone with them for almost a hour. I did everything they instructed me to do and still nothing. They couldn't tell me why it would not print the 12x12 borderless sheets. It states clearly on the box that it prints 12x12 borderless scrapbook pages and on top of that I was using their 12x12 scrapbook paper which is not true 12x12 but 11.6x11.6. Well I ended up returning the printer to the store and having to pay a $60 restocking fee at Circuit City which didn't make me happy but didn't have much choice. If you are looking to buy this printer for mainly that reason don't. I have a Canon I9900 and it prints as good or better than the Epson. I can't say anything about picture printing because I didn't try.

Terrific Printer
by Stephen Irving on May 27, 2007
Pros: Excellent color. Compared the same photo previously printed with the 1270 and the 1400 even looks sharper!
Cons: None yet. It works great.
Summary: This is definitely a 10! I'm using Epson Premium Photo Paper Glossy to get the archival benefits and am thrilled that I won't have to worry about fading.

One of the worst printers I have ever owned
by ebayellegon on January 28, 2011
Pros: Occasionally printed an image that didn't suck.
Cons: 1st one died after printing about 10 sheets of paper. 2 months later a new one arrived on warranty. Since then it has been a never ending cycle of costly ink cartridges and failed print heads, and sporadic connectivity issues.
Summary: 1st printer failed after essentially no use - just one step ahead of being a DOA. Second one has printed perhaps 3-4 hundred sheets correctly over the past couple of ...
Summary: 1st printer failed after essentially no use - just one step ahead of being a DOA. Second one has printed perhaps 3-4 hundred sheets correctly over the past couple of years, along with costing me hundreds of dollars in ink cartridges and printhead failures. Now, with all Epson replacement supplies, I am unable to print because of yet another failed printhead, and I refuse to shell out any more money for this piece of *(#&%& printer. I had an HP 1220 prior to this, and it worked like the Energizer Bunny - thousands and thousands of solid prints. I bought this one for the 12x12 functionality for my wife, and it has yet to print one that size successfully. I absolutely, completely regret ever purchasing this unit. Prospective buyer reading this, stay far away from this model. Far, far away.

The black ink is not working, so I'm "cleaning the nozzles". Been cleaning for about 10 minutes now. I just want to print 3 pages in black and white and go to sleep.

Summary: The first one of these printers I tried printed everything in green. I spent numerous hours trying to figure out the problem and used my smaller printer as a comparison. nothing worked. everything was green. Then.. Thank god the printer just stopped working. Several weeks later Itried this printer again. and now I have a purple line printed on all my pictures. the line appears about 1/8 inches from the top of the picture. again I tried numerous settings and nothing worked. I tried to align the print heads and still have the purple line.
I currently own an epson printer thats not a large format and this printer works great and gave in my opinion.. epson a great name in printers.
Im not so sure anymore. This printer has destroyed epsons good name. After reading the reviews on this printer. I think Im going to try someone else. -

Summary: First let me say, in reading all the reviews on this printer, I found that folks either loved it or hated it. I think maybe there were quite a few "lemons" that left factory, but if you get a good one, it is amazing. When I purchased the Epson I sought advise from two gentlemen that helped me bring back my Canon to life and where I obtain my ink. I think their advise has caused me to have great success with this printer and to avoid some pitfalls.
1st, when you first purchase this printer, go to the maintenance program and run an alignment test. If it doesn't align correctly right away, send it back. (The gentlemen who provided me help with many printers, said if it comes with a messed up alignment right out of the box, it happened in the factory and it will never be right )Mine was in great working order so I proceeded.
2nd: I also see that many folks are unhappy with the ink consumption....I don't find it to be any more then my Canon Photo Printer(especially when it comes to the Photo Magenta and Photo Cyan) but I will say this, the only way I would be able to afford to run this printer ( or any other for that matter)in quantities that I print (full size 8x10 2 and 3 hundred at a time when I am full scrapbooking mode) is to buy ink in quanity and refill. The thing is with the Epson is these cartridges are difficult to refill, so the solution is to also purchase a good CISS.(Continual Ink System) This works wonderfully with this printer. No replacing cartridges, and if you are someone who refills this is definitely the only way to go with the Epson 1400.
Be sure you are using a good quality ink, that is of the same quality as your OEM cartridges or you will have trouble.
3rd: If you have Windows 7 pay attention when you open the box and heed the warning and "Do not insert the CD that comes with it" You must download the drivers and the CD package for this printer to work correctly. Do that before you do anything else.
I love the results I am getting, also there are profiles available for different types of Photo paper, mine came included in my CISS kit, so if you are finding you can only use Epson paper, this might be a solution.
I would list the website where I obtain my ink supplies and all my great help, but we cannot on this review site..so if you are interested, Drop me a line, I will be glad to give you the info.
This printer is work horse, it is like comparing a Clydesdale to race horse. If you do a lot of full color printing and projects, this printer is for you, if you are just a once in awhile printer, I would say to look in another direction. -
Horrible printer for my uses.
by 1inthelight on October 23, 2011
Pros: Prints decent portraits, reproduces flesh tones fairly accurately.
Cons: Color always has to be tweaked in Photoshop to print correctly. Drinks ink like nothing I've ever seen. WILL NOT PRINT on transparencies or opaque papers AT ALL. My Canon i9900 would print on WOOD for goodness sake, and this thing won't even print on m

Summary: I print on a lot of different papers and surfaces, and this printer was just a waste of money for me. I will not buy an Epson again, it's even worse than the little Kodak AiO 5300 we have (and it's pretty bad). We have owned HP (2), Canon (3), Kodak (2), Epson (1), so have a fair amount of experience with different printers. Back to Canon for me.
