Epson is not what it once was.
by Prevali on April 19, 2009
Pros: When it prints it does a very good job.
Cons: Problems recognizing the ink cartridges. When a new cartridge is installed ALL cartridges are charged sucking up ink. Must physically remove and replace the Photo blk. for the Matt blk. which uses up ink.

Summary: My wife and I have been shooting professionally since the late 80?s and have been 100% digital since 2000. We believe in purchasing the better ?tools? for what we do because not only is time money but it?s our reputation too. Frankly we found that Epson printers were superior some time ago, however we no longer feel that way. We had an Epson 2400 and loved it! After several years of pretty good service and with few complaints our 2400 finally died so we purchased a R1900 and had issues since day one. Primarily the problems of recognizing ink cartridges and the constant need to clean the heads requiring a significant amount of ink.
Epson acknowledged the problems and admitted that there were issues with some cartridges. We figured they would resolve the issues but they didn?t and several months later we were still purchasing faulty cartridges. Epson was always good about replacing the bad cartridges but it became old and expensive so decided to replace the R1900 with a refurbished R2880. We set it up and it worked fine, for about 15 or so prints. As I write this I am on my 3rd, Vivid Light Magenta cartridge that the R2880 printer can?t recognize.
For the record, Epson machines print quite well, if and when they work! Being a pro we do not have the time and in this economy, the money, to play games with a multi-billion dollar company that has the ability to resolve these issues but choose not to. As one of the Epson teks told me. ?If the problems occur in less than 10% of the machines then it probably isn?t worth fixing?. I?m sure that this technician was speaking his own opinion but I have to admit the comment wasn?t far off from how I felt after spending hours on the phone in an effort to resolve the problem and/or requesting replacement inks.
In an effort not to sound as if I?m promoting another manufacturer I will not list what I found in my latest research, but I encourage that anyone looking into this machine, or Epson technology, really do your homework because between problems recognizing cartridges, recharging each time a new cartridge is installed which burns ink, clogged jets and small expensive inks cartridges; well enough is enough!
Goodbye Epson, you?ve lost a long time customer!3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Outstanding...but not for those in a hurry

It is not a "point and shoot" type printer. You can buy those for $99 at office max. This printer needs adjustments and settings to be right. If you get those correct (and it's not hard but takes some effort) the results are gorgeous. Black and white are superb too. I have had mine now for 2 years and cannot say how pleased I am with this. I am a pro shooter and from time to time my lab screws up a print for my clients. I always re-print the shot myself on the Epson, and deliver in person. Makes for great customer relations too !!! Never had a complaint about the replacement print yet. -
Beware, beware, beware.
by joefromla on October 15, 2009
Pros: Beautiful output.
Cons: I have just spent most of a day on the phone with Epson. The printer I have will not print a full borderless 19x17. So far the suggestions have been:
I estimate it has cost 6 hours and approximately $100 in ink.
BEWARE this printer!Summary: Great prints when it's working. For me-- it's not working correctly yet.

Needs to be taken off the market; it's a dud
by weaverpix on July 16, 2009
Pros: When it prints -- if it prints -- it has beautiful prints sometimes. But no always!
Cons: I am on my 2nd substitution for the first one they sent. So far, inferior prints some times. Won't recognize paper. Won't recognize ink cartridges. Refuses to feed paper from the manual roll. The third one I've been sent refuses to feed any paper!

Summary: The first printer they sent did not print the stunning photos I was led to expect. I called tech support and they walked me through all the steps. It did better for a while then quality went sour again. Tech support again. Sometimes I get stunning photos; sometimes not. Inconsistentency is its motto!
I tried to print on Epson watercolor paper using the back manual tray. It refused to pull the paper in. Spun its wheels. Tech support spent 2 hours (yes! 2 hours) assuming I was just too stupid to know how to feed paper straight, then admitted it probably had a sensor problem, and they'd send me a replacement. That took a week!
The replacement was not the new machine I paid for, but a "refurbished" one. Someone forgot to refurbish it. It would not recognize the ink cartridges. It did not print at all. So, after another two hours on the phone at my long distance expense, I was promised a replacement new one overnight. Well, that one came, and it won't recognize paper in any tray, and says it has the wrong ink cartridges in, when they're not wrong! I can't even print a letter out of Word or print my checks out of QuickBooks!
It is worse than useless! I want my money back after trying three (Yes, that's right - three) printers that won't work! -
the sharpness and color saturation is quite amazing
by tomlopez on January 12, 2009
Pros: Been printing with Epson printers for better than twelve years and this printer is the fastest, sharpest and richest color printer I have seen. It is sharper than my Epson 9800. I may need to upgrade to the 9880 or 9900 far sooner than I imagined.
Cons: ink cartridges should be largerf

Printing in 16 bit color mode the Epson profiles for Premium Lustre paper is remarkably accurate ? no need for a custom calibrator to create a specific profile. The printer?s sharpness is what really makes this printer a bargain. For prints up to 13 x 19 you can make photographic prints that will rival the best service bureau.
In Black and White Advanced mode the printer?s ability to render an accurate and extremely smooth tonality will make this a wonderful printer for those who still prefer the classical esthetic of B&W. -

it online. I just received my Epson R2880 and I cannot say enough good
things about it.
The set up was a breeze! I followed the directions in the quick start
guide, installed the drivers from the CD enclosed with the printer and went
to Epson's site to get the latest ICC profiles.
Within thirty minutes I had my first print in hand. WOW! Simply
outstanding! Epson¹s claim that the R2880 provides "Exhibition Quality
Prints" is spot on in my book.
The funny thing is, I have a brand new color printer, and the first print I
made was black and white. It brought me back to being a kid in the
darkroom, when I made my first black and white print. (The ones that have
had the experience of seeing a print come to life in developer for the first
time, know what I'm talking about). Well, it was just like that experience
with my new Epson R2880.
The bad thing about that, is now I want to run out and buy a scanner for all
those black and white negatives that I have tucked away in the archive. Most
likely an Epson V750.
The other thing I like about this printer is the ability to use the roll
paper attachment that came in the box with the printer. I installed it just
after pulling the printer out of the box. Now, I can print either a 13" x
44" or 8.5" x 44" for either panoramic or gang printing. In addition, you
have the option to print 13" x 19" on 1.3mm thick media and Canvas. I
cannot wait to play with that.
What about color prints? Thanks for asking.
The palette of colors seems to be real broad. The skin tones seem to be
spot on and the bright colorful images simply popped! Hey, after all you
have 8 cartridges of Epson¹s UltraChrome K3 ink going to that media.
That brings me to the ink issue you might have read about in other reviews.
All I can say is you get what you pay for! The Epson R2880 is worth it for
the results you will have for a lifetime.
The foot print is not small, but you sure do get a lot packed in to its
24.3" (W) x 31.4" (D) x 16.3" (H) size.
I am hooked on this Epson R2880 printer. So much so, I signed up for an
upcoming Epson Print Academy to get that much more out of my Epson R2880.
Just go get one and you will see what I mean.
Enjoy the prints of a lifetime! -
Exellent, high-quality prints on Epson R2880

Summary: The Epson Stylus R2880 produces excellent prints. The archival quality is important to me, and the colors are brilliant. Most prints came out virtually the same as my monitor; every so often I have to tweak a file. I made no adjustments to get perfect black and white prints with no color casts; rich blacks and a nice tonal range. It prints beautiful portraits.
If this will be your home computer, make sure you have a decent-sized place to set it up. It?s very sleek looking and closes up to keep dust out. It?s about 2 ft wide, but is compact for a printer that produces up to 13? x 19? prints.
The set up was easy, and it?s easy to use. Make sure you read all of the directions. It?s sensitive to each kind of paper and where it?s loaded. I?m working on Windows Vista. I just checked for the latest drivers. Also, it doesn?t come with a printer cable, so purchase one separately if you don?t have an extra.
I use the printer for color proofing book and poster designs and making high-quality prints. To get the promise of quality, only Epson products should be used which means no bargain shopping. I like the Ultra Premium Photo Luster paper.
Also the difference in using the quality versus max quality print settings is hardly noticeable if you want to save ink. However, I will always use max quality for my final product.
I?ve only printed on 8 ½ x 11 so far, but I?m looking forward to printing on roll and larger paper. I can?t wait to try out some of the features such as printing images on my DVDs. It will make my home video productions look more professional to send to family.
I would definitely recommend this printer to any serious amateur or professional dealing with images -
Awesome Printer!

never had my own photo printer - much less one that could print a large
13x19 inch print. I always had more confidence in "REAL PHOTO PRINTS" and
felt better about delivering those to my clients. But after just a few days
of working with this printer, I have been astounded by the quality of
prints, and now I plan on delivering R2880 prints to everyone! They are just
so much better than the processed prints I have been buying from labs.
My first glance at it, as I opened the box, showed a stylish looking
printer. As I took it out I felt how heavy it was. It feels like a printer
that was made with heavy duty parts. The trays are thick, not flimsy, like I
see on some printers. The set-up was easy, as well as the installation of
software.
I am primarily a portrait photographer and body painting artist. My files
that don't include the body paint are most often black and white, and I had
heard the claims of beautiful black and white prints off the Epson Stylus
Photo R2880. So I was very anxious to try some out.
My first print was outstanding. The black and white print was completely
neutral without any adjustment to the file. The details in the shadows were
more visible than in the "real photo prints" I had just got back from the
commercial lab I was using. The details were outstanding and smooth
gradients too.
Now it was time to print out some color images. My portraits contain a lot
of skin-tones as well as the rich bright colors from the body make-up. In
the past, if I bumped up the colors so the body make-up would look bright,
the skin tone looked over-saturated, sometimes too warm. Get the skin-tone
correct, and the body make-up would not look as bright as I wanted it to.
Using my new 2880, I took a file with no adjustment for printing and printed
it out. The colors were bright and vibrant, especially in the magenta and
blue hues. The skin tone was great, not too warm. I knew that the printer
inks EPSON used in this printer were supposed to be brighter, but I assumed
it might be such a slight difference that your eye would not really even
notice. Boy, was I wrong.
I took these prints to a professional commercial photographer friend of
mine. He had been printing with the Epson Stylus Photo 2200. He has had it
for a few years now, and was very happy with the prints he made from it. I
showed him the prints I did from the Epson Stylus Photo R2880, and he was
amazed. He asked if I could print a few of his files on my 2880 to compare
to his existing 2200 prints. I printed out 3 of his images, which happened
to be food shots. We compared the three new prints to his and I wish you
could have seen his eyes - they were as big as saucers. The subtle value
changes and gradients were easily noticeable in all the prints. The color of
the food looked brighter and more appealing. He says to me, "I guess it's
time for me to upgrade."
I have a new outlook on printing at home, even including large 13x19 inch
prints, and I don't have to deal with the damage to my prints from shipping
from a lab.
