Epson hits a new low with this printer
by creativeVC on September 10, 2008
Pros: prints well on matte paper when it works
Cons: Poor ink to print ratio = $$$
Doesn't register ink cartridges

Summary: I ordered this printer from Epson.com the week it was introduced and have had a horrible experience ever since. To start my express delivery option I payed extra for ended up taking 2-3 weeks instead of the 2-3 days then the printer only worked about 1out of 5 print attempts. Then the ink would run out and I would replace it with a new cartridge and it would not register (I wasted almost $100 of ink this way, Epson would not replace the defective ink cartridges) I finally received a new printer after many wasted hours on the phone with support who had less printer knowledge than myself. After being sent a new printer I not only have the same ink problem but this one also prints orange hairpin lines through my entire print even after cleaning the heads this still occurs.
This printer has done the same "not registering ink cartridge trick" on 3 of my colleagues printers also.
Bottom line - don't buy this printer. It's not a headache it's a migrane!8 out of 9 users found this user opinion helpful.

Hiighly recommended mid priced photo printer
by rpjones9 on October 20, 2008
Pros: Outstanding glossy/luster color photos - resolution, clarity, color depth, fidelity & brilliance. Very Good matte photos. More than adequate neutral B/W photos.
Cons: A bit slow printing text from non photo applications. Smaller ink cartridges incease ink cost.

Summary: After 4+ years, my still functional Epson 1270 was a candidate for replacement, given technology advances alone. Based on personal experience with Epson printer reliability and customer service, the choice was the R1900. Features influencing the decision were A3+ (13x19) borderless printing capability with Epson?s K3 Ultra Chrome pigment (long print life) inks, expanded paper choices, gloss/matte paper choices without swapping black inks, high resolution, and color brilliance and fidelity.
Installation was quick and easy. The test prints were made using Epson Premium Glossy, Premium Luster, and Presentation Matte papers, using both the ?Let Printer Manage Color? and ?Let Photoshop Manage Color? (specific paper profiles) settings. Although the supplied Epson ?standard? profiles proved totally acceptable, the free Epson downloadable premium profiles are definitely superior and I will use those for all exhibition quality prints.
Test prints were compared to the same images printed on the Epson 1270 (dye ink) and the Epson R2400, a more expensive pigment ink printer with a different ink configuration which facilitates ?neutral? (no color cast) black & white fine art printing.
Compared to the Stylus 1270, all R1900 prints had better color depth, clarity, fidelity, and brilliance than the 1270 dye ink prints. Very likely the added ?Gloss Optimizer? cartridge of the R1900 contributed to the advantage.
Compared to the R2400, the R1900 color prints were at least equal to the R2400 in most every case. In a few instances the R1900 premium profile gave marginally better results, specifically for skin tones. However, the differences were VERY subtle and could well reflect my own subjective judgment.
With additional black ink cartridges and an ?Advanced B/W? print mode, the R2400 has an edge for the photographer requiring high volumes of exhibition quality B/W prints. However, the R1900 can deliver acceptably neutral B/W prints (especially using the Epson premium profiles). Toned monochrome prints appeared to be dead even between the two printers. I was delighted to discover that the 5% opacity ?slightly brown? toning which I sometimes add for B/W print ?richness? also enhanced the neutrality of the R1900 B/W prints.
For all photographers not needing to print larger than 13x19, or those not requiring large numbers of exhibition B/W prints, I would recommend the R1900 as an excellent choice for a mid-priced photo quality printer.6 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

great printer when it's working. Be careful of the warranty

After printing out around 10 pictures, the black (PK) ink light came on indicating to replace the cartridge. But, when I replaced the cartridge, the light never went out. I thought something was wrong with the cartridge so I purchased another cartridge and install it. The problem didn't go away.
I call Epson Technical Service and they sent me another printer. Instead of replacing my printer with a new printer, I received a refurbished printer. I plug in the refurbished printer hoping that this will solve my problem but it made things worst. Not only did the refurbished printer have the same problem as my printer has but, the cyan ink light never light up when there was no ink inside the printer. This is not good customer service.
Instead of giving up the new printer I bought in order to get a used printer in which I didn't know what was wrong, I sent the refurbish printer back and call Epson that following Monday. The customer relations person stated that the only way I would have received a new printer if I would have turn back the original within 30 days after I purchased it. That didn't make sense to me. I could of turn it back where I bought it from and received my money back. So now I have two choices. I can give up the printer I bought and received a refurbished printer or, I can keep my printer and have it repair at some local store.
I hope Epson change their policy on people who brought a printer within 90 days instead of 30 days. Since printing a picture is expensive (paying for the ink and paper) and this printer only prints pictures, 30 days is not enough time to determine if the printer performs as Epson stated on their website.6 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Could be better, could be worse
by kalki1313 on March 12, 2008
Pros: great color prints, fairly compact for a 13x19 printer

Summary: I purchased to to replace my R800 printer and to be honest I was expecting more than I got. I compared prints between the two and realized that out of the box, the R1900 isn't as good. I had to work on adjusting both Photoshop and the Epson print software to find the best balance for what I am printing (mostly landscapes and portraits). I still find the prints I am getting to be softer than on my old R800 though the oranges are indeed better with a dedicated ink cartridge. B&W prints have a blue cast which is typical for these pigment printers. I suspect that the printer needs further adjusting to get it to where I expect it to be.

Disappointing printer and support
by thomas9070 on September 3, 2008
Pros: The price was right for a pigment based ink printer
Cons: Color output of this printer is dull and drab and takes an inordinate amount of adjustment to get a decent picture. Every picture needs to get printed 2-3 times until it is accurate. Efforts to get help from Epson have gone unheeded.
Summary: This is not a priinter for people serious about photo printing.

Excellent photo printer

Summary: This is a great printer; I am a novice photographer and I was disappointed in my HP 8450 for photo printing. I carefully considered the R1900 and the Canon 9900. The Epson reputation and the difference in longevity of prints sold me on the Epson. I use Photoshop Elements 6 and Corel Painter Essentials 4. The combination of the two software with the printer has allowed me to create some neat stuff - and when printed out on the R1900 - they look great. I'm am excited about trying the roll canvas as we took some great shots on vacation (Canon G9, 12mp) and we've created some very cool art-type prints - as large as 11x14 with essentially perfect color reproduction and clarity. A really great printer.
As a follow up on the R1900, the printer still produces excellent quality prints but I had to get a replacement R1900 from Epson as the Red and Blk ink cartridge would indicate they were NOT Epson cartridges and would not give me a reading, even though I only purchase genuine Epson cartridges. The replacement (refurbished) has worked well for the past 15 months but now it's telling me I have a non-Epson cartridge in the red tank again. I haven't contacted Epson yet regarding this issue. I have not had any problems with quality of prints in any size - I work with CS4.
Updated on Sep 29, 2009
Updated on Feb 28, 2011As a follow up to my past reviews, the R1900 continues to be an excellent printer for my uses. As I have continued to expand my interest and knowledge in photography - the R1900 allows me to deliver very high quality prints on a variety of papers. I only use either Epson paper or Red River paper; as for inks, I only use Epson replacement cartridges. I use PS CS5 and Corel Painter 11 as my photo image processors.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Very impressed after some setup trials

Summary: I use a Mac running 10.4, print using Photos Shop Elements. First few prints not good until I re-read documentation for both products. Implemented suggested settings (let Elements control printing) and use Epson papers exclusively. Results are excellent. I use Premium Photo Paper Glossy 4x6 and 8x10 for borderless prints. My use is to print home / family shots taken with a Panasonic 8 mega-pixel digital camera, shots are printed with the camera's embedded color profile.
Problem has been noted about printer not recognizing replacement ink cartridges, have not had this problem but I turn printer off and on to have it read the new inks. Have not had any problems with the Mac and the printer utility program that reads ink levels and performs other printer functions such as cleaning and alignment. Here again, if changes have been made to the printer, such as replacing inks, I cycle the printer power and restart the utility program.
Did have to go in and create a profile for plain-paper use on my Mac G4. Make sure Use Gloss Optimizer is turned off in this profile.
Granted, I don't print for commercial or gallery applications. I print for family and friends, plus occasional work for the business I work for. For this type of application the output of the R1900 is excellent and cost effective. The initial set-up took some trial-and-error printing and a careful look at the various settings available through both the printer driver and Photoshop Elements printing functions, but once through that I have been very impressed with the quality of the prints I get. I have standardized on Epson papers for best results, having tried HP and Kodak papers as well.
On the Mac set-up, I first go to Page Setup. select the printer, paper type, and orientation, then use the Print function from Elements to use the correct profile - Plain paper or Standard - then Print to set the number of copies and other options. Note: The "Fit On Page" option will do some auto cropping, if you have already cropped the image you may loose some area. I've taken to a bit looser cropping to avoid this.
The printer is a tool, and like most tools, requires some work and experience to get the best out of it. I am now to the point where I load the paper of choice, bring up my photos to print, make a couple selections in the print process (profile and quantity) and sit back while the R1900 produces excellent 4x6 or 8x10 prints.
Granted I am not a power user. However, if you have the patience to set up the printer properly it will work as advertised. I would recommend the R1900 for families who takes a lot of digital shots and are looking for high-quality output. This printer is probably capable of much more than I ask of it, but I am a very satisfied user after the 4 months or so I have had it, and have printed about 100 each 4x6 photos and another 50 or so 8x10 prints. I also use the printer for my daily print needs, letters and so on.
Remembering back to my darkroom days when printing CibaChrome from transparencies, I never dreaded one day I could get this kind of quality from a desktop printer. Unless you have extremely demanding printing requirements, the R1900 is a good choice for small volume printing, but does require patience to set up and configure for best results.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

A Great Photo Printer
by rempson on October 4, 2009
Pros: Fantastic glossy out-put! Prints look like they came from the lab - skin tone is excellent. Very smooth printing. Looking forward to many years of photo printing with this unit. I use Red River papers and they work excellent together.
Cons: None thus far. Maybe larger ink cartridges (?) although I recently read that Epson used the smaller ink cartridges because for the hobbyist who might not use as much ink as the professional, and the smaller tanks keeps the inks "fresher".
Summary: Recently purchased this unit to replace my Epson 1400. The skin tones and colors are superb on this printer. I got a great deal on it - $404 with an ...

Gorgeous pictures
by nkh on November 9, 2009
Pros: I grew progressively dissatisfied with the quality of photos printed by my HP Photosmart. The Epson R-1900 produces prints equal to those of a photo lab.
Cons: Very little. Set-up was a snap. I do believe, however, that Epson should have included a USB cable (or cables) in its carton.
Summary: This printer exceeds my expectations in the quality of photographs it yields.

Updated on Nov 11, 2009Summary: This printer exceeds my expectations in the quality of photographs it yields.
Like most printer-makers, Epson insists its own photo paper will produce better prints than any other. It's not true. I've printed the same photos on Epson Premium Glossy, HP Glossy, and Office Depot Professional and there is no perctible difference between any of them.
Updated on Nov 11, 2009
Updated on Nov 11, 2009NOTE: I ordered this printer from Staples on-line. When I opened the carton I found the envelopes holding the ink cartridges were empty. I immediately e-mailed Staples and objected that I had been sent a used (perhaps demo) printer. Staples apologized and had an "exchange" (or replacement) printer delivered to my door the next business day. That service, plus the $150 rebate and I am a happy buyer.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excellent printer for the price
by Bill Petros on October 31, 2009
Pros: Solid, sturdy printer. Prints both text and photos superbly. Color prints are bright, sharp, and almost perfect. The $150 rebate makes this printer a steal.
Cons: Expensive ink cartridges.
Summary: I highly recommend this printer to both professionals and semi-pros. A great replacement for the Epson 1280.
