The good: The HP 5610 is inexpensive and small, and it prints well.
The bad: The HP 5610 uses expensive ink; has poor scan quality; prints slowly; has no PictBridge port or memory-card readers.
The bottom line: The HP OfficeJet 5610 is affordable and provides most of the home-office basics, but it doesn't stand out from the crowd of better-equipped multifunctions.
The HP OfficeJet 5610 multifunction fits the bill for a home office, although you'll have to compromise on performance and convenience. This $150, do-everything device can scan, copy, print photos and other documents, and send and receive faxes. Unfortunately, it prints slowly and delivers mixed output quality. Digital photo enthusiasts should consider a multifunction printer with memory-card slots and better output quality, such as the Canon Pixma MP130 or the pricier Canon MP760. If your home office demands business-class features but doesn't need color, consider a grayscale laser multifunction printer instead, such as the Samsung SCX-4720F.

I highly recommend this product for faxing, scanning and copying. However, I do not recommend it for printing photos. I still use my HP photosmart to print high quality photos. I was inspired to buy the All-in-One as my husband owns a trucking business and I needed more space on my desk and I wanted to do the company billings a lot faster than having to scan all the Bill of Ladings. With the copier, I can zoom through my work and everyone's happy. After doing a lot of research on this model, I discovered other consumers complaining about the 6510 series in reference to it taking hours to download the software. The solution for that was not to install the extra features. I started downloading the software at around 11:30 AM after going shopping, it was still going at 8:30 PM. So I just cancelled the download, restarted the computer and reinstalled the software again. Everything was done within a matter of 15 minutes or less. My husband really liked the fax features especially blocking unwanted fax numbers. The All-in-One is very easy to use, really reasonable priced and very compact but can handle a lot of work. Hands up for HP and great for me.

I am using this printer in my home office. Right out of the box I found it to be well packed and easy to install. I installed on WinXP Pro and Win2k without any issues. On my home network I was able to share it to a WinXP Home laptop without a problem. When I tested the copy feature it was quite fast. The main reason I purchesed this model and brand over the others in this price range is the built in modem for sending and receiving fax transmissions. Excelent Picture quality and speed! I think i'm in love... another great HP product to add to my collection.
Updated I have used this product for a few weeks now and still have no complaints. I usually find at least on problem with hardware and have not with this.
Updated I love this printer, I have not had a malfunction many reams later. It prints nice pictures also.

Wanted to get an inexpensive printer/copier/scanner/FAX machine for home use. I had initial concerns because I have an older computer (1.8 GHz) with a USB 1.1. I went to a local Best Buy store and talked with their in-house HP rep. Had a couple of questions regarding the use of a FAX machine and how it interacts with a home answering machine. The HP rep was worthless as he didn't know anything about FAX machines and suggested I talk with a Best Buy employee in the department (amazing!) or call HP. After a lot of followup, searching and reading reviews at this site, I purchased the HP 5610. Couldn't pass by the Best Buy 10% off coupon plus their own $30 rebate. Have had HP printers over the past 14 years and they have been very reliable. I did have some reservations though after reading some of the posted comments, so I wanted to pass along my own personal experience for what it's worth.
Set-up was very easy ........ followed the directions to the T. Software loading was very straight forward and took about 12 minutes. Printed a couple of sheets with no problems. It is faster (and quieter) than my older HP 990 Cse printer, so I was happy, although it was probably a little slower than optimal due to my computer specs. Printing envelopes is a chore as you have to remove one tray and empty the blank copy paper to feed the envelopes. My older printer had an envelope feed slot which overrode the blank copy feeder. Copying was a breeze, although it did slightly cut off one edge of the 8 1/2 x 11 form as reported by others. My wife's Lexar printer/copier/scanner does the same thing. Fixed this by setting the custom copying at 95% of the original which very slightly reduces the image, but it's hardly noticeable. Scanner works like a charm. FAX checks out OK, but haven't used it yet. Also bought extra black-n-white and color ink cartridges as the salesperson told me that the unit only comes with "starter" cartridges that run out quickly. The full cartridges are not that expensive - about $18 apiece.
All-in-all, I'm very happy with the HP 5610 so far. It is a lower cost unit, so there is a lot of plastic here and there. If this is unnerving to some, I'd suggest moving up to a higher cost unit. Have had the HP 5610 for 5 days now and it seems to continue the good performance string that I have with HP printing products.

Overall, for $149.99 this is one of the best multifunction printers on the market with a automatic document feeder (adf), i use this for scanning school work and i have already done over 400 scans, it works great, no jams, no hassles no problem, printing is average, great for college student just trying to turn in a paper, simple buttons, simple software setup, only downsize is it saves in two spots for scanning and you just can't save a simple original file, i have been trying still. I recommend of Lexmark X7170 which is same price with ADF, lexmark scanning and printing is worse then this model. I wish there was more network though.

First, let it be known that I am a Technical Nebbish! I can barely spell Fax, and can't maybe mumble out HTML.... I agonized over whose printer would give me the least gray hair, and wouldn't give me some dread disease that there isn't a RX commercial for on Televison. First it was Brother, Then Epson, finally HP My choice was made after visiting my local BestBuy on-site store where I met with an Epson Rep, whose "All-in Ones" had "smudge proof inks".... The HP rep was pissy, and argued with me about "Have I ever seen a fax withourt a modem"??? My comment was, "I'm the one who DOESN'T Know about these things..." Went across the street to CompUsa, met with another HP rep, "UUHHHH", OK..... called HP Pre-Sales, Finally, intelligent Life...., The rep and I talked finally about capacity of copies per month, 5610 does about 1500 a month VS the 6200, 3k a month... I also have a 5 year old Photosmart P1100 that sat idle for about 3 years, put new carts in, updated the drivers (Thanks HP), and it woiks just fine! Why BestBuy?? They would not knock off the seven buck difference from Circuit City, but they had the best EXTENDED Warranty... 3 years for 30 bucks...., Bring it into the store, they ship it off if needed, no muss no fuss. That's if they CANNOT fix it on-site. Set-up was so simple, followed to the letter whatever the pre-manual sheet said, loaded "Custom" install, can load the rest later...Took a while, but I checked e-mail while it was loading, no biggie. It even sets the clock and calendar for me (Small Thing) but hey, one less thing to deal with. Have not used Fax or Scan yet, set-up again no hassle, passed self-test. Yes it's noisy, and when I printed using "Fast Draft" it took about 2 seconds to print a full page of print, the "Page Guide" was not down, causing the page to "Shoot Across the Room". FAST,FAST Squared. Not as "Sexy" as Epson or Canon, but then neither am I. Moderate footprint, sturdy enougjh for Home/Home Office Use, paper will jam if paper is pushed too far in intake slot "Says so in the book", I like the idea of 2 different black ink carts, but a 2.00 difference for 1/2 the ink?? Add the Photo cart for 6 ink color, but using plain jane base paper, colors are wonderful, even on draft, quick dry, etc. Good solid printer for moderate use, and those who hate set-up hassles. I welcome any others who've had either good or bad experiences (But after looking at some of those reviews, I can see why problems were encountered)

HP must be owned by MS because they seem to think we need copious amounts of substandard software with our devices. Just give me a printer/fax/copier/scanner that actually PRINTS/FAXES/COPIES/and SCANS and dispense with the 100's of mb of useless software that eats up my memory even when the thing is off! Never use this piece unless you want to mount it on your wall as an expensive artsy techno-display for conversation. Had an HP scanner awhile ago on a completely seperate system that never worked either. Waste of money. I'd even buy a Lexmark before another HP.

I have to say that this printer is excellent despite CNET giving it a 6.1 rating. CNET is starting to write a lot of bias reviews. This is exactly the kind of thing they did with the HP(who would've guessed) Pavilion dv6000t notebook. They take a great product and, not having many HP ads on the site, destroy (strong word, maybe too strong) the product's reputation. Instead of giving the consumers who turn to this site for advice on what to buy real facts and advice, CNET gives them a contracted opinion. What does this mean? Another company thats competing with HP(or for that matter, any other company) for the market pays CNET to post bogus reviews and bash on good quality products. CNET did a really good job destroying this printer's pros, but in a last effort, I will try and write a REAL review for anyone out there.
CNET's pros: "The HP 5610 is inexpensive and small, and it prints well." Thanks for stating the obvious, CNET. of course it's inexpensive. I don't know any other company that offers an All-In-One this good at $94.99(at Costco). And to tell you the truth(which is what I'm trying to do), It prints EXTREMELY GOOD, not WELL.
CNET's cons: "The HP 5610 uses expensive ink; has poor scan quality; prints slowly; has no PictBridge port or memory-card readers." Another error in CNET's review. This printer uses high capacity ink cartridges that are $16.99(again, at Costco). If you can't spare 17 bucks for an ink cartridge, what are you doing surfing CNET when you should look for a better job.(no offense) Also, the scan quality is OKAY, at a max resolution of 1200X2400 dpi. CNET states that it prints slowly. Sure it might not print at 60 ppm black like a $3000 laser printer might, but at 20 ppm black and 13 ppm color, its fast for a 95 dollar printer. Moving on.
Quote, "Digital photo enthusiasts should consider a multifunction printer with memory-card slots and better output quality, such as the Canon Pixma MP130 or the pricier Canon MP760." They're advertising TWO Canon printers. This is what I meant by the contracted opinion thing above.
Quote, "If your home office demands business-class features but doesn't need color, consider a grayscale laser multifunction printer instead, such as the Samsung SCX-4720F." No explaination necessary.
Qoute, "However, this model gives short shrift to some basic features. For instance, the output tray sits on top of the input tray, so you'll have to remove completed prints and lift the tray out before adding or changing paper." A BASIC feature!!??? Come on!!! HP does this because to some, its more convenient. Now for the lazy Elsa Wenzel, who is afraid to pick up a couple of sheets of paper out to put paper into the input tray, it's not that hard. You put your hand around the top papers and grip it. You then pick up the papers and put them somewhere else. Then refill. Was that so hard?
"This printer can work with black, ordinary color and photo inks, but because it holds only two of them at a time, you'll have to swap the black and photo ink tanks when you switch between printing photos and text documents." Hey genious, keep a color and a black cartridge in so you DON'T have to keep changing cartridges.
"The control panel of the HP OfficeJet 5610 conveniently divides fax and copy functions into separate areas, although the 16-by-2-character LCD lacks backlighting." Yeah, most people don't print in the dark.
note:I am pretty lazy and won't argue some points. Sorry.
"It printed text at a poky 4.08ppm (pages per minute), lagging behind the Lexmark X3350's 7.43ppm." Last I checked, the Lexmark wasn't an all in one. This is an All-In-One review, right?
"We gave the HP OfficeJet 5610 high marks for its print quality, as it turned out text that was sharp, clean, black, and legible at small point sizes" The "Senior Editor" contradicts herself. It clearly states that it prints WELL, not HIGH MARKS FOR PRINT QUALITY.
These were all of the mistakes I could find in their review. At least on the first post. Now, to give everyone a review you can trust. Not really, these are more of specs from Costco's site. Thanks Costco.
Increase your productivity with the speed and efficiency of the HP Officejet 5610xi. Now you can do it all ? print, fax, copy and scan ? from this compact, versatile all-in-one solution from HP. Create professional presentations and brochures with laser-quality black text, or print and copy color documents. Send important faxes quickly and eliminate unwanted faxes.
Conveniently copy, scan and fax multiple pages with the 25-sheet auto document feeder. Get the job done quickly with print and copy speeds up to 20 ppm black, up to 13 ppm color. As always, count on HP reliability for consistent performance.

That's all for me today. Thank you for reading this review and please comment on it. Maybe we can get CNET to change their review into an accurate one.
Therefore, the HP Officejet 5610 is an overall good printer with a small price tag and is pack loaded with features and that's why it won the Thiagohf113 Editor's Choice.

I purchased a 5610 from a reputable store. Got it home and it would not calibrate the ink cartridges. I called HP, and after sitting on the phone for 30 minutes, they agreed that I wasn't completely clueless and decided to ship me a replacement unit because the first one was "defective." Fast forward 10 days later. I received my replacement unit. I hooked it up, it calibrated the cartridges, but now everytime it prints a document, the cartridge carrier gets stuck! I called HP AGAIN and after 30 more minutes of my life I will never get back, they AGAIN said the unit was "defective." So, I am now shipping back the original unit tomorrow and they are shipping me a replacement for my replacement. That's right, if you're keeping score at home, this is my third 5610 All-in-One printer in less than two weeks. I will update this review if the third one is acceptable.
Bottom line: Spend the extra money, get a better model.
Updated Just when I was starting to think it was going to take sacrificing a live chicken to appease the spirits to allow me to have a properly working 5610, HP delivered with my second replacement printer. This one works fine. No problems...

What a piece of Crap!! We used this unit only periodically, so I had changed the cartridges only once before this unit crapped out. Some sort of '0x' error message on the unit's front panel. HP has all sorts of reset codes & procedures to try to reboot the firmware, but it didn't matter. In dealing with HPs' customer service and eventually being assigned to case managers, they pretty much told me I was crap-out-of-luck. Guy was kinda rude to me too, but that's another story.

Feedback: purchased this machine at Costco about a year ago. After six months it began dual printing anything that had color in it. For example, it would print the word "dog" like this "ddoogg". I called tech support twice and both times they were unable to help and attributed the problem to a "hardware issue." It was clear to me the technicians were merely an offshore telephone outfit following a script. In the end they recommended I upgrade to a new machine or bring the machine in for servicing. I cannot recommend this product.
