The HP Photosmart D7460 offers a lot of great features at a decent price. For $180, you get a network-ready printer (wireless too!) with a handy touch screen that makes navigating menus a breeze. While we liked using this model, its performance gives us pause. Although it was speedy with text prints, it was much more pokey with 4x6 photo prints, and the print quality could use some tweaking. The Photosmart D7460 is a good fit for casual home users who want a photo-oriented general-purpose printer that can produce decent snapshots as well as fast text prints. If you don't mind slow text prints, check out the Epson Stylus R380: it makes quick work of 4x6 photos and offers the add feature of printing directly on specially coated CDs and DVDs. It's not networked, however.

Design
The HP Photosmart D7460 looks a lot like other members of the Photosmart printer line. The brushed-silver-and-white body stands 18.2 inches wide, 15.3 inches deep, and 6.8 inches tall, and weighs a very manageable 17.6 pounds. Protected behind a clear plastic door live four memory card slots that accept most types of cards; some card types require an adapter, which is not included. The front-mounted USB port is PictBridge-enabled, which means you can print directly from PictBridge cameras. You can also use it to connect and print from storage devices such as USB thumb drives.

Although this printer does resembled older Photosmart models, the major difference is the distinct lack of buttons on the user interface. The reason for this is that the 3.5-inch color LCD is a touch screen. HP has moved most of the direct-print capabilities and functions to the touch screen, leaving the control panel clean. The only buttons are the cancel, red-eye removal, and print photos buttons. The touch screen is mounted in a panel that swivels through a 90-degree range, letting you optimize the viewing angle. The screen is large, colorful, and responsive.

The Photosmart D7460's paper-handling design is typical of HP's Photosmart printers. The unit comprises the output tray and two input trays. The main input tray sits at the bottom and pulls out for easy loading. Adjustable paper guides allow you to load various paper sizes--as many as 100 sheets of plain paper. Immediately above the main tray is the dedicate photo paper tray that holds 4x6 sheets and smaller. The nice thing about this paper tray is that it engages automatically, so you don't have to push it in manually in order to print from that tray. Above both input trays is the output tray, with an extendable arm for corralling long prints. A clear window lets you see if the photo paper tray is empty, while the output tray flips up for loading photo paper.

This printer uses six-color printing, with individual ink cartridges for less waste. The 10mL black cartridge costs $18 to replace and prints roughly 480 pages. Each color tank holds 4mL and costs $10 to replace. The number of prints each can produce varies by color, as some colors are more commonly used than others. For example, the light magenta and light cyan are rated to print more pages because they're used less often than the regular magenta and cyan. Based on HP's estimates of the number of pages produced per cartridge, we estimate that a black-only page costs about 2.6 cents and a full-color (six colors) page costs about 10.3 cents--both costs are good. Unfortunately, HP does not offer XL versions of these cartridges for this printer.

Features
The Photosmart D7460 not only comes network-ready, but it offers both wired (Ethernet) and wireless (802.11g) connectivity to boot. A wireless setup wizard will search your area for available networks and walk you through the process of connecting to one. A small, blue LED on the front of the printer lights when you're connected wirelessly. This model does not come with an auto duplexer, but HP does offer an optional add-on unit. If you don't care to purchase the auto duplexer, the printer driver will assist you with manual duplex operations.

As mentioned above, you can print directly from a PictBridge camera, a memory card, or a USB storage device. The methods for printing from the latter two are the same. When you plug in either one, the touch screen switches to the Photosmart Express screen. Here, you can start by choosing View, Print, Create, Share, or Save. The View option automatically pulls up a nine-image thumbnail view. You can simply touch one of the images to zoom in on it, or scroll through your images, nine at a time. At this point, you can print all the images by pressing Print Photos button on the printer. Happily, the D7460 asks you to verify that you really want to do this. If you choose to zoom in on an individual photo, you can preview the print or edit the image. Edit options include rotate, crop, red-eye removal, photo fix, add frame, brightness, and color effect. As you step through the images, you can print them individually or go back and add images to the batch before printing.

If, from the main screen, you select Print, the wizard starts you off by asking you to select a print layout. Options include 4x6, 5x7, 8.5x11, and multi-image layouts on 8.5x11 paper, including an index. Because the D7460 lacks a scanner, the index is for reference only (file names are included). You can fit as many as 63 images on one sheet. After you select the layout, the procedure is the same as outlined above.

The Create option lets you make album pages for a photo album, create panorama prints, print wallet-size and passport photos, and make still prints from your videos. You can play through the video on the screen and stop it at the frame you want printed. Of course, the print quality won't be as good as prints of photos, because video resolution is lower, but it's still a nifty feature.

The Share and Save options both direct you to your PC, where the HP Photosmart Essential software pops up. You can share via HP's Snapfish service or via e-mail. The former is recommended if you're sharing a large number of files, but the latter is fine for a couple of images.

Finally, the Save option lets you transfer images and videos from a memory card or flash drive to your PC. You can't transfer images between a memory card and flash drive, though, as you can on the Epson Stylus R380.

Performance
In CNET Labs' test, the HP Photosmart D7460 proved to be fast with text prints, but slow with 4x6 photo prints. It was the fastest at text prints, by far, of comparable photo inkjet printers, with a score of 6.33 pages per minute. Unfortunately, it dropped the ball with 4x6 photo prints, producing only 0.47 of a page per minute, at least three times slower than both the Canon Pixma iP6700D and the Epson Stylus Photo R380.

The Photosmart D7460 did a decent job with text prints: The black were richly dark, and the characters were well formed, but we noticed wicking problems, even with HP's own inkjet paper. The color graphics print showed the same issues with wicking, though colors looked pretty good, if a little on the dull side. The photo elements were detailed, but we saw some graininess in color blocks. We liked the detail and the way the colors popped in the 4x6 photo prints but were a bit distracted by the graininess we noticed in faces. Overall, the Photosmart D7460's print quality was pretty good, definitely good enough for casual home users who want to print snapshots and the occasional text print.

Summary: If you don't know how to setup and modify a wireless network, then DON'T buy a wireless printer. I've read too many reviews whining about wireless functionality of HP wireless printers. Basically, it boils down to operator ignorance. My D7460 has never lost connectivity with the network. I avoided this by setting up a static IP in lieu of an automatic DHCP.

I've also read too many reviews whining about HP printer software. Yes, I agree the software is HUGE. The fix? When installing the HP printer software, do an ADVANCED INSTALL and only install the HP drivers only and skip the rest of the HP software. Don't just blindly hit NEXT when you install any software. Go slow and install only the software you desire to use. I did this and the printer works great with no slow down in performance in my PC.

There are too many network novices out there who are quick to blame HP for their own ignorance and failures. Do some research before you jump into wireless networks and spend less time griping online about it.

The D7460 uses six ink cartridges. This is much better than tri-color cartridges. It allows you to replace only the ink you use. Go to Costco or BJ's to get replacement ink, as their prices are the best.

The D7460 allows you to preload 8.5x11 paper and 4x6 photo paper simultaneously. The photo paper is cheap and the printing is fast.

Ink and photo paper prices are cheap enough now to justify bulk photo printing at home in lieu of uploading it to a digital photo printing service (i.e. Wal-mart).

This printer is GREAT and the wireless functionality is fantastic. I strongly recommend this printer.

Summary: I purchased this printer to replace my old Canon IP90 printer. It was a bit of a shift to go from a portible printer to a full size one and this one is very FULL SIZED. The card reader and USB reader are quite handy as is the two tray system (one for smaller photo paper and one for normal sized paper) and the laser operated internal calibration. The touch screen is a very nice feature and allows for the full monitoring and use of the printer without a computer attached (except for the help feature which pulls up on an attached computer). The print quailty is good but oddly I think it was better on my IP90 which had incredible quailty for a portable printer. Most importantly for me this printer utilized 6 ink cartridges. This reduces the wasted ink and corresponding cost. I do notice that the yellow cartridge seems to be the most frequent to go out, but that may be the result of the kind of images i am printing. The networking features are great and I have to say I rather enjoy being able to connect both my MacBook Pro and my Acer Ferrari to the same printer at the same time without any wires. Overall this is a solid printer and will serve most well, especially those with many computers.

Summary: Opening the box, I was disappointed with HP cutting corners not including a USB cable and with the cheapness of the power cable. Since the printer has no printer cable port (USB only), I was forced to connect wireless by my WIFI network. It would be nice to also have it connected via USB so that, if my WIFI network went down, I wouldn't also loose my ability to print. Since HP was to cheap to include one, I will have to buy one myself. If I wanted to save every possible penny by putting up with missing parts/cables, I would have bought a printer off eBay. The (over) commitment to inexpensive also shows with the power cord which was a ridiculously short few inches from plug to transformer. The (cheap) cord from the transformer to the printer was longer but the short AC cord forced me to mount the transformer on the back of my desk with duct tape because the cable wasn't long enough to reach from the power strip through the hole in the desk to the printer area--a reasonably short distance away. The ease of setup was impressive although the software was slow installing. If you want to print photos and text and need an all around printer, this is a very good one. If you want top quality photos or professional looking text documents, there are probably better options. I first printed a city scene. The print time was a bit slow but the rendering was nice. The next test was a close-up face shot. The blacks in the background were impressively deep but the skin tones were not true to the monitor, biasing slightly towards yellows and reds. Could this be a monitor calibration issue? Its possible but without an expensive calibration kit, I trust my $900 monitor out the box more than a $150 printer. Text printed much faster. It looked reasonably crisp at first glance but close examination reals slight smudging and artifacts. These were most noticable when printing an email from Outlook. The black line Outlook prints across the top of an email in the default view was definately more gray then black and more fuzzy than crisp. Feature wise, the touch screen is nice, providing detailed feedback instead of the blinking light on my old Canon iP400 which provided no information except to check the computer for the detailed error message. The ability to have paper and photo paper always loaded and have the printer automatically switch between them is very nice. I can also see how the ability to insert memory card, select photos from the memory screen, and even do very basic editing such as red-eye reduction all from the printer's touch screen would be very popular. I can't see ever using it because I do more advance touch ups in photoshop but its advanced enough that should your computer ever crash, you could select and print some of your raw shots before you fix/replace your PC. The features are 9+. Photo quality 7-8. Text quality 6-7. Quality 5. This leaves me to say, the HP Photosmart is pretty good at everything it does but not exceptional at anything it does.

This printer by far was the best priced wireless printer we found. ($159.00 at Staples). It is also sharp looking, and very easy to use.
The D7460?s photo quality seems comparable to my last printer, a cannon i860 which had very good reviews. I think the text documents print just fine.
If you?re looking for a printer for your home and have a wireless network, print mostly text documents and an occasional photo, this is the printer to buy.

Summary: This is a great printer for the price. If you are looking for a printer for home pictures, this one will make you happy! The setup of the wireless is a little confusing, especially if you have a home network. I spent half a day getting the wireless to work. I uninstalled and reinstalled 4 times. What I discovered is that if you have a home wireless network, you must install the software on the main computer first, then you can put it on seconday computers. If you don't, for some reason, it will not find the printer. Once I got it working, it has been fine. The cost of ink is very reasonable.

Summary: I bought my printer about a month ago and have loved it since it came out of the box. It is easy to setup when you first install everything and the print quality is great. This prints documents a little slower than I'd like, but I can live with it. My wife and I print photos a lot and the quality of prints is awesome, even on standard print settings. I like the built in 4x6 print tray that automatically loads that paper and keeps me from having to swap out sheets and manually load photo paper all the time. The print speed is the only reason I didn't rate this a 10. I highly recommend this printer if you are you like to print your own photos from home and want an easy to setup network printer. Way to go HP!

Summary: I had a previous HP Photosmart printer that died on me for reasons unknown and quite frankly, I was bitter towards HP. It was 2.5 years old and IMHO should have lasted longer. I really did not want to buy another HP product.

So I went looking for a new printer. I have 4 computers in the house, so I wanted LAN connectivity, WiFi if possible, decent pics, Pic Bridge and to be able to use mem sticks. My tastes were bending towards Canon, but they do not offer decent LAN connections, and the other printer manufacturers seemed more directed to all in one printers that I did not need. So, after much consternation, I decided on the 7460. I gotta say wow what a difference a couple of years make. It was easy to set up all my comps on it via wifi (just run the disk on each comp), pictures are incredible, including from mem sticks, and it has a relatively small footprint. After 12 4X6 prints, ink usage has not even registered, but I will reserve judgement on that. My only real con is that the manual seems to say to not use the CD to set up the WiFi. After about 10 min of fiddling, I used it and away it went. I even got my XP and Vista machines to use it!

So, so far excellent! I will update if it changes, but so far, it has my recommendation.

Summary: I purchased this printer, spent an hour on the tele with support, (they hung up on me). My question to them was"Why does this printer us up all you majenta ink when printing black text? Had the printer for about a week and went through the starter in plus 2 more black cartridges, 1 yellow, and 2 darker blue, and 2 majenta. All I printed was black text. When the printer told me to replace the black cartridge after printing about 60 - 80 documents all black text, I packed it up and returned it. I've spent over $200 on ink!
