Excellent choice for text and photos
by daniel on March 11, 2005
Pros: Quiet, duplex printing, great quality, low ink cost

Summary: I was saddened when my 6 or 7 year old Epson 750 died, and after reading glowing reviews for the IP4000 at many sites (Tom's Hardware has a great comparison of 6 or so photo inkjets) I jumped for the IP4000.....glad I did. It prints great text and REAL photographs. The duplex (printing on both sides of the paper) feature is cool and saves paper and paper clutter. It's quiet and according to other reviewers and Tom's, the ink cost is the best around. Setup was easy....took about 20-30 minutes from opening the box to printing. I really like it. Great inexpensive choice for both text and photos.

Fast, excellent text, excellent photos, prints cd/dvd with a simple mod, low cost ink
by Knightcrawler on June 22, 2005
Pros: Fast, excellent text, excellent photos, prints cd/dvd with a simple mod, low cost ink, awesome black look
Cons: Software isn't that great although I do love the cd label print software.
Summary: The text quality is nearly laser like. Even in draft mode the text is very clear with no feathering and it's very fast at 25 ppm.
Auto duplexing is ...Summary: The text quality is nearly laser like. Even in draft mode the text is very clear with no feathering and it's very fast at 25 ppm.
Auto duplexing is very useful and can save a lot of paper for reports since it prints on both sides.
Two paper feeders are essiential with the different paper today. I put regular paper in the top feeder and photo paper in the bottom. The bottom feeder is great and easy to use for all kinds of different paper.
The PictBridge is going to be uninversal so having it is standard. Most new camera's have this feature.
Auto-off saves power and wear and tear, I have it set for 15 minutes this is great cause I usually forget to turn the printer off.
Direct prints to inkjet printable cd/dvd's with a simple mod = pixma.cjb.net
The 5 inks system is great way to get fantastic photos and razor sharp text.7 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great Family Printer for the buck!
Pros: You get exactly what you pay for, and Best Buy had it the day after Christmas for $119.00. Photos are excellent quality, even when comparing to a Canon Selphy Photo Printer. True the text printing is not "laser-like", however who examines a document 3-
Cons: Personally for me I have no cons for this printer, because you must take into account the great price you pay. Another reviewer said it best, "You get what you paid for.". I used to work for a computer retailer, and I didn't like Canon because of the iss

Summary: I read all the reviews on this product, here and there. I was sold based on this price range. I replaced it with my 3 year old Epson 785EXP. Of coarse, after 3 years of newer photo technology I should expect some printer improvements. All I can say is the photo quality from 10 inches+ away, is fabulous. Just like they came from the Lab!

Excellent and reliable printer.

Summary: I got this Canon IP4000 becasue I had a useless HP 450 Deskjet that had serious feeding problems. After vowing never to get HP again, I got Canon knowing they are reliable and last many years, never going wrong.
The external part of the Cannon IP4000 does look cheap and plastic, but the internal printing mechanism is very sound, strong and reliable. The cost of running is very low as you have separtate ink cartriges that hold a lot of ink and are very cheap. They are also in transparent cases so you can see how much ink is in there.
Printing ordinary black ink documents is excellent. This is the best printer I have ever had for this. It is fast and reliable.
The Canon IP4000 has been built to last. (The printing mechanism is better than other printer makes I have spent hundreds on !)
However, the quality of colour printing on paper is not so good. You get jagged lines on curves and can see fine dots when you look closely, particularly on the blue ink. The quality of photo printing on the photo paper didn't impress me either, but then I've never had a photo printer before and maybe I was expecting too much. I would prefer to get my photos printed by a professonal using professional equipment. The photos certainly don't look as crisp as the ones in the adverts! But that's the same for all photo printers I think.
I am comparing this colour printing with the HP colour print outs I still have, which are excellent (however the HP printer couldn't even feed itself, so to get one piece of paper printed took to much time and hassle attempting to push the paper in manually it just was not workable and can turn the most mild mannered person into a borderline psychopath!)
Anyway, the HP colour light blue for example is nice and fresh with a perfectly smooth quality and smooth lines too. The Canon light blue however, is a dirty colour and shows dots and jagged lines, even when on 'best' print.
Over all, the most important thing for me in a printer is that it prints reliably and will not go wrong, have feeding problems or break. Canon is without doubt the best printer make for reliablity and durablity on this. It is also the best printer for cost efficiency. This applies to this printer, so I have given this a 7.
If you're looking for the best colour photo printer and don't mind the headache of having a printer that will not work properly and you can cope with the probablity of wasting your money on an expensive machine that will die after a year of progressive troubles, then get HP or Epson. (I wouldn't if I were you though. Just get a Canon printer and send your photos to be done by a professional, they are better than an HP or Epson anyway.)Updated
I've written a review on this once before (see history) and I like the printer even more. It is even better quality than I thought! Fantastic. Excellent quality. The best buy you will find. Thank goodness! No more head aches with bad HP or Epson printers. 10 out of 10.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Flaws for use with Macs

Summary: Looks quite nice and prints quite fast but that's just the basic stuff. The duplex printing and the networking simply don't work on the Mac. Duplex printing returned a silly error message about a non-existent paper jam. And I couldn't get it to print from my camera using the direct camera socket. Canon "Support" gave me useless replies to my enquiries and suggested I buy a new printserver/router from Silex but wouldn't even state that a Silex printserver would work! That's a good way to lose friends.

Perfect Cost vs. Quality balance

Summary: This printer should be on the top of your list if you are looking for a good photo printer that can also do a fine job at text printing, while keeping a budget in mind.
I was a little concerned about usability at first, only because of the "plastic" look and feel of the printer.
However, upon opening the box and setting the printer up, I was immediately impressed with the quality of how the printer is built on the inside and how it handles paper when printing.
The output (most important part) is rock solid with both photos and text printed in excellent quality.
And, the speed is absolutely amazing. I find myself printing more often, just because it prints such great quality, so quickly. A very respectable 4x6 print can be completed in 36 sec.!!4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Perfect Printer for Perfect Price

Summary: This printer has proven its value several times over. The double sided printing is useful when trying to save paper. The auto on and off capability is nice to save power. The dual paper feeders allows for photo paper to be placed in the printer without dust collecting on the paper. The seperate ink tanks keeps the price of inks down to a reasonable price. Photos have come out great on the sample glossy paper. Both text and photos print suprisingly fast. I would recommend this printer for those who have no need for a scanner or a copier. I have no problems with the printer and the software provided does not take up much valuable computer resources and the amount of software is relavitvely small also. I got this printer for a little over a hundred bucks at circuit city with some type of online rebate.

Summary: I am very happy with this printer. After suffering from one of the HP products, this is great. Good price, fast photo printing, independent inks, laser style paper tray, prints my personal cheques very nicely, very easy to use photo print software, easy setup, tray selector on the printer, convenient shape - can close the extra feeder on top to make it flat, no gimmicks. The only downside I found so far is the a bit slow warm up and it goes to "sleep" quickly too - I wonder if I can change the sleep part.

Specifications
- Manufacturer: Canon USA
- Part number: 9317A001
- Description: If you're looking for outstanding quality, high speed and advanced convenience features, the Canon Pixma iP4000 Photo Printer is ideal. Its ContrastPLUS 5-color ink system with four dye-based inks plus a pigment-based black ink produces true-life photos with improved color saturation and contrast along with laser-quality text. Plus, it achieves a resolution of up to 4800 x 1200 color dpi, for exceptional detail and photo-realism. Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a high-performance 1,856-nozzle print head that ejects consistent, prescribed-volume droplets as small as 2 picoliters. Simply put: more nozzles with higher accuracy equal better results at impressive speeds. You can even produce edge-to-edge borderless photos in 4 x 6, 5 x 7 and 8.5 x 11 in. sizes, with the look and feel of traditional photographs. Using the Pixma iP4000 Photo Printer is fast and easy. How fast? It can produce up to 25 ppm in black and up to 17 ppm in color, and a 4" x 6" borderless print takes only 36 seconds. How easy? With direct photo printing, you can even print without a computer: simply connect any PictBridge-compatible digital camera or DV camcorder, and print! To help reduce printing costs, this efficient system has five individual ink tanks that let you replace only the color that runs out, rather than an entire cartridge containing unused ink. Plus, a unique low-ink sensor alerts you when ink levels are low, so you are prepared to just drop in a new tank as needed.
