Worked for 1 year then quit
Pros: Great drive, good value, fast, sleak, etc. When it died on me after 1 year they replaced it promptly under warranty.
Cons: So yeah, this drive died on me.. I lost a good 80gb worth of data I would have rather held on to, and no i didn't have a lot of important stuff backed up. But WD eased my frustration by sending me a new one quickly.

Cons: Failed after about 8 months....installed it as a second hard drive for my picture & video files....now I can't retrieve them! Very upset! Will not buy another WD drive.

Summary: I have used Western Digital 40GB, 60GB, 80GB and 120GB drives in computers. I presently have a 120GB with a 80GB back up. The drives work well together. Hundreds of giga bytes of data has been passed between these drives as I have processed DVD videos of our family. All of my WD drives have performed well. The only reason I replaced them is my need for--More Storage!

Pros: Lasted 2.5 years of very occassional use.
Cons: About three times over the life of this drive, file system erroirs were reported on bootup. Sure wIsh i had took these warnings more seriously.

Summary: Ironically I bought this disk to backup some important data which is now all lost. Even more ironically, i still have a seven or eight year old 1.2GB drive thats used for swap in this machine and still going strong. My main system drive is a 10GB WD somewhere inbetween age wise and still fine knock on wood. Cant understand why this 120GB drive, which was only used for archive, would be the first to go. It was made in Malaysia on 25 AUG 2002.

Summary: Drive smart failed after 9 days of use (click, whirr...clunk - repeat). I lost all my data. I've got a new replacement, but I'm leery now. Logic tells me that it must be an isolated failure, but that doesn't seem to help.

Summary: I was initially excited about this hard drive as it had decent reviews here @ Cnet. I also had heard a lot about this line of hard drives being very unreliable and prone to failure, but thought that i would purchase it anyway and see for myself. The first two weeks it worked fine, now I'm on 3rd week and for some reason it started to make noise and crash. I lost two weeks of work. The second HD I have is a WD also and it is starting to make some noise.

Summary: Much quieter and faster than any other hard drives I have owned. I leave my computer on almost constantly and have never had any problems with this drive so far. The drive seems to be able to do more at once than my other drive with a 2MB buffer. The 8MB does make a definite performance increase especially when dealing with very large files.

Summary: Western Digital will not support your hard drive WHEN it fails. On November 16, 2004, I bought a 250GB hard drive. Three months later in February, 2005, I had to return it for a replacement due to a hard failure. Now, this replacement drive too has failed as well after only eight months.
I went through two Western Digital drives in a year due to no fault of my own and the hard drive failed just six days after the warranty expiration. I requested a replacement from Western Digital and they completely ignored me.
Buy at your own risk.
Pros:
None
Cons:
Lack of Support, Drives fail -
Best Quality and Value buy for any OS
Pros: Some readers with negative coments about a HDD not being ideal for a particular OS are absolute nonsense - A HDD is a HDD !!! It makes no difference what OS is loaded or how one partitions the drive - PLEASE DON'T COMMENT IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DO
Cons: None
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Western Digital Corp.
- Part number: WD1200JB
- Description: WD Caviar 120 GB Special Edition, the latest addition to Western Digital's reliable, award-winning hard drive family, is designed to maximize desktop computer performance for activities requiring high-performance hard drives such as computer gaming, digital video editing, and file server applications. The WD Caviar 120 GB Special Edition is equipped with an 8 MB buffer - the largest buffer available today in a 7200 RPM desktop EIDE hard drive, delivering data to users faster than any hard drive in its class. The Special Edition hard drive provides a higher percentage of cache hits than industry-standard 2 MB versions. Within the complex operations of hard drives, the buffer is used to hold the results of recent reads from the disk, and also to "pre-fetch" information that is likely to be requested in the near future. The use of an increased buffer improves the performance by reducing the number of physical accesses to the disk and allowing data to stream from the disk uninterrupted by mechanical operations.
